(Monday Update: The Capitals said late Monday afternoon that Ovechkin was "examined and treated by the team’s medical staff and underwent an MRI exam," and is currently listed as "week-to-week.")

In the second period of the Washington Capitals 5-4 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets, Alex Ovechkin(notes) fell to the ice awkwardly after getting twisted up with Raffi Torres(notes). He got up, favoring his left side, and immediately skated to the Capitals bench before heading to the locker room.

The Capitals are calling it an "upper body" injury, and at one point during the game GM George McPhee was saying Ovechkin could return. But he missed most of the second period and all of the third, remaining in the trainer's room. He's officially "day-to-day"; the team has an off day on Monday so the next bit of news should come on Tuesday morning.

Abram Fox of DC Sports Box reported that "Ovechkin was dressed in a suit, not showing any signs of a sling" and wasn't in pain. He also had a transcript of Ovechkin's presser on District Puckhouse, beginning with a reference to a dust-up with Jason Chimera(notes) and Jared Boll(notes) that earned all three minors for roughing:

Q. What happened there along the boards? It seemed to me that Chimera was angry from the hit in the first period and he kind of bumped you.
AO: Yeah, it was just a moment in the game, so nothing happened, he hit me and I hit him. It was a battle there, but nothing happened.
Q. Did someone grab you? How did you get hurt?
AO: I can't tell you how I get hurt. But it's day-to-day, but you know just in case I can go back on the ice.
Q. So you don't think it's very serious?
AO: I don't know.
Q. What is it?
AO: [laughing] You think I'm going to tell you?

Capitals Outsider posted video of Ovie's postgame session with the press:

The scuttlebutt from those at the game is left shoulder, but nothing's official yet. Keep in mind that Ovechkin's missed a grand total of four games in his four previous NHL seasons.

CSN showed him running into Torres, I think it was him, and then he went off the ice.

nice =D well, i don't mean "nice" that he's hurt (well... kinda). but if Ovie's out for a while, we now get to see if the Caps are for real - can they handle it w/o one of the best players in the league. the Pens did, and then they won the Cup... should be interesting.

The better question is how the heck did you get both Kovalchuk and Ovechkin? Are there like 2 teams in your league?

But I feel your pain, seems to be a lot of injuries this season to key people, lost Kovalchuk myself.

I don't think it's serious and yes, it happened when he collided with Torres at the whistle. Just an awkward collision. Ovie would be a big loss obviously, but the Caps are not a one man team. Only ignorant tools think that.
    @ Bluefins
I was just gonna ask the same thing. Ovie and Kovy on the same team is impossible in any decent league. Maybe he got one of his friends really drunk and convinced him to trade Kovy.

I was watching the game too, (cap's fan) and didn't see how he got hurt either. Maybe he wanted to watch Favre beat the Packers, or something.

Perhaps Don Cherry could have a field day?? Hope Ovie's ok. Bummer they lost to the Jackets. Hopefully the Caps will bounce back when they play NJ Devils later this week. Good job to Brooks Laich on his 2 goal earlier tonight!
