Puck Daddy - NHL

I had the opportunity to chat with Paul Kelly, executive director of the National Hockey League Players Association, near the Pittsburgh Penguins locker room after Game 6.

The following interview, which will also run in Russia inside Sovetsky Sport, covers a lot of ground; including Michael Nylander's(notes) contract status with the Washington Capitals and flirtation with the KHL; how the NHLPA feels about having Russian stars leading the League but the NHL not have a strong relationship with Russian hockey; a brief word about the Coyotes' situation; and his thoughts ahead of Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final.

First up, we discuss would could be a tense summer for the NHL and the KHL:

Q. Viktor Kozlov(notes) signed in Russia earlier this week. There is also talk in Russia that Avangard Omsk is trying to get Michael Nylander over to the KHL. This brings the following question: in the absence of the transfer agreement between the NHL and the Russians, how can a player, like Nylander, with an NHL contract go and play it Russia?

KELLY: Technically, he can't. Unless the Capitals take certain steps to end his contract by buying him out or something like that. And this is one of the issues we have had with the KHL. We should be respecting each other's contracts. The NHL shouldn't be signing any players under contract in Russia, and vice versa, they shouldn't be signing guys who have NHL obligations. We will watch that very carefully, but they should not permit players, who have contractual obligations elsewhere, to sign.

Even if the Capitals, for example, don't mind him signing in the KHL?

Again, if it gets cleared by the club and the league approves then it is a different story. I am not aware that that's happened with respect to Michael Nylander.

All the best players will still play here as long as Ovechkins, Malkins and Datsyuks are here. But still, what do you think needs to be done to normalize the relationships with the Russians?  It can only do good for the game to have a normal working relationship.

We want hockey to be strong everywhere. Including, we think it's good for hockey to have a strong KHL. You know, it'd be nice to have some kind of transfer agreement that would make sense. Thus far, we've not had much success reaching common ground with the Russians on the transfer agreement. I think you're right that as long as we have people like Ovechkin, Malkin, Kovalchuk and others, young Russians will want to play in the NHL because still it is the finest hockey in the world. It is going to take many years before the KHL will come up to this level. Hopefully, they will someday. But I think we just need to continue to communicate with each other. We need to talk more, we need to meet face to face more often; we need to communicate. If we continue to do that, we will work through some of these problems.

You make it sound like the communication is ongoing. But I think it stopped a long time ago.

I was in Switzerland for the World Championships, and I many occasions to talk directly with Alexander Medvedev [head of the KHL]. We had lunch together on one occasion. I think there hasn't been a great deal of communication thus far directly between the NHL management and the KHL management. And part of it is the friction over the Radulov contract. But I think it needs to change and it needs to improve.

For Russian fans, their national team and the Olympics is the big deal. What are the chances that the agreement will be reached by the Sochi Olympics in 2014 to allow NHL players to participate?

It's a jump fall at this point. I'd say the players strongly favor participating in the Sochi Olympics. The League has its reservations. That's the question that needs to be worked out between the NHL and the NHLPA. We are continuing to talk about it, and hopefully we will be able to work it out.

You represent the players. And earlier this year in a survey 82% of players said they want to participate.

It's true. Players overwhelmingly want to participate. But it is one of those issues that is collectively bargained. So, we have to reach some agreement with the league in order for that to happen.

I am sure you follow the Phoenix Coyotes court proceedings. Could you give us any thoughts on that from the NHLPA standpoint?

No, at this point I'd wait and see what the court decides. I wasn't in court, and I didn't really listen to the proceedings. So, I am really not in the position to say very much.

We also talked a bit about the Stanley Cup Final:

Q. What do you think about the finals so far?

KELLY: Oh, it's been terrific. Great hockey, seven games. It's terrific for the sport. I am very happy.

Did you think it would go seven before the start of the series?

I think I expected it to go either six or seven games. These are two very good teams who know each other pretty well. It is very good for hockey in North America.

What do you think could possibly break this 6-0 record by home teams?

