Puck Daddy - NHL

Two bits of Gary Bettman goodness this morning. First up is a visit to the exciting world of NHL Players Association escrow paybacks, as David Shoalts of the Globe & Mail (again taking time from his reporting on fake Twitter feeds) writes that players will have to give back about 13 percent of their salaries this year because revenue projections weren't met by the owners.

The catch is that since the NHLPA raised its escrow withholdings, players will actually get a bit of a refund this summer. From Shoalts and his interview with PA chief Paul Kelly:

If the union and league projections prove to be correct, the players will keep just 87 per cent of this year's salaries. That would be after they receive a refund of about 5 per cent of their salaries plus interest, Kelly said in an e-mail message. "This is not etched in stone," Kelly said, "and is based on the currently available data and reasonable financial projections by the league and the member clubs."

The escrow payments will hurt the league's lower-paid players the most. A player earning the NHL minimum of $475,000 (all currency U.S.) will see his salary shrink to $413,250 with the 13-per-cent escrow payment.

Poor bastards ... Rich Peverley gotta eat, you know?

Much more interesting, though slightly less imperative, is the battle brewing between the New York Islanders and the NHL over next season's jerseys.

For the first time since drafting Kyle Okposo in 2006, the Islanders finally did something right: Bringing back a classic royal blue jersey as their third jersey this season. Quite popular with the fans, the Isles want to elevate it to primary jersey status for next season. But the NHL has rules, and marketing partnerships, that apparently prevent such requests from getting approved.

More about that in a moment; first, a question for the puckheads: Now that we've seen the new crop of third jerseys for a season, which ones deserve to be elevated to permanent status? The St. Louis Blues jerseys come to mind, no?

Back on the Islanders, Chris Botta's NYI Point Blank broke the news that the Islanders will have the same jersey rotation next year as they had this season "barring a last-second, long-shot, precedent-setting decision by the NHL"; despite asking the League for permission to wear their retro third jerseys as their permanent sweaters beginning in 2009-10.

Alas, it appears the request will be denied, and Point Blank explains why:

The reason for the lack of immediate fan gratification is timing. The merchandising division of the NHL requires teams to apply for a primary jersey change two full years before the switch. The Islanders' popular Third Jerseys were completed in time for this season. Filing the paperwork with the league before the deadline was impossible.

[...]

The Islanders, well aware of the hallelujahs from their fanbase, have appealed to the league for approval to make this year's Third Jersey their No. 1. (Of course, the team would have to create a white "road" version to match the home blues). As of this date, the league is not willing to break the rule. Among many reasons, there are too many hurdles with manufacturers and distributors - and too little time.

What this boils down to is the League battling a team over its marketing desires and decisions. If this were MSG and the Dolans, we might be seeing a lawsuit; but the Islanders apparently will allow the process to play out and hope to have the retro jerseys adopted for 2010-11.

In a way, the timing might be perfect: Getting new sweaters for a "rebirth" season of Islanders hockey as the young crop of players mature.

On the other hand ... shouldn't teams like the Islanders, who have their obvious marketing challenges and hurdles, have the right to push this sort of thing through the red tape if it's beneficial to the franchise?

But the League knows who butters its bread. It's not the NHL Store Powered by the New York Islanders, after all.

H/T UniWatch for the Isles news bit.

Buffalo comes to mind with the third jersey becoming the norm, but they should also replace the road jersey.

I feel better about the Islanders now than I did a year ago. The youth movement is starting to pay dividends as guys like Okposo and Comeau mature. Bring in a sniper, and you maybe have a playoff team next season.

Buffalo and St. Louis have to be.
Philadelphia I can agree with, not because I think their 3rds are THAT good, but because their current ones are that bad.

What's the point of being an NHL team owner if you can't make marketing decisions for your own team?

Agreeing with Matt: Sabres, Islanders and Flyers, definitely; Blues and Oilers, maybe. I never wanted the Sabres to change, anyway. An updated version of the original logo would have been better than "The Demonic Goat Head." The "Buffaslug" in just marginally better with the blue, gold and white. @Wade: You're right. Something stinks and it's called Gary Bettman.

Gotta go with the Oilers/Blues/Sabres in this one.
Would the NHL fast track the Isles jerseys if Long John Silvers became a primary sponsor?

First off, I don't know how the league could complain about bumping up the sweater - don't they already make more money of throwback hockey sweaters as it is? I mean, they are still selling Hartford Whalers, Winnipeg Jets and Quebec Nordiques gear, why not just go with the old Islanders until they move the team to KC (as previously mentioned). They'll sell more definitely.
As for the other third selections, Buffalo is a must to move to the top - death to the buffaslug. St. Louis could do well with that one, but I doubt they will. I like the throw back Leafs crest - they've been simplistic for so long they could do with a change - am I still talking sweaters here? Zing!
No fan of the powder blue Penguins or any of the Montreal selections. Sharks and Oil - meh. Flyers - there is a difference? Do enjoy the caption to that one - "The bright orange will help you see them coming before they plant you in the glass"... nice.
    Happy Drunk Day.

The Isles, Oilers, Blues, and Sabres should all switch their 3rd jerseys to their primaries.

I like the Blues third jersey, but it should stay as the alternate 3rd jersey. The current white "road" jersey was the alternate when the Blues had those awful Gretzky era blue and red diaganol style jerseys, and the white jersey looked so much better that the Blues adopted it as their primary. The more you defiate from the classic jersey styles, for this instance a sweater with a circle logo, it tends to just look more like a companies marketing campaign rather than a renaissance of a teams appearance. I do like alternates because they offer a different look here and there for a team, but this is hockey and not an episode of Americas Top Model afterall.

I'm a big fan of the retro jeresey, mostly because all the new jerseys suck. I say 2011-2012 is mandatory retro jersey season, if you don't have a retro jersey, one will be assigned to you at random.

I think the third jersey is a great step up, presentation-wise, for the Isles, but that said - the economy is in enough trouble without having retailers getting the shaft for having a full stockroom of current Isles jerseys that no one will want now.

While I agree that the Blues could move their third jerseys to primary status, they don't need to do it. They get enough use of their thirds, the fans love them, and (most importantly) there is nothing wrong with their primary jerseys now. I can't say the same for Buffalo, which is why fans are moving to dump the buffaslug. Even HSBC Arena replaced the center ice logo with the old one.

The Kings jersey looks like an old LA Raiders cast off and should be banned accordingly. Any sport which already has Gary Bettman definitely doesn't need Al Davis as well.

Buffalo... we gotta ditch the Buffa-slug... St. Louis has a nice 3rd too... and the Isles (God help them) have a storied past (in both a good way and bad way) but they should switch back to the classic Isles jersey.
Bettman should let Colin Campbell deal with marketing partnerships, that way they can be as nebulous and arbitrary as the NHL's discipline.

I wish Montreal would go with that 3rd jersey as their official road jersey - the one with the blue stripe in the center, and the white base. I LOVE that jersey. I agree the Buffaslug must die, but those Philly orange atrocities hurt my eyes in a way they haven't since the electric yellow Boston Teddy Bear Head thirds died its well deserved death. I've said before the St Louis third is just about the classiest damned jersey out there, and I would buy one in a second, even though I'm not a huge Blues fan (I have Boyes and Backes on seperate fantasy teams, and I was a big Brett Hull fan back in the day). I agree with the SI column, Vancouver needs to find an iconic logo, vause they haven't had one EVER. The closest thing to iconic was the Uber V neck, and thats just cause it was so god-awful.

What does Oklahoma think of the retro blue jersey's?? The franchise should worry about fans in their new home.
