Puck Daddy - NHL

We will cover the repercussions of this news throughout the day and on our 1 p.m. rumor chat here on Puck Daddy, but TSN has broken the news that free agent Marian Hossa has signed a one-year, $7.4 million deal with the Detroit Red Wings. Hossa informed the Penguins he was leaving this morning.

What does a one-year deal mean? What does Hossa rejecting the Pittsburgh Penguins, Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers mean? How much will alcohol sales spike in the Steel City for the rest of the day, maybe for the entire summer?

Check out the Puck Daddy Rumors Chat with Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period and Lyle "Spector" Richardson of Fox Sports at 1 p.m. EDT.

Looks like money wasnt to big a factor for Hossa, looks like he knows that Detroit has a better chance than Pittsburgh to win it all again! Pittsburgh will have a hard time getting back to the finals but The Red Wings chances have more than tripled to repeat agin!! Go Red Wings!!

So much for the Wings' statement that no one would ever make more than Lidstrom.

GO REDWINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So Hossa is looking for a cup next year and a huge payday the year after! Its unfortunate that he gave Pittsburgh the illusion they could resign him, and then go sign with the Soviets from Detroit. The rich getting richer...

It looks like nobody wants to play in Pittsburgh if you ask me. Maybe they all got sick of Cindy's whinning. The Pens are 6-9 in the east right now!

If the Wings play in Pittsburgh next year, Hossa better have multiple body guards. It won't be pretty.

Soviets from Detroit?...Swedes? Bow down to the best franchise in hockey(town) right now. They were never going to win with the salary cap, right?...As long as Ken Holland is GM, with Scotty Bowman as a consultant, the Wings are going to be contenders. Oh yeah, let's not forget about Steve Yzerman as VP...
They sign Brad Stuart to a 4-year extension (which everyone thought would be a bust and a bad aquisition), and now Hossa?!! LOOK OUT!

#12, body guards are not a problem, we have a roster full, and besides that, you have to realize the wings travel well so there will be plenty of cheering in all arenas. GO REDWINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #9, soviets in detroit? what the hell does that mean, surely you mean sweds........sour grapes!

the pens will be fine next year. Remember they play in the east and they already have alot of young guys in the minors that can play. pittsburghs going to be a tough team anyway with the signing of malking to an extension.
everyone in the west look out because detroit already destroyed everyone last year and they just made another goal scorer apart of the team.

Looks like the pens are rebuilding, again! Maybe if Sid wasn't such a cry baby, people would want to join his team. When your leaders are the biggest winers in the league, no one will follow.

i wouldn't call having the two best players in the game rebuilding. Hossa wanted the big paycheck and he thinks by playing with detroit he won't get overshadowed like he did in pittsburgh.
Look for the pens to be back in the same situation as last year.
    Back to the cup

It's a risky move. Zetterberg and Franzen are both in the final years of their contracts. The Red Wings are basically banking on both of them agreeing to sign next summer and not going after free agency. I guess when you are Detroit you can take that risk, knowing most people would want to stay... but it's still a risk.
In the short term, though, good for the Wings!

Hossa has played with great players everywhere he has been and Detroit is no different. It should be exciting for Wings fans to see Lidstrom and Rafalski zip passes to him and he flies through the neutral zone. This guy can hit the 50 goal (97 points total) mark if he stays healthy.
How come I dont hear the Rent-a -player messeges around here? Isn't that what they are doing?