That's a good question. I don't really know. Obviously, good goaltending, for starters; a team getting a couple of early breaks. The other day Pittsburgh, playing a game in Detroit, played very, very well for the first five or ten minutes or so, and they weren't able to capitalize on any of their opportunities, which was unfortunate. Had they scored a goal or two, they probably would have been right there. But once they were down by a couple of goals, it was very, very tough. But I expect a very close game Friday night.

Who is your MVP?

If Pittsburgh wins, at this point I'd have to say Malkin. And if Detroit comes out on top, it's a good question. Probably, Osgood.

please go to the KHL, Nyles! Jagr is there waiting with open arms! Maybe the Caps can get a 2nd line center who won't skate in circles all day long...

Caps need Cap space and Nylander leaving would help them big time, maybe Hosa will be looking for a Cup bound team again next year. Maybe the KHL can take Theadore (three or more) with Nylander, then the Caps would be able to bring in 3-4 good players.

hmmm.....more conn smythe evidence to the contrary as far as greg is concerned. if the wings win and they gave it to a guy who has is a plus 2 with 35 pts then that's an absolute insult. it'd be nothing but posturing for next year: "we wanted the pens to win so bad but unfortunately the wings won again. as a result we gave geno the conn smythe so, really, they BOTH are winners our our eyes."

Franzen, you're a dork. You really think that 35 pts in the playoffs is an absolute insult? Put down that crackpipe. I wonder how many people questioned Sakic or Gretzky b/c of some dumb stat like +/-. Granted you're a Detroit fan and you take that stuff a bit too seriously, but I don't think it has ANY bearing on a players true value to his team. You'd like to think that he has HURT the Pens w/ his 35 pts. Don't look now, but Hossa is a plus 6 and I'd say he has done little to help Detroit in the finals.

Next time read the whole sentence before you speak. It says that he would give it to Malkin if the Penguins win, and Osgood if the Wings win! No where does it say they would give it to Malkin if the Wings win!
Stop trying to create a controversy out of something that is not there.

all little Franzen wants to do is cry and moan about things that don't matter.
Question: am i talking about the guy in here, or the real Franzen on the ice?
    Answer: both.
if they gave the conn smythe to someone that was +35 with 2 points, THAT is an insult. +/- is arbitrary, because you're freeloading off other people's performance if you're not scoring.

-miah - whoa tiger! not that i really care about what you have to say but i'm saying that if they gave it to malkin while the pens LOST it'd be an insult.
-fetus - know what truly doesn't matter? a guy who scores a lot on the power play but doesn't play defense. if he got the trophy after losing that'd be even more pathetic than your team. we don't even NEED our hart nominee to beat you!

Jagr is coming back to the NHL probably. And Franzen, how come you continually gripe about the Conn Smyth? Osgood is the only candidate who stood out on the Wings (not such a bad thing, a winning team effort) and Malkin has edged Crosby in importance for his team. You are dumb to act like +/- is the main thing, Malkin and Crosby double shift constantly and are always out on the ice. Thier power play tallies don't count towards +/-. Miah is right with his assesment.
The Red Wings have two chances to win the cup and totally blew it once. Their fans have to be pissed that they didn't beat the Penguins last game in Pittsburgh. Talk as cocky as you want, but going to a game 7 totally sucks and you better hope Crosby doesn't make history and hoist his first cup (as a 22 year old captian) in Detroit aka hell on earth.

hey, retard, all i'm saying is that if the wings win and they gave it to malkin that'd be a total insult to the team that BEAT him. when you have a real team and not just two good players it's a little harder to stand out. why wouldn't the conn smythe go to the player who shut down the players on the team that lost? that's clearly more valuable than whatever performance a losing would have.

why would you give the conn to a person who LOST the cup? obviously, it's not the most valuable performance because it's the LOSING performance. you guys might actually be retarded. how many high profile people in the last week have gone on record as saying the winning team should get the conn?: don cherry, the CHIEF of the NHLPA....i seriously think you guys might be retarded.

What about Giguere winning the Conn Smyth despite losing in the finals????? I guess that was a huge mistake too. Either that or I have my facts wrong.
And Franzen, if the Red Wings win the Stanley Cup and malkin gets the Conn Smyth, I would be pissed too. Do us all a favor if that happens, just shut up about it and celebrate the Stanley Cup.

yeah, that's cuz giguere literally single handedly took his team to game 7 of the finals. if the pens were poised to win the cup the whole playoffs and somehow osgood were constantly at the top of the list and talked about like he's magic even though he lost would you be pissed? probably. if detroit wins then why was the first loser listed at the top for pretty much the entire playoffs?

