Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• Solid look at Rod Brind'Amour as he works back from a serious knee injury for the Carolina Hurricanes and battles Father Time. "Your grace period is zero when you get to be older. All of a sudden, they start looking at you that you're older rather than being in a slump or whatever it is. I'm fully aware of what's going on, but I also feel as good as I ever have. That won't be an issue." [News & Observer]

Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland admits that his team has some tough personnel decisions heading into camp and because of the cap. [Snapshots]

• Scott Burnside has a fine magazine-style piece about Darren McCarty's day with the Stanley Cup. Second to last line: "Then, as if on cue, a piece of cauliflower sails through the air, glancing off Cheryl's leg." Who's not reading that story? [ESPN]

• Skip the next two if you're sick of the Sarah Palin news. First, Sen. John McCain meets high-school hockey baby daddy. [TNR]

• Next is a "Futurepedia" piece that ran on CBS Sportsline's humor site about the post-Palin future of hockey moms until 2032. We grinned a few times until the author repurposed a Polish joke so old that he needed to blow off the cobwebs. And then it finished about as well as Riley Cote in the shootout. [Sportsline]

• Owner Charles Wang's former business partner with the New York Islanders tried to drag him into some white collar crime mess, but Wang isn't expected to face any charges. The sheer number of times the name Kumar appears in this story has made us crave a slider something wicked. [FanHouse]

• Should the NHL go dark on the night Glenn Anderson is inducted into the Hall of Fame. Uh ... no. [The Two-Line Pass]

• Former New York Rangers goalie John Davison apparently inspired Foreigner's "Double Vision." Thank god it wasn't "Waiting for a Girl Like You." [Kukla]

Florida Panthers GM Jacques Martin was spotted at a Florida Marlins game. And not because no one else was there. [On Frozen Pond]

Chris Chelios will play another season in Detroit. We can just cut and paste this item for the next 25 years, can't we? [TSN]

• Previewing the Pacific Division with coming attractions movie posters. [Stanley Cup of Chowder]

Stephane Yelle signs with the Boston Bruins. The Bruins now have more former
Flames than Warren Beatty (/rimshot). [Five Hole Fanatics]

• An enormous number of NHL stars take Manhattan for some press stuff, as Henrik Lundqvist, Martin Brodeur and Vincent Lecavalier hit the premiere of HBO's amusing sitcom "Entourage." And yet no Sean Avery sighting, so he and Marty can hug it out ...

As you can see, King Henrik also met up with the lovely Carrie Milbank in a battle of the sexy. [NHL]

• Speaking of which: Mrs. Mike Modano is one again half-naked. Score. (NSFW) [Hollywood Tuna]

• The KB introduces their readers to new Vancouver Canuck Lawrence Nycholat. "Nycholat is known as a puck-moving defenceman who should see plenty of time if Kevin Bieksa, Alex Edler, Lukas Krajicek, Willie Mitchell, Mattias Ohlund, Sami Salo, Rob Davison, Nathan McIver or (more irony!) Nolan Baumgartner get hurt." [Orland Kurtenblog]

• Finally, please just go to The Pensblog to find out about Mario Lemule. Because ... words fail us.

As much as we've come to appreciate Cheli, it'd be big of him to step down, given what we're going to have to trade away - guys like Meech can do some double duty in McCarty territory as well. it's clear Cheli is gonna be a back-office leader somewhere, and i would take him over Bettman any day to lead things.
This is when tradition hurts. not to mention, after typical post mid-season injuries, they'll need that defensive depth they'll have to trade away.

big of him to step down? how about big of mccarty to step down? chelios still has plenty to contribute and is invaluable come playoff time...... even if he doesn't play. he's great at helping coach the younger guys and still has plenty of nasty in him....... that stuff we used to hate when he played against us. sure he won't play in all the games, but who would you rather have? a depth guy with his experience come playoff time or meech?

Henrik can slam his ham with anyone he wants, as long as he realizes that he is the best goaltender in the NY-Tri-state area and continues to play like it. The way he outplays Martin "Fatso" Brodeur every season is just gravy.

Keep taking those steroids, Rod. Anything to keep a almost 40 year old man's body looking like that, right?

Ed: Cheli is so valuable come the playoffs that the Wings dressed him for 14 of their 22 playoff games (0 in the finals) during which he recorded 0 points.
Cup#12: Cheli signing for 850K? LOLWUT?! That would mean the Wings need to cut over $1 Million in salary to fit that contract and some limited cap space in rather than the 300k they are looking at cutting now.

hyphen - my point is that there is more to what Chelios contributes than just on the ice during a game. When it comes to conditioning, the guy is a monster. There's a reason he's still able to play. As for the point total? If a team needs scoring from the #5 thru 8 defensmen on the roster, they don't belong in the playoffs anyway.

I can't stand the Red Wings, but Cheli deserves all the respect he gets. Everyone posting that he contributes even when off the ice, you are 100% correct. re: Sundin - retire already will you? They need you back at Castle Greyskull. Toronto needs the locker space for their #1 draft pick in '09-'10 anyway.
