Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Morning Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• See what you've done now, Montreal Canadiens fans? Your scurrilous robo-voting and ballot-stuffing has forced Pittsburgh Penguins blog The Penguins Experience to call for an NHL All-Star Game boycott. "The automatic voting has stopped since the installation of a captcha and a one-vote-per-minute voting rule, but all this has done is make the Canadiens' players' leads insurmountable. It is irresponsible, and just plain bad business, that the NHL set up an online vote without installing any sort of features that would prevent automated voting." [Penguins Experience]

Philadelphia Flyers prospect James vanRiemsdyk will wake up this morning and discover that he's (allegedly) featured on Deadspin, shirtless and with a penis drawn on his face. And he will remember that he is, in fact, from Jersey. [Deadspin, and thanks to Puck Daddy reader Sunny for the tip.] (Ed. Note: We've had a few people saying this isn't vanRiemsdyk but a friend of his. So grain-of-salt, and remember it was featured on Deadspin's "stuff we didn't use" post.)

• A couple of shameless plugs. You can hear my appearance with Bob McCown on Prime Time Sports last night, regarding the NHL vs. NBA popularity debate, over on the FAN 590 homepage. Thanks to everyone who heard it and who shared some kind words about my typically over-verbose performance. Meanwhile, Millian from Blueline Radio had me on to chat about everything from the shootout to the general workings of this blog. Check out the mp3 here. Thanks to both shows for a good time.

San Jose Sharks GM Doug Wilson wants everyone to know that Claude Lemieux has been signed to an AHL, rather than NHL, tryout contract. [Snapshots]

• Patrick Roy claims his minor league team's management has asked him not to speak publically about his sons being unrelenting hockey thugs. [Canadian Press]

• Happy Thanksgiving, Nashville Predators fans: "It's a complicated and torturous route to navigate, but there exists a legal road map that could lead billionaire Canadian businessman Jim Balsillie into the ownership suite of the Nashville Predators." [Globe & Mail]

• How the NHL can learn from the current NHL vs. NBA debate. [Jibblescribbits]

• Good news for the Flyers: Defensemen Randy Jones and Ryan Parent are on their way back, and on track for a December return. [Philly.com]

• Speaking of Philly, Flyers chairman Ed Snider deserves some major love from puckheads this week. "Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation would take over operation and programming at three rinks that officials said were targeted for possible closing amid the city's budget troubles." Awesome. [Philly.com]

• The Washington Capitals have been pummeled by injuries lately, and the hits keep on coming: Both defenseman Jeff Schultz broken finger) and forward Chris Clark (stress fracture in his right forearm) have been placed on long-term injured reserve. Mike Green, Boyd Gordon, Sergei Fedorov, Alexander Semin and John Erskine are all injured, too. So the Caps have called up defensemen Karl Alzner and Sami Lepisto and forwards Chris Bourque and Graham Mink from the Hershey Bears. Which gives us a great opportunity to remind everyone that Alzner carries around a fake mustache, once owned by Snoop Dogg, as a good-luck charm. And to re-run one of these wacky NHL Draft photos where it looks like the kid has a few grand's-worth of blow in front of him. [Capitals Insider]

Ben Eager has replaced Dustin Byfuglien in the Chicago Blackhawks' lineup, and his line with Andrew Ladd and Dave Bolland hasn't skipped a beat. Which, one assumes, just makes Big Buf all the more expendable. [Sun Times]

• The Toronto Maple Leafs are bracing for the wholesale changes one assumes Brian Burke will make when he finally takes over the franchise. [Globe & Mail]

• Congrats to our good friends Japers' Rink and St. Louis Game Time as they join SB Nation.

• Finally, and via UniWatch, here's a rather cool video about the creation of a hand-painted bubble hockey game featuring the 1974 Broad Street Bullies against Philadelphia Flyers alumni, as well as some other bubble hockey highlights. The time-lapse photography that shows a Team USA player morphing into a New York Rangers bubble boy is both amazing and a little blasphemous.

That statement may be ok for the mayor of D.C., but it has no place in hockey.

