Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Evening Puck Headlines and Previews: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• Just a reminder that we're still rocking and rolling here on Puck Daddy during the holiday, with Three Stars wrap-ups and Puck Headlines and a special Thanksgiving treat on Turkey Day. Happy holidays, everyone. Be safe, get fat, be happy. And as always, thanks for reading.

Preview: Chicago Blackhawks at San Jose Sharks (10:30 p.m. EST; TV: RIS, CSBA). Quite the love-fest going on here, despite this being Brian Campbell's first game back in San Jose after selling out to the Blackhawks. Soupy is happy for the Sharks, and thinks playing in Buffalo will be more difficult. Ryane Clowe knows the fans feel cheated, but "I guess we know the situation more as a player what some guys go through." Aw, group hug at center ice, you guys ...

Preview: Atlanta Thrashers at Washington Capitals (7 p.m. EST; TV: SS, CSN). Caps fans couldn't be happier to see Karl Alzner make it to the show. OK, they might be happier if half their team wasn't injured. Thrashers might go with either Ondrej Pavelec or Johan Hedberg tonight. Meanwhile, coach John Anderson recently recalled when he and Leafs coach Ron Wilson were hazed as teammates. "Instead of shaving our heads, they kind of cut pieces out of it, so we looked like the Sex Pistols ... They called me Johnny Rotten. They called him Sid Vicious. I said hello to Sid today." Awesome.

Preview: Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Islanders (7 p.m. EST; TV: FSPI, MSG). Answer: Marc-Andre Fleury, Rick DiPietro, Sean Leahy. Question: Who are three people who can load up on all the beer they want at Nassau tonight because they're watching instead of playing?

Preview: Boston Bruins at Buffalo Sabres (7 p.m. EST; TV: MSG, NESN). The last time these two teams met it was like an offensive skills competition in the first period. Ryan Miller will get a chance for redemption. Meanwhile, Maxim Afinogenov is turbo pissed about his benching for the last two games.

Preview: Philadelphia Flyers at Carolina Hurricanes (7 p.m. EST; TV: CN8, FSS). Jeff Carter is now tied with Thomas Vanek for the NHL lead in goals with 15. Those Flyers have some decent centers, don't they?

Preview: Phoenix Coyotes at Columbus Blue Jackets (7 p.m. EST; TV: FSAZ, FSOH). Hey, shocker: Ken Hitchcock said he starts eating turkey on Thursday and "is still munching on turkey sandwiches on Tuesday." Phoenix has lost six in a row.

Preview: New York Rangers at Tampa Bay Lightning (7 p.m. EST; TV: MSG2, SUN). Since they met in Prague to start the season, the Bolts and Rangers are finishing up their season series tonight. Mike Smith is in goal tonight for Tampa, and interim coach Rick Tocchet issues a stern warning to his players that he will "get rid of people" if the effort isn't there. Bet on it.

Making fun of referees is awesome:

Preview: New Jersey Devils at Florida Panthers (7:30 p.m. EST; TV: MSG2, FSFL). Slowly, Scott Clemmensen is winning the Devils' starting goaltending job; he'll make his fifth start in six games tonight. Now, if he can just perfect that whole "playing for three good periods" thing.

Preview: Montreal Canadiens at Detroit Red Wings (7:30 p.m. EST; TV: TSN, NHLN). The Habs no doubt wish they were coming into this game with different momentum. And by that we mean having a little more confidence that they can pull their goalie on a delayed penalty without squandering a one-goal lead. Meanwhile, Darren Helm and Darren McCarty flip-flop for the Wings.

Preview: Dallas Stars at Minnesota Wild (8 p.m. EST; TV: FSSW, KSTC). Mark Parrish makes his return to Minnesota after the Wild bought out his contract. This can only be a good thing for fantasy owners who might have him on the roster.

Preview: St. Louis Blues at Colorado Avalanche (9 p.m. EST; TV: FSMW, ALT2 , Yahoo! Sports). Tony Granato is becoming a punching bag for frustrated Avs fans. "Avalanche fans have had to endure what may be the most boring Avalanche team since, well, ever." Ouch.

