Dear Eddie Olczyk,
Hi. How are you? Probably pretty tired from all of that expert analysis, we imagine. Anyhoo, you may recall when we reported recently on your boast that the Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings on NBC would outdraw Game 5 of the NBA Finals between the Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics on ESPN. Please recall your guarantee:
"It is a hockey town, and this being a Stanley Cup Finals Game 3 versus whatever game it would be in the Eastern Final for the Pistons ... I'm not afraid of stepping out, and I would say that Game 3 on NBC, we will win that ratings war."
We didn't really say this at the time, but the boast struck us as a tad outlandish. Maybe closer to impossible, in a Pistons-lovin' town like Detroit. And yet here's the Globe & Mail, confirming your amazing precognitive abilities:
Pittsburgh's 3-2 win on Wednesday night earned a 2.8 national rating and an 18.2 rating in Detroit, beating out the 15.9 rating for the Pistons' matchup with the Boston Celtics.
Some may say this is simply a case of the hockey being available on broadcast television while the hoops were on cable. But we'd rather believe that Hockeytown has reaffirmed its reputation, Detroit fans know good entertainment when they see it, and that we'd like Eddie Olczyk to pick our lottery numbers for the next year.
Eddie O -- can we call you Eddie O? -- in honor of your Messier-like postseason prediction, we'd like to honor you with an image from your playing days, wearing the best-looking uniform in hockey.
