Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Puck Headlines: a glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• This image of Tampa Bay Lightning star Steven Stamkos(notes) was shot by Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller(notes) for a Hockey Fights Cancer awareness photo spread on VanityFair.com. It also includes a shot of Drew Doughty that made us do a Jose Theodore(notes) double-take. [NHL]

• Elliotte Friedman returns with his weekly column, getting Wade Redden's(notes) back as the veteran defenseman is banished to the AHL by the New York Rangers: "That's not right. It's blatantly unfair. If the Rangers fired Sather today, he could work for any other team tomorrow. There is no cap on team employees. Redden, who has basically been fired, does not have that luxury." [CBC Sports]

TSN has a full list of the waiver drops today. A few of the more interesting names: Ryan Hollweg(notes), Alex Picard, Chris Durno(notes), Brian Willsie(notes), Hugh Jessiman(notes) (sigh) and Robbie Earl(notes). [TSN]

Kari Lehtonen(notes)? Injured? Not our Kari Lehtonen. [Dallas Stars Blog]

• On Brayden Schenn's(notes) chances with the Los Angeles Kings this season, and the power of his magic knee brace. [LA Kings Insider]

• Is Jeff Finger(notes) going to get the Redden treatment? Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke says don't assume he's giving the Marlies the Finger yet. [QMI]

• After the Winter Classic, other NHL-centric ideas for HBO to follow on 24/7. A trade deadline show would be pretty damn cool, but is there any chance they'd get the access from anyone not named Brian Burke? [From The Rink]

• Really interesting stuff from occasional Puck Daddy contributor Bruce Peter on the KHL's crackdown on YouTube videos. If the plan is to distribute its own video, can the KHL ensure that the highlights that really pique the interest for fans around the world (i.e. brawls) will get uploaded? Because we seriously doubt they will be on an official channel. [Puck Worlds

• "Two games into the pre-season and it's clear there's no possible way for Carey Price(notes) to succeed in Montreal." As we asked on Twitter: What are the Eric Francises of the hockey world going to do if Price opens with a shutout or starts the season 7-1? We're pessimistic that he'll ever succeed in Montreal's pressure-cooker, too, but these declarations of doom after watching Price in fake games is premature. [Slam Sports]

• Contract talks are back on between the Buffalo Sabres and former first-round pick Zack Kassian(notes). Please recall things got weird when Kassian was accused of assault.  [WGR]

• "Harding's injury has forced the Wild to contemplate whether they have to go outside the organization for a suitable backup goalie, such as Jose Theodore or Vesa Toskala(notes)." Which one of these is not like the other, which one of these things doesn't belong ... [Star Tribune, via Hockey Wilderness]

• Future brain donor Noah Welch was among the Atlanta Thrashers' cuts. [Thrashers]

• The Blues cut seven guys you may not have heard of before. [Blues]

Mark Pysyk(notes) is among the players sent back to juniors by the Buffalo Sabres. [Sabres]

• Norwegian Hobbit Wizard Mats Zuccarello is also among the Rangers' cuts. [Rangers, and Scotty Hockey]

• The Pensblog found these images on some online retailer's site and wondered if these are the Winter Classic sweaters for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals. Chris From Icethetics offered this take: "There are so many reasons why these jerseys stand out as being counterfeit knock-offs; most notable is the lack of a Reebok label inside the back of the collar. Still, if there's a chance they could have the design right, I wouldn't want to keep it off the blog. But like I've said, plenty of other sources say this is NOT the jersey. Who do we believe? No one. We just wait for something official."

• Fantastic look at Life Without Streit for the New York Islanders. [Lighthouse Hockey]

• The Cheechoo train having been derailed, it appears noted offensive juggernaut Adam Burish(notes) will be the next player auditioned with Mike Ribeiro(notes) and Brenden Morrow(notes). [Defending Big D]

• Terrific piece by Tyler Dellow that argues both Taylor Hall(notes) and Magnus Pajaarvi shouldn't make the Oilers this year: "By delaying Hall and MPS for a year, the Oilers will be in a better position to be competitive during the third year of their contracts, creating a team that they want to be part of going forward." [mc79hockey]

• BREAKING: Nikolai Zherdev(notes) is an enigma. [Philly.com]

• Meet the pairs for Battle of the Blades 2, including Jamie Salé and Theo Fleury(notes). Who lifts whom? [CBC]

• Odds are in Brendan Morrison's(notes) favor to hook up with the Vancouver Canucks this season after his tryout. But seriously: Was he ever a "star," as the article labels him? That word gets tossed around too often. [Globe & Mail]

• Via Puck Buddy Wayne, here's Phil Mushnick: "Yikes! With their season starting Oct. 9, the Islanders still are without a radio station. Last season their TV feed was simulcast on two Long Island stations." [NY Post]

• Projecting the Boston Bruins lines this season, including Tyler Seguin(notes) opening in between Mark Recchi(notes) and Michael Ryder(notes). [Bruins Blog]

• Finally, one of the most oddly addictive videos we've ever found: A compilation of scoreboard graphics and music, focused on the Boston Bruins Chilliwack Bruins. From the noise-o-meter to commercials to play of the game. Check it out.