Preview: Los Angeles Kings at Edmonton Oilers (10 p.m. EST; TV: TSN, NHLN). There's really nothing more annoying than when a team takes all the air out of a good storyline. With that. Mathieu Garon will not start against his old team, as the Oilers will go with Dwayne Roloson. At least we'll have the Lubomir Visnovsky/Matt Greene/Jarret Stoll drama.

• Finally, Sarah Spain with an interesting look at how some of the Blackhawks ended up choosing their sweater numbers:

I predict Campbell won't be getting a whole lotta love in the Shark Tank tonight. I figure he'll be hearing the boo birds as much as Selanne does and we may even break into a Campbell or Soupy or Brian chant to rival what Elbows Pronger gets on his trips to the Tank. I know I'm going to give him hell.
Sell out is right. But who needs him when you've got Boyle, Blake, Lukowich and a revitalized Erhoff? Good riddance. Maybe Murray will pummel him with a smashing check at some point. That would be sweet.

Well, ideally, the Sharks would have only given up one set of assets for Campbell/Boyle, and would still have Wyshart and one of the picks (or even Bernier; I think he may have done a lot better under McLellan than he would ever have been under Ronald the Duck) but things seem to have worked out pretty well.

BTW Wysh, that story you linked about Campbell is old. It's a "preview" of the game a week or so ago when the Sharks went into Chicago.

Okay, LOVE the eye-chart. Totally stealing that for games where there is bad officiating (every other one). Also, as we know from this clip, Campbell loves hugs:

FYI WYSH that is "THE Signman". He is a venerable fixture and has a backpack he drapes over the back of the seat infront of him. Each sign folds up and has a little tab. For a Flyers fan he is supernice(and wears the worst sweaters). Used to sit behind him in row 3 sec N but decided to move up a bit higher b/c he and the goal judge got in the way. You should do a piece on him like you did with dancing Shawny. Speaking of doing features how about bring back Mirtle VS Wyshynski or a feature in the "evening headlines" that has possible fight card match ups(but do it better than Roming).
Have a good holiday. Don't enjoy Gluttony day too much, you are starting to look a little round in the face. FYI they are doing construction N. of exit 5 on the NJTP.

I wonder if that's the official eye chart of the officials.
Campbell is getting paid to lose. His loss. We got more talent for cehaper with Boyle, adn with Lukowich and Blake we got all fo the skill with tons of expreience. Bye bye Campbell. have fun golfing in June. We'll be thinking about you from the rink of the Conference finals.

If i never heard the words "Tony Granato", "Tyler Arnason", "Avs blueline", or "power play" ever again, as long as i lived, it would still be too soon.
Please, please, please blow it up and start fresh. Please. PLEEEEEEEEASE. I'll gladly swallow two years of terrible, wretched, dreck hockey if it means a meaningful rebuild and exciting, fresh prospects. Ryan Smyth's age could be calculated in dog-years, Hejduk skates like creepy Mr. Herbert walks, the defense sucks, the goaltending is inconsistent, we can't score the first goddam goal of the game to save our lives, and most of the young talented players (Wolski, i'm looking at you in particular) seem to have "on-off" switches on their back. Enough!
Not to be critical, of course.

Many of us felt betrayed when Campbell took the money and ran, but I think we ended up doing better with Boyle, Lukowich and Blake. Post #4 is right, it would be nice to have only given up one set of assests, but sometimes what you need is worth almost any price. And if they get to the Finals, it will have been worth the cost!
    Go Sharks!

Hey Wysh, you may want to have your blog software checked. The main page for your blog indicates there's 19 comments, but I only count 14 right now. Additionally, I've noticed when there's multiple pages of comments, the last 3 or 4 comments on each page aren't shown.

I'm looking for Les Habs to come out with a statement tonight. They have always gotten up for big games, and even if they don't win, I expect this game to be a momentum turner. If they can hang with the Wings and play with passion and fire, they can build on that. They've been gripping the sticks too tight - just let if fly like you did last year, boys! Shoot the puck, and anything can happen.

Hey I've got a Karl Alzner signed rookie card thingy that I scooped up during my most recent every-couple-years nostalgic desire to open packs of baseball and hockey cards. May this be the start of a HOF career.

Habs wont amount to anything without a more dominant big center and power foward. With the West so loaded, and Pittsburgh with Crosby, Malkin and Staal down the middle, Montreal wont see the finals for years to come.