All your harping on "team"and how the Pens have "just two good players"...seems to me that the last game we WON, neither of those two players had a point, and in every game you have lost, NONE of your good players made a difference. Take your "team" and shove it up your Gretzky.

The player with the best stats, or individual effort, wins the Conn Smyth, Stanley Cup winner or not. Like it or not, Franzen. It's sad but true that a winning team, with no clear MVP of their own (team effort), can not be awarded the CSmyth when the losing team, with an amazing individual effort, does. Who cares about the MVP anyway, except for one dude?

to those of you who don't feel that +/- is a valuable statistic, you're foolish. Malik has been on the ice for 35 goals for...and 33 against....if that doesn't paint a picture of defensive struggle, I don't know what does. That being said, if the Pens win the cup, he is a deserving MVP, but he in no way single handedly got them to the finals, and game 7. Crosby deserves as much credit, if not more, because of his leadership than Malkin does. Points are not the only thing that should merit an MVP award.
Rest assured, the Conn Smythe will go to the winning team of the Cup, as it should, UNLESS there is a player who ALL BY HIMSELF carries his team to the finals...which Malkin has not....end of story...

I'd say Crosby has been more important to the Penguins than Malkin throughout the playoffs (would the Penguins be in the finals if either player was not on the team? Probably not, but Crosby has stepped up in the big games and scored the goals that WON multiple series, while putting up a similar number of total points and better +/-). If you look at the finals, Staal (somehow) has been more important than both of them. Seems like it is for sure going to Malkin if the Penguins win, but I'm not sure that should be the case.
After saying all that, being a Red Wings fan, I of course am hoping the Wings dust off these fools, making this whole debate pointless. Give it to Osgood (although Zetterberg was probably more valuable than him throughout the playoffs).

miah - that's exactly what i'm saying. three of our top players, accounting for 1/3 or our cap space, are worthless seeing how much money they make. you can fit the ENTIRE rest of the forwards, except for Z, into homer, hossa and pavs salary. so it's a few of our good players vs. your two excellent players. that's the only reason it's even - because three of our top players, for whatever reason, suck ass and aren't doing anything.

"KHL is poaching NHL" has got to be the funniest thing I've seen in a long time. NHL has been poaching Russian (as well as other nationals) players for the past 20 some years. That was OK. NOW, it's not OK. What a hypocracy. Remember Larionov, Makarov, Fetisov, Mogilny and more recently Malkin amongst hundreds of others? All these gues were under contract in Russia, yet were poached to NHL with more money, better life, nice house, jeans, etc... Right or wrong they did it. Heck, if I was in that position in the 80's I would have done it too. Now that KHL can pach some players back is for one remarkable and second is very limited.
In my opinion, and yes I'm Russian, is that players under contract should honor their contracts unless the clubs agree agree on a release. If they can't, don't sign anything more than a year.
I'm also a Wings fan and hoping that they will win. But I have to agree, Malkin is the leading MVP candidate regardless of who wins. He has been exceptional this entire playoffs, even the few games when Crosby dissappeared. Complete turnaround from last year where Malkin was MIA. Ozzie, Zets and Fransen are descent choices if Wings win, but I still think Malkin should get it regardless. Look at his PP points, total points, assists, goals, minutes, on-ice leadership, game changing plays, etc!

#21 "because three of our top players, for whatever reason, suck ass and aren't doing anything. " Maybe you could give some props to thr Pens D. They are very under rated.
    # 19 "to those of you who don't feel that +/- is a valuable statistic, you're foolish. Malik has been on the ice for 35 goals for...and 33 against....if that doesn't paint a picture of defensive struggle" The +/- is way over rated. That stat is for the line on the ice, so if your on the ice with so, so defensive forwards, your going to have a bad +/- not to good of an individual stat. If Malkin can't play D then why did he lead the league in take aways(a good individual stat) this season.
