Puck Daddy - NHL

The NHL kicked off its Las Vegas experiment without a bang, without the star attractions you come to find in Sin City and celebrated its awards show like it has done in the past: in bland fashion.

Then again, it was an awards show we're talking about and to expect Siegfried and Roy to balance one of their tigers on Alex Ovechkin's shoulders might be asking a bit much.

The move to Las Vegas left Ron MacLean behind and the show went unmanned. Well, unless you want to count the numerous times we saw San Jose Sharks forward Jeremy Roenick(notes) and pop singer Michael Buble grab some screen time.

In the end, just about every award was handed out to the expected winner, except for the Norris Trophy where Zdeno Chara(notes) (deservedly) won the honors after many had expected Washington's Mike Green(notes) to take home the award.

More thoughts on the 2009 NHL Awards after the jump.

-I'm a sucker for video montages and the opener with Dennis Leary was well done.

-Chaka Khan and Robin Thicke kicked off the show both wearing black. Did they receive fashion advice from NHL uniform designers? And what was with Chaka's dress? Did she raid MC Hammer's leftover parachute pants collection? If you want NHL Awards fashion talk, check out Curl's review.

-Throughout the night, except on a few occasions, the crowd seemed very subdued. Did they know they were in Las Vegas? Was it not open bar at the Palms? Did Don Cherry give them a pre-show talk about showing emotion?

-Funny how Jeremy Roenick stuttered over his congratulations for the Pittsburgh Penguins. I think he still might be hurting still from 1992.

-Here's a tip for the NHL for next year's show: If Patrick Kane(notes) is a nominee or going to be a presenter, please buy tickets for his sisters. Also, a tip of the cap to Versus for its  numerous camera shots of the girlfriend of Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender and Calder Trophy winner Steve Mason(notes) during his acceptance speech.

-Great to see Vladimir Konstantinov on the stage helping announce Ovechkin as the Pearson winner. If you haven't seen the ESPN piece on Vladdy, do check it out.

-Mike Green sporting the spare tire bow tie was a nice fashion touch. I didn't notice it spinning in bemusement when Zdeno Chara was announced as the Norris Trophy winner, though.

-The NHL had a nice montage of the goals of the season during the show. Why can't this be a fan voted category? Instead, fans get to vote on the "ScotiaBank Fan Fav Award" or, if you're Jeremy Roenick, the "Fan Five Award"

-What was with the large red spot lights shining behind those in the sections closest to the stage? It was like the Kenny Rogers Chicken episode from "Seinfeld."

-So either the Professional Hockey Writers Association knew while they were voting that Richard Zednik(notes) was going to leave for the KHL and wanted to hold it against him or they think: seriously bad back > almost dying on ice. No knock on Steve Sullivan(notes) at all. Great story. He and the Boston Bruins duo of Zdeno Chara and Tim Thomas(notes) were the inspiring figures tonight. Just sayin'.

-What's up with Ben Roethlisberger's wannabe FANarchy video out of nowhere?

-"Want me to thank your wife Manny?" -Tim Thomas with the line of the night while accepting the William M. Jennings Trophy with Manny Fernandez(notes). Timmy also had the speech of the night when he took the Vezina Trophy honors.

-Pavel Datysuk unfortunately wasn't as funny as he was a year ago in either of his two speeches while accepting the Selke and Lady Byng trophies. I think someone needed to surprise him with a cell phone call.

-Who's Gerry Dee?

-"I thought I was down the block at the Russian awards" - Glen Anderson. With all the awards Andy has been giving out recently, he must have forgot that Wyshynski is Ukrainian.

-Stick tap to Kevin Smith and the League for their vignette playing off of Silent Bob's "controversial" blogging at the beginning of the playoffs for NHL.com.

-Evgeni Malkin(notes) and Alex Ovechkin on the same stage accepting the Art Ross and Rocket Richard trophies showed their "peace accord" in Montreal during All-Star weekend wasn't a farce. The world should be very, very afraid when the Olympic hockey tournament begins next February in Vancouver.

-I enjoyed the polite applause as commissioner Gary Bettman was announced before he presented Jean Beliveau with the "NHL Lifetime Achievement Award." Of course, there were snipers ready in the balcony should he be booed at his own awards show.

-My reaction to Montreal Canadiens great Jean Beliveau saying the Pittsburgh Penguins "deserved" the Stanley Cup? Welcome to Penguins Nation, sir.

-For a moment, I thought Michael Buble was going to break out a Bill Murray rendition of "Star Wars" to end the show, but alas, it wasn't to be.

The first of three (at least) NHL Awards shows are in the books for Las Vegas. What did you think about the winners and the show itself?