I live in Montreal, I'd like to see some other players hit the ice. Ones who actually deserve it, other than Markov and Kovalev that is.

I gotta agree with this. I dont like cheats. I dont want to see an All Star fake team. Its a hockey disgrace. They should void the vote and make it a player selection this year till they figure out a way to fix it. Who would think Canadiens would do this?
    Habs fans....................you really stink!

At this point, the automatic voting thing is funny. The history books will show the 2009 Eastern Conference All Stars with an asterisk beside their names. Canadiens fans you are a joke. This is essentially "Vote for Rory" x 6. Way to go Habs fans.
This just looks real bad for the league.

vanRiemsdyk was just trying to draw attention away from his unfortunate last name, but this probably wont help.

Why anyone really cares about the all star game to begin with is beyond me. Remember, it is an EXHIBITION. If this joke of a league likes receiving the media attention of a bogus voting system's resulting exhibition game, so be it. If this joke of a league likes being shown to be the joke that it is, so be it.
Anyone who cares about the NHL All-Star Game......... you stink worse than a BubbaBanjo one-joke comment.

    @ jibblescribbits --
I'm not sure if the penis or the near-moobs are the biggest issue for Riemer.

Why blame Habs fans for the NHL's stupid system? Is it the fault of Habs fans that the NHL was too stupid to implement measures to stop automatic voting? Is it the fault of Habs fans that the NHL lets people vote as many times as they want? Is it the fault of Habs fans that the NHL lets fans vote for all the players from a certain team by simply texting the team name? Seriously, the fault lies totally with the NHL on this one.

Greg, that's not van Riemsdyk. It's a friend of his. However, his autograph (on the left shoulder) is on the guy in the picture.

I hate the vote in system. Like I have said previously it's just a popularity contest. Maybe if we had all of the Habs players come out in elegant evening gowns and tiaras it might feel a little bit more legitimate.
I'm pretty sure they'd look better in the gowns than they do on the ice. Losing to NYI? That takes some effort.

The all "star" game has become a pitiful parody of itself. You might as well put the players in display boxes. The game is anticlimactic and pretty darn boring. Boycott what? It's like swearing off cottoncandy at age 52. It's meaninglessness squared. Take the whole thing and put it under complete review and overhaul. Do us a favor, decide what to do based on what honors the sport itself. The rest will take care of itself. Oh, and by the way that sucking sound you here coming from Montreal is their team and fans. Har dee har.

Ed Snider has done a lot for the Flyers and for the city in general. I used to teach a number of students in Kensington / Fairhill who were part of his youth hockey organization. It kept them focused and out of trouble. (Just so non-Philadelphians know, Fairhill is basically the most dangerous part of the city. They call it "The Badlands" for a good reason.) I'm glad that Snider is doing this because it really helps.
I respect the Canadiens for their history, but I hate the arrogance and sense of entitlement that surround them. It's the same reason I hate the Yankees - since these franchises won a lot of championships in their histories, they feel that they are owed respect, greatness, etc. They are finding out the hard way that this is not happening. See what happens Guy? See what happens Guy? Do you see what happens when you fine a forward on the ice?

Why blame Habs fans for being jerk offs? Is it the NHL's fault that Habs fans are too stupid to vote for deserving players? Is it the NHL's fault cheaters used automatic voting to guarantee that bums make the starting line up? Is it the NHL's fault that Habs fans are incapable of realizing that players on other team's might be far more deserving? Obviously, the fault lies totally with NHL on everything bad that has ever happened, ever.

    Re: rooneyx8
That is one of the most ignorant comments I have ever read. For one thing, if the Habs dropped two points, they would not be out of the top 8. They would be tied with 3 other teams for 5th. Second, they didn't boo Patrick Roy's son just for the heck of it. Last year he skated down to the opposing goalie and just started beating the crap out of a guy who wasn't even trying to fight back. Finally, what rock do you live under that you think Quebec forces people to speak one langauge? I've been there, and pretty much everyone was bilingual.

Whats more pathetic is a storied franchise as the Canadiens have to resort to finding loop holes to get their players in the all star game.
