Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Morning Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• Cap considerations and general concerns about fair value have evidently killed a potential trade of Michael Nylander from the Washington Capitals to the Chicago Blackhawks for power forward Dustin Byfuglien. Getting a second-line center and moving Patrick Sharp back to wing is pretty darn important; but here's the reality of the Blackhawks' surroundings from Third Man In: "Mike Comrie and Doug Weight on Long Island are probably available at the right price but Byfuglien and/or Cam Barker will be the going rate.  And they always will be in each and every case until we get closer to the trade deadline ..." [Third Man In]

• In order to remain on Long Island, the New York Islanders desperately need a new arena facility. Also important: Not sucking. [Newsday]

• The Toronto Maple Leafs could open negotiations with Brian Burke this week. By the way: Congrats to Al Strachan for calling the Melrose firing on Hockey Night in Canada's Hot Stove segment (about 4:40 in); that helps balance out the blatant Canadian elitism in questioning why the Leafs are seeking to hire a no-good, hockey-ignorant American in Brian Burke when there so many great Canadians looking for management jobs. C'mon, Al: We're not all like Mike Milbury. [Globe & Mail]

• With Marian Hossa, Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen (if healthy), the Detroit Red Wings have the potential for three 50-goal scorers this season. [Snapshots]

• Razor on the Dallas Stars snagging Darryl Sydor from the Pittsburgh Penguins: "The re-acquisition of Darryl Sydor is one of those transactions that should be viewed as win-win-win-win. It's a quad of positivity." [Razor With an Edge]

• Uh, wow: "German international netminder Robert Mueller, who revealed last week that his brain cancer is incurable, returned to the ice to make a substitute appearance for the Cologne Sharks on Sunday." How do you even take a shot on goal with that guy between the pipes? [Reuters]

• Larry Brooks believes the New Jersey Devils should be sellers, and that Patrik Elias should be moved this season. Which would be dandy if (A) the Devils didn't commit millions to Brian Rolston last off-season to help make them Stanley Cup contenders or (B) Marty Brodeur will return from injury before the postseason or (C) Elias isn't exactly Tickle Me Elmo as far as rampant desire for acquisition goes. [NY Post]

• After the "Boots" Del Biaggio loan mess, the NHL had adopted a new rule that forces "owners to disclose any and all business and financial relationships between one another." We assume this includes the informal "What's the next crazy thing Oren Koules does?" pool the other 29 teams participate in. [Kuklas]

Mike Comrie's girl Hilary Duff has signed a deal with NBC to develop a new series and to guest star on other NBC shows. Six words: Hilary Duff Dwight Schrute karaoke-off. [TV.com]

• So at what point does Joe Sakic's back situation for the Colorado Avalanche go from "problem" to "chronic?" [Avs Talk]

• Exactly how much would you pay for Pelle Lindbergh's tuxedo, the one he wore when he picked up the 1985 Vezina Trophy for the Philadelphia Flyers? Because someone in Sweden has it on eBay, and bidding seems to have hit the wall at $800 US. [eBay]

• With leadership and a competitive fire, John Tavares is trying to prove to critics that he still belongs on top of the board for next year's NHL Draft. Not so much talk about team throwing their seasons for this kid anymore, huh? [NHL]

• Losing Andy McDonald is basically a death-blow for the St. Louis Blues on several fronts. [Hockey Guy]

• Now that the San Jose Sharks' power play has come around, is there no denying that Todd McLellan is the coach of the year thus far in the NHL? For the sheer fact that Patrick Marleau is suddenly relevant again? [HLOG]

• Remember those bloggers that are working for Versus on its Web site? Well, a few of them participated in a conference call with Jonathan Toews of Chicago. While in their parents' basement, wearing nothing but underwear. We assume. [Sharkspage]

• Finally, this would appear to be former Boston Bruins goaltending draft pick Mike Brown, now playing for Schwenningen ERC in Germany and obviously auditioning via YouTube for a mascot position in the NHL. Please tell us beer was somehow involved. Ned Braden would approve, but alas Brown is fully clothed.

