Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• Two interesting articles from the Daily Herald today. First is a conversation with John McDonough, president of the Chicago Blackhawks, in which he dodges a Winter Classic question and gives himself a C+ on how well he knows the NHL. The second is a short piece on defenseman Brian Campbell and his introductory news conference, where he said expectations in the locker room are about winning "the whole prize" next season.

• JD is punk rock: The St. Louis Blues sign RFA Steve Bernier to an offer sheet after the Vancouver Canucks traded for him on July 4. Blues win this round of offer-sheet wars. [St. Louis Blues]

• Hey, turns out the Devils actually aren't going to sign Jason Smith this summer, as he inks a two-year deal with the Ottawa Senators. Sens Army has already given him a nickname: "Philchenkov." The explanation: "Not only because his salary falls between those of Anton Volchenkov ($2.5M per year) and Chris Phillips ($3.5M a year), but also because his playing style is a bit of a synthesis of the two." [Sens Army]

• Remember that gay hockey movie that had the NHL's blessing to use officially licensed logos from the Toronto Maple Leafs? Well, it's found a North American distributor. [SunHerald.com]

Stu Barnes creeps closer to retirement, and possible coaching gig with the Dallas Stars. Man, that guy could score a big goal, couldn't he? Clutch, without a doubt. [Dallas Stars Blog]

• Hey kids, it's the Derek Boogaard Debate Camp! [MYFO]

• Is Mats Sundin hanging out in Vancouver? And if he is, will he be joining Pavel Demitra with the Vancouver Canucks next season and beyond? [Waiting for Stanley]

• A desperate plea to get the Minnesota Wild to switch back to green for their home jerseys and avoid "that Detroit Red Wings" look. [Wild Puck Banter]

Patrick Thoresen decides not to return to the Philadelphia Flyers, and may need a geography lesson when it comes to the location of their AHL affiliate. Boy, right when you think someone has the stones to play in the NHL ... [CBC]

• Rudy Kelly makes a plea for the Los Angeles Kings to yank Mattias Norstrom out of retirement. "The Kings are Bridget Jones and Rob Blake is Daniel Cleaver; Matty Norstrom is our Mark Darcy." Wait, which one's Hugh Grant again? [Battle of California]

• Joe Nieuwiendyk has formally joined the Toronto Maple Leafs as a special assistant to the general manager, a.k.a. the Steve Yzerman role. Most difficult name to spell in hockey history? Perhaps. [Globe & Mail]

Sergei Fedorov is likely back with the Washington Capitals, to join their Russian attack. As opposed to their "Rush ‘N Attack," in which you killed enemy soldiers with what looked like a blue pickle. [FanHouse]

• Farewell to Chris Botta's awesome stint as a hockey blogger. And before he went, he dropped a ton of amazing information about the future of Ted Nolan with the New York Islanders. [NYI Point Blank]

• Finally, this is why EA Sports is so damn good: Screenshots of newly-acquired free agents like Marian Hossa, Erik Cole and Ryan Malone in their new uniforms for NHL 09. Eh, maybe it is for the best if they takeover 2K Sports. [Going Five Hole]

Aaaannnd you missed it. Nieuwendyk just has one "i". :D
I'm happy to hear he's working on his GM resume. I wanted him to come back to Dallas for practice, but he might still be mad at us.

Campbell must be thinking that since the 'Hawks were 5 wins and 3 losses vs. the Wings during the '07-'08 regular season that IF they meet up with the Wings during the post season they'll beat them. That logic doesn't always work.

LOL - EA Sports screen-shot with Hossa wearing the #18 Winged-wheel. There is no friggin way that Maltby is going to surrender that jersey number that he's worn for over 10 years. Hossa will have to switch the order of the numbers and wear 81 instead. Of course, he won't want to look in the mirror to see the 81 backward because his name will be backward too - assoH! - (Oops, couldn't resist)

So...Brian Campbell goes to a news conference, and says what everyone wants to hear. Duh...isn't that what these things are for. Meet the fans, media, and sing the company song. What's the alternative, the truth?
The truth is, Chicago IS getting better, much better. Being a Wings fan, this concerns me. I know Cup#12 is not going to agree with me, but we've had a lot of trouble with the "slackhawks" in the past, and I don't see that getting any better either. I'd hate to meet a "nothing to lose" team like Chicago in the first round. Seen that horror story before!!

If Chicago actually makes the playoffs this year I'll...I'll...I'll...well...if they do it I'll be surprised. Feel free to prove me wrong but I still don't smell "western conference power house" just yet.

I think Chicago has a better chance than Colorado,of making the playoffs. I've been wrong (often) before though.

Its got to be true, soup says so and his arrival should be nothing but a omen and a century old fulfilling prophecy "out of the west from the east and heading north he shall have sticks and skates in hand, he shall lead Chicago somewhere". Good luck with that one soup.

Wing Nut: Didn't the Hawks go 4-0 against the Wings to start the season series? Maybe he's thinking that if they can stay healthy and the Hawks and Wings go at it in the early rounds, they have a pretty good chance. But, like you said, it doesn't always work out that way.

"halucigents"????? Where do you people come from??? Stop blogging and go to school!!!! Maltby would give up 18 if Hossa really wanted it. That's how players on the wings opperate! That being said, Hossa wouldn't think of taking 18 from Malts... expect him to wear 81 next year....mmm.... that's the same amount of games that the Wings will win next year. 81-0-1!!!! Bring back the cup boys!!!! Go Wings

The only thing Campbell did in San Jose was to get everyone in the Adult Rec Leagues here doing the Spin-O-Rama. Chicago to the Stanley Cup? Not next season.
Thanks. Now we got a Spin-O-Rama Free Defence.

aquinas...sorry about the spelling mistake but I was too lazy to look it up. Further, I will be going back to school in a couple years to complete my doctorate...I'll probably be a little more cautious with my grammar and spelling when working on my thesis as compared to the effort I put into a sports blog, but thanks for pointing it out and for recommending the education anyway.
