Dany Heatley(notes) was this close to becoming a member of the Edmonton Oilers. As was reported last night on TSN and Sportsnet, the Oilers and Ottawa Senators had a deal in place that would have sent Andrew Cogliano(notes), Dustin Penner(notes) and Ladislav Smid(notes) to Ottawa in exchange for Heatley, as long as he approved the deal. Just after midnight Eastern time, TSN's Bob McKenzie put the kibosh on the trade reporting that Heatley had rejected the deal saying, "For now, and quite possibly forever, the deal is dead."

An added twist to this story is the much-discussed $4 million bonus that Heatley is due today. As McKenzie reported, the NHL said that the money can be transferred to a new team as long as the deal is completed by midnight tonight, otherwise the Senators are on the hook for it. This allows Ottawa general manager Bryan Murray another day to find a team to Heatley's liking and one willing to not only take on his salary, but pay the $4 million bonus. Murray has said that if the Senators do indeed wind up paying that bonus, Heatley isn't going to be dealt.

When the New York Rangers dumped Scott Gomez(notes) and his large salary to Montreal earlier this evening, alarm bells went off everywhere and rumors began to surface that that a Heatley-to-New York deal was imminent. Rangers GM Glen Sather had dumped significant salary from the team's cap and even stated in his post-trade conference call that three teams had spoken with him since the news broke. All signs pointed to Heatley shopping for apartments in New York City, but as of now, he remains property of the Ottawa Senators. Sather and Murray now have more time to work out a deal if New York is truly interested.

UPDATE: Sportsnet reports that the deal is "on hold" and Bob McKenzie has updated his report with this:

"Heatley was asked to waive his no-movement clause by the Senators but he didn't oblige. Which is not the same thing as an outright or unequivocal rejection.

...

No one should suggest Heatley is prepared to waive his no-movement clause to go to Edmonton any more than it should be suggested he absolutely won't."

This thing is getting complicated quickly. Stay tuned.

Not too sure if a basket case is a good fit for the NY media.

Just imagine Heatley and Avery in NY and the headlines we'd see this coming season. I'm wondering if NY still has an interest as the Rangers were a possible destination before the trade should have happened with Edmonton.

At least Heatley's consistent, he p'd off two teams and probably half of Canada by nixing that trade. Now Ottawa's on the hook for $4 million for a player that doesn't want to be there.

I get the sneaky suspicion that no matter where this guy ends up, he's not going to be happy. Some people are just like that.

I wonder what's up in Ottawa? Chris Neil just turned down 1.7 million! He's obviously been getting high with Dany. Hey, Chris, just make sure you guys get a cab!

Well if I'm Ottawa's GM and head coach, Heatley's not going anywhere, will play a minimum of 45 minutes per night, play on both PP's and PK's and will become a backup goalie once every 5 games. Make him earn his money.

the senators are asking for to much. the rangers would have to give up dubinsky and staal for someone who's in my opinion best years are behind him. and on top of losing 2 young prospects pay an addition 4 million. not worth it. I'd rather see salther go aggressively after Hossa.

Now Cogliano, Penner and Smid know that Tambellini considers them expendable/tradebait. Well done Dany, you didn't even have to enter that lockeroom to negatively affect things. Impressive.

Edmonton couldn't buy a perogie at the moment. Bit of a pity to see as an Oiler fan, but then again, we've dodged some bullets before (Nylander), but we can't even get our draft picks to play at home for crying out loud (Omark).

the sens shouldn't trade him. make him play in ottawa next season and deal with all the crap he'll get. he'll play well because he knows his play is the only thing that can get him out of ottawa. trading him right now is not the right things for the senators. they're not getting half of his worth back.
ps. as a leafs fan i'm thoroughly enjoying this..and the scott gomez trade to the habs.

Just when your ready to go out and buy that new Oilers Jersey with Heatley on the back of it, he pulls this crap.
Hey if your going to whine and complain about playing somewhere after they sign you to a huge extension, you should go wherever they trade you. Ottawa needs to get the most out of this trade, and Cogs speed and Smids toughness not to mention youth and well I guess Penner (LOL) Its just depressing someone could be so selfish. Maybe you should crash another ferrari with you just in it this time

what did edmonton ever do to heatley???? he saved the oilers from being completely ripped off.....you know nyr traded gomez to get some cap space....the only way i see them getting heatley is if they package redden or rosival in the deal......i still think that the LA Kings should trade their vets(handzus, frolov, williams, and priessing) for heatley.....him playing next to kopitar and brown w/ johnson and doughty in control of the blue line for quick.....man they would definitely make the playoffs, too bad they had to let camm, o'sullivan, blake, boyle, visnovsky all go.....damn u cloutier...u ruined hockey in socal for an extra 6 yrs

As before this guy Heatley is a basket case. Doesn't know what he wants and where he wants to go but he does. makes seven million plus a year and moans and whines. He is a typical spoiled sport brat that has never grown up and never will. They should trade him to Philly then we would have two Edmonton boosters on that team. Edmonton may not be New York or LA but u know what? for that reason I live here happily. To Heatley - Piss Off

LOL you guys are all wrong about Heatley, he DID NOT nix the trade, he has neither agreed or declined to move the NMC and has done nothing wrong, he has one more day to decide. The real ****s in all of this are the turncoat fans who trash him because of some speculative reporting when he hasn't said a single word. You should all be ashamed of yourselves and especially Oiler fans who turned on him before the facts were out.