To be truthful...reputation plays too much of a role in these awards. Sorry but Datsyuk beating Mike Richards out by a very slim margin (3 votes) just leaves a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth.
And Parise had similar stats to Datsyuk.....the votes should have at least been closer.
    C'est la vie.

Hey where was Sid tonight? Mario must have grounded him, or in hospital from hit from Franzen! Congrats to Ovechkin! NHL say's Crosby is the ambassador of hockey?.....yeah right! no charisma no personality and no two way play! Ovechkin is the true face of hockey! Nobody cares about Sid. It's all about Alex, so much more exciting to watch then Sid the Kid. Sid ain't done squat. Sid is the flavor of the week that the NHL promotes, but the truth is nobody likes the taste!

with the star power of Gerry Dee and Chaka Khan the NHL made it clear they have spent all their money bailing out the Coyotes.

There's too much predictability to the awards, we all knew for weeks before this who was taking home 90% of the awards with the only real suspense being the Norris. Not sure how you really can solve that, but it takes away from the show when nobody's really on edge waiting to hear the winners.

    A few thoughts:
    1. Awards are too predictable. They should do these before the playoffs and every member of the meda makes their guesses. By the end of the playoffs, so many of the voters have spoken that trends become too apparent.
    2. @#2 - Sid's done nothing. Except win the Cup.
    3. Link to Thomas' speeches please?
    4. Hockey players get wicked hot chicks. Beats any other major pro sport, except for Tony Parker, that lucky Frenchie. However, I'm guessing the woman next to Geno is Alyonka Larionov, and she could give Eva a run for her money.

GOON--"Sid ain't done squat." how many Stanley Cup rings does Alex have again?
And you wanna trash talk Sid for not being a two player? Are you kidding? Ovechkin doesn't even know there are two ends to a rink. And if you really expect Crosby to have a personality you have been under a rock. The kid has been groomed to please the media since he was thirteen. He wasn't exactly allowed to develop a "personality".

The caption of that Ovechkin picture should read "Thanks to my selfish play, look at what I was able to get...all these meaningless trophies. If I were able to get my teammates involved maybe we wouldn't have lost so badly in game 7 to the Pens (just like the Wings!) Thanks to my entire Caps team for always looking for me so I can get my 15 shots a game while I create for no one else!!!" Good enough caption????

GOON, all you guys who constantly talk about Sid only prove his relevance. You never hear Pens fans constantly beating down one player over and over. We simply bash on a player by player basis. You guys need to get over Crosby. He's been a scoring leader, an MVP, and a Stanley Cup Champion. Say what you want about the finals. Where was Zetterberg??? What happened to Ovechkin at home in Game 7???? Great players can't be the star every game. Hossa, Zetterberg, Ovechkin, Datsyuk have all proved this fact. Crosby is great!!!! Get over it!!!

Crosby will always be the face of the NHL as long as he plays win lose or otherwise. Ovechkin had his 5 mins of fame again tonight but burned into everyone's mind is that image of Sid raising the cup. Sorry Wings fans, you like Ovechkin so much tell ol' Kenny to sign him. He's pretty much a Hossa that can score in the playoffs (except only one goal in game 7s) Man this is a great summer. Ahhhhhhh.

All the negativity on Sidney Crosby!!!! LOL...Can't say I am a fan of his for sure but to say Ovechkin is better is a pretty big toss up. Both players are good don't get me wrong and both players have their own style of hockey they play. Crosby is a leader in every sense of the word, and can play hockey. Nobody can take that from him no matter what is said about him!! He is a 22 year old living out a dream that alot of 35 year old hockey players are still wishing they had the opportunity to have in their life. Like I said I am not a Crosby fan but I am also not blind and can see a good hockey player when I see it. Ovechkin can also play hockey, he just lacks in the leadership and is all about himself when it comes to the game. You can't take it from him either. If the team is fine with him doing it all himself then so be it but the difference between Ovechkin and Crosby is that Crosby would be more then welcome on 99% of other NHL teams playing today, where Ovechkin I give a select few that would put up with his selfishness and then there would be turmoil. Like I said though you can't take anything from either one of these players. All depends on what you are looking for in the player!

GOON I think you are right about one thing. They dont want a european as specially one that might bounce to the KHL or Euro league being the face. Sort of makes sense. A North American if they are good will always be the marketing guy as specially for Canada. C.ant have some guy that might jump on them
Lidstom is the best D guy out there no argument. But that doesnt entitle him to the cup. He has to win it.
Sidney really is gettin to you though. Dont get too nuts it looks like he didnt get any hardware. It was all the guys you mentioned.

Not sure what all the discussion is. All of these guys are the elite players. They all play hard. The best ones won trophies. Others came close. Sidney isnt a phoney I think. He isnt a one year wonder. But he didnt win any awards because these other guys were better this year.