Someone in Sweden is also selling Sundin's ability to make decisions
I'm sure Avery would love to take a shot on goal with Mueller between the pipes... and have a little chat with him. A chat which includes words "cancer boy"

Damn if Rick DiPietro tried to dance like that he'd probably get 9 injuries, not that it would change anything for the Islanders, their best player was past his prime 3 years ago.

So at what point does Joe Sakic's career situation for the Colorado Avalanche go from "active" to "retired?"

Alas, this may be the end of the line for Super Joe...
Also, can I get in on the crazy Koules action? Or is that pool for owners only? Any by the way, isn't the phrase "drink the cool (koules)-aid" cultish for mass suicide? Just curious...

Does that count the 3 injuries he'd get by trying to lace up he first skate?

Many of us from the Centre of the Hockey Universe would wish Mad Mike would grab Al Strachan by the scruff of the neck and throw him out the front door of the CBC building on to Front St.
Strachan, hockey's biggest gossip-monger has had a running feud with Burke for several years now, particularly when Brian was unemployed and was a regular contributor to Hockey Night in Canada's Hot Stove Lounge.
Of all the print or electronic talking heads available, CBC has kept on Strachan and that sports radio talk show mouthbreather PJ Stock.

How about a hat tip to former Lake Superior State standout and Boston Bruin (okay more Providence Bruin & Detroit Viper) Clayton Beddoes who is Robert Mueller's head coach with Kolner Haie who put him in the game with the Sharks leading 5-1 on Friday and is trying to allow him to remain as backup as long as possible? Classy, Classy move!

Whenever I read a Larry Brooks article I always have this one nagging question. How does this guy still have a job???Trade Madden Gio and Elias.Elias maybe, okay Elias please but to trade our top PK forward and someone who brings more then goals is completely stupid.

    WHAT!?
Franzen scores 27 goals last year and now he's a potential 50-goal scorer, right up there with fraking Marian Hossa and Henrik Zetterberg?
    Thats, uhh, a lofty expectation...

a new "arena facility" would certainly help. I could definitely see it attracting more "fan persons", who might even feel inclined to buy a "souvenir novelty", and maybe even some "food stuffs" or a "cocktail beverage" while enjoying the "hockey sport" taking place on the "floor surface".

Q: How do you even take a shot on that guy??
A: Yeah, that would be tough. Though I do have a theory... You take your "stick implement" and aim the "puck device" between the "goal type posts", just so, and purposefully beyond the "German international netminder"
sorry Greg... just couldn't resist one more. 'German international netminder' may not be your words, but it was just too easy.

No one else commented, but why in the hell would you trade Nylander for Byfuglien? Was it entirely for Cap space? Good Lord.

If you have paid attention to the NHL this season and the end of last season, you would see how Franzen has gone on a terror scoring goals. Though it is early in the season, he's currently on pace to score 55 goals.
Being linemates with Zetterberg is very helpful.

We Town Of Hempstead residents will not allow our tax money to build a new arena for a team nobody supports. We are not Newark, desperate for something, anything, to be built here and attract visitors. Our local government is still trying to emerge from under 50 years of republican rule which brought us to the brink of bankruptcy. There is no money available to fix the roads, so there certainly isn't enough money to build a new sports arena. The funding for the county-run hospital is lacking, certainly there is no money for a new arena for a team nobody goes to see.
You'll like Kansas City, Islanders fans. You and the Royals, two major-league teams in a minor league city. Yee-haw!

Have Hilary Duff and Comrie sing a duet to be used as the Islander goal song, and she'll throw in a free arena. Problem solved, unless she wants a minimum amount of airtime.

Very sad news about Mueller. The undersized goaltender was a Caps draft pick who never made it but could put together some brilliant moments. Best wishes to him and his family ...
