MONTREAL -- Standing in front of a massive New York Islanders logo inside Bell Centre, 2009 NHL Draft No. 1 pick John Tavares acknowledged that the next phase of his career involves more than just what happens on the ice.

He's now both an attraction and an ambassador for the franchise. "You want to be involved with the community and the fans and interact with them," he said.

Then again, there's another surefire way to reinvigorate the Islanders' fan base. "I think the main thing is you've got to win," he said. "That's the biggest thing to attract attention is to bring a winning product on the ice, and obviously that's the first step is getting a club that can compete for a playoff spot and make the playoffs."

Charles Wang shares that vision. The New York Islanders owner isn't about to sell Tavares as a savior -- even if his celebrity and success could mean everything from a return to on-ice glory to a new arena for the franchise.

We spoke with Wang about taking Tavares and how the fans and media will view him as a No. 1 pick playing for the Islanders.

Here's Charles Wang:

Q. What does it mean to your team to get a player like Tavares?

WANG: "The most important thing is that people must realize that he's another block in this building process. This is not a kid who is going to come in and be a superstar all of a sudden. It takes time. Even if he came up and played on the very first line, and played 20-some minutes, which is one third of the game ... this is not like basketball, or getting a starting pitcher in baseball. This is truly a team oriented sport. If you look at the talent we have, all of that coming together, we think we're in the right direction."

Q. Does that mean you won't be marketing him as a savior of the organization?

"No. I don't think anybody could. I don't think it's realistic to think of him as a savior. We have a great goalie who's coming back. We have great defense people."

Q. How do you think the New York media will treat him?

"I hope they treat him with patience. I hope that they have good expectations of him. And I think he will produce and he will show them what kind of player he is."

Q. Do you think they'll root for him at first?

"I don't know if they'll root for him. They'll record what he's doing. The New York media is a tough media. But if you do well, they reward you. If you do poorly, they get on your case. They're probably harsher than other areas.

Q. Finally, what was your feeling seeing all of those Islanders fans inside Nassau Coliseum at the draft party tonight?

"Ten thousand one hundred eighteen fans were there. Unbelievable. If those two guys didn't leave early, we would have had 10,120, but they walked out. (Laughing.) It's a testament and an endorsement of what we're trying to do. Don't forget: It was pouring rain out there. And still 10,000 people came."

You want to find out about how John Tavares will be as a pro? Just ask John Tavares....NO not himself, the OTHER John Tavares, his uncle.
Uncle John plays for the Buffalo Bandits of the National Lacrosse League, not just plays. He is arguably the greatest lacrosse player ever,#1 in goals, assists, and points.
He has helped the Bandits to 4 titles in their 18 years of existence.
Watching the the older JT has given the younger JT an idea of how to handle himself...not to get too big of head, realize the importance of teamwork...Little JT would even work as a ballboy when he was a young boy.
He even played both up until about 15 or 16...the money is WAY,WAY BETTER!!!
    There are a lot of hockey players that as youngsters,played box lacrosse in the summer,some have even said;
IF we could've made hockey type money playing lax..we'd be playing lax!!
If the younger JT is anything like his uncle...then you Islanders fans have got yourself a great player and even better person, and by the way..Yes I am a HUGE Bandit fan,so in closing:
    LET'S GO BANDITS!!!!!

The Islanders' success rides more on the durability of DiPietro's groin. They're next offseason move should be to find a better trainer or stretching coach.

I like that they used their 3rd Jersey instead of that horrid primary one. Too bad Buttman is making them wait another year just because the paperwork wasn't in on time. Jersey orders for Tavares are already pouring and if you got season tickets tonight, you were getting a meet and greet with Tavares next week. THAT'S why it was important for them to take JT and not Hedman or Duschene. Instant fan base energy.

Why the hell did they bother to trade up for De Haan they could have had him at 26, hopefully they do the smart thing and take Ferraro with the 31.

Hey Ranger Fan, go pound salt - only Islander fans can talk smack about our owner.......and today is not that day ! Wang has finally figured out that he (and Milbury) are not smarter than the rest of the hockey world and did not draft a goalie or some project at # 1 !!!! From what my friends tell me - deHaan would not have lasted till 26 and while a few years away, will be an impact PP type defenseman who has played with Tavares in the past. Take Chicken Parm Jr. at 31 or Ryan O'Reilly --- and a great day for us - not so for you Ranger fans ! At the end of the day, our tee time was just *slightly* better than yours and we get Tavares !

Never has so little been written about so little. One suspects Daddy Puck has been sitiing in a few too many hospitality suites imbibing a few too many of the new (recycled) Canadiens' owners' local brew and trying out his favorite pickup line ["Hi. I'm Puck Daddy and bloggers, though totally geeky looking and better off behind a keyboard than on the TV screen, are now thought to be semi-cool, almost socially acceptable and famous amongst shut-ins. Wanna do me?"] on the long-legged hookers hired for the week as hostesses. [By-the-by, TV/video adds ten pounds of nerd.]
Puck Daddy exclusives to look forward to later in the day:
John Tavares on the merits of different types of frozen pizza.
Louis Leblanc on what it's like to be a Frenchie.
Nazem Kadri on what it like to grow up with such an al Quida name and whether Homeland Security will let him play any games south of the border.
Brian Burke on his favorite memories of Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett.
    Hard-hitting journalism 24/7.

It's obviously to no great surprise that the Islanders took Tavares with the #1 pick, there are some rewards for being horrible in the previous regular season. I'm a little confused why they would trade up to #12 and pick a defenseman who obviously looks years away (a 6'0 170 pound blueliner will get destroyed at the NHL level, better start drinking the protein shakes kid) even if he turns out to be a pretty good power play guy, you already have Mark Streit as your quarterback for a few years who turned out to be a pretty solid addition last season. The team needs SCORING up front....period.... DiPietro is literally being held together by duct tape, if hope hinges on him returning to previous All-Star form then time to fold up your tents Isles fans and watch the parade of McDonald's and other cast-offs take their turn in goal. Personally if I'm the Islanders I give Danis a crack at the starting job. Liked his makeup and mental toughness in net (this is coming from a Rangers fan) He kept them in a lot of games last season which they had absolutely no business being in (of course that would mean the Isles have to admit they made a 15 year mistake which eventually they will just give it time). Interested to see how Tavares performs at the NHL level, he's not going to get much help at first but at least he should put some pucks in the net and give the few that show up at the Nassau mausoleum something to cheer about.

Oh...And that Tavares kid looks a lot shorter, fatter and, um, Asian than I thought he'd be. Not sure how well that'll work for the Islanders.

obviously mr. wang hasn't heard about sidney crosby. his role as savior and finally winning the cup. they were all over him in terms of marketing ever since he was drafted. well, i guess tavares isn't crosby calibre.

Alright... the next person to call Crosby the savior is going to get waterboarded by Dick Cheney. Waterboarded and then mistakenly shot while duck hunting with Dick Cheney.
All I saw these playoffs was him whining, throwing cheap shots, and pretty much ruining the beauty which is hockey. I nearly copied the part where he got "injured" while HOLDING the Red Wings player to the boards. I'm not even a Red Wings fan! Think about it! He could be in "General Hospital" or "Days of Our Lives" the way he pulled that off.
I'll put it nice and simple: Tavares = Daigle.
