OK, follow us on this. Because it's a weird one.
An email rolled into the Puck Daddy inbox Tuesday night from reader Donald R. with the images above and the subject "David Backes Eating PB&J In Penalty Box." The whole thing seemed so [expletive] insane, we were intrigued.
A buddy of mine was watching this game on Gamecenter Live, Backes took a minor penalty for roughing [at 18:22 of the first], and all of a sudden he tells us that David Backes(notes) was making a sandwich in the box! He pulled the slices of bread from his sleeve and the peanut butter and jelly out of his pants. I can hardly believe it myself.
The game between the St. Louis Blues and the Atlanta Thrashers wasn't televised but was streamed online, so the incident -- if it happened -- wasn't being widely discussed in the usual haunts. But others claimed to have seen the same thing, like Arthur S. on Twitter: "Wtf? Did david backes just make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in the penalty box?!"
And like Joel G. on Twitter: "K WTF? Blues player just pulled a jar of something out of his pants in the penalty box."
So some people watching the game via the Atlanta Thrashers Jumbotron feed thought they saw ... well, David Backes making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in the penalty box.
Operative phrase: "The Atlanta Thrashers Jumbotron feed."
On further review, this looks nothing like David Backes. There are no numbers on the sweater. And even though the game's in Atlanta, there's absolutely no one seated around the penalty box. It's a scoreboard comedy bit; and because the only video of the game available to fans (because of VERSUS exclusivity) was a Jumbotron feed through NHL GameCenter Live, it went "over the air" and confusion reigned.
So keep that in mind the next time your team is relegated to the online streaming ghetto. We don't want a dozen emails about massive outbreaks of kissing on camera or runaway Zamboni races ...
