Puck Daddy - NHL

The Philadelphia Flyers revealed their new third jerseys last night at a fan event, and they are gloriously retro. As this staggeringly pretentious video shows, the color orange has tied together the great moments in the franchise's history: The Stanley Cups in the 1970s, Ron Hextall's Conn Smythe performances in the 1980s and Lindros's fourth concussion in the 1990s.

As you can see, the sweaters mimic the classic Flyers jersey. In many ways, this is really fantastic: Unlike the San Jose Sharks, who are running away from their signature color with a new black jersey, the Flyers are embracing what makes their look distinct. That's commendable.

But ... white nameplates. Yes, they're a part of Flyers history, having been temporarily used on the back of the orange jersey for "Game of the Week" appearances back before they had names on them.

Also parts of Flyers history: Bill Dineen, Paul Coffey and Roman Cechmanek. They shouldn't bring any of them back, either.

The only question here for us is if the obsolete, garish white nameplate takes the rest of a solid jersey down with it. Retro is one thing; the white nameplates are like installing a rotary phone in a million-dollar condo. With that ...

Pass or Fail: The Philadelphia Flyers' new third jerseys?

I think it would have been a nice touch to go with no names on the back, but I'm tired of seeing black jerseys for every team, glad to see the orange uni's back in action

Pass: Why not? Nothing wrong with doing something no other team is doing. Didn't the 1980 USA jerseys have a blue name plate on their white jersey? I thought that was pretty cool.

At first, my stomach was turning. But the more I look at them, the more I like. And it is nice to seen some originality in this department for the first time since the 3rd jersey was invented!

I have a feeling I'm going to be in the minority here, but I love the whole design...nameplates included.

Pass: I like the white name plates. if their was a team to pull it off it would be the flyers BECAUSE it is historically correct. with that said it's different and it's a step away from the RBK robofuturedisco suits the players are wearing today. which might i add i HATE the broken stripe look on the back of the socks it's too euro.

Pass all the way ... now if they could just get rid of their normal jersey and go back to the pre lockout looks of them everyone would be better off.
And hey it isn't fair to bring up Paul Coffey. He was still great when he got to the Flyers (I remember going to his debut game). Problem happened on a New Years Eve game in Vancouver when Eric Lindros ran his own teammate over, I remember watching the telecast and thinking "well that is the end of his career" and unfortunately I was correct.

Fail...by the way, at first glance, I didn't realize that those were the actual players wearing the jerseys. I thought it was a family! The bald dad (Metropolit), the teenage kid (Coburn), and the mom (Timonen)!

I always get flack for being a Devils fan, in the sense that people think I have an inability to respect and admire Flyers or Rangers or Islanders. Which is stupid, because I respect the hell out of Richards and you are correct that Timonen is a flat-out beast on defense. Really, really underrated, IMO.

PASS PASS PASS. The Flyers shouldn't be black to start with. The Flyers are STILL known as the tuff team that will ruff you up. Flyers were made to wear prison orange. Flyer fans enjoy the fact that they can walk into ANY arena and can be picked out from any seat and will gladly let you know they are there. (Security at other rinks like that as well.) As for the nameplate. ITS A NAME PLATE WHO CARES. If they went retro then they went all the way and not half azed like so many teams.
