So moments after we posted why women aren't offended by Sean Avery's remarks, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman revealed how offended he was by Avery's actions, giving the Dallas Stars pest a six-game suspension without pay for his comments in Calgary on Tuesday.

From the NHL:

Avery also agreed to seek professional anger-management evaluation and, if necessary, structured counseling in light of his pattern of behavior, which the NHL has deemed unacceptable and antisocial behavior. Avery will not be eligible to play again for the Stars until Dec. 16, when Dallas hosts the Phoenix Coyotes. He has already served two games of the suspension, Tuesday's win against Calgary and Wednesday's loss to Edmonton.

"Mr. Avery has expressed remorse for his recent comments and has sought a professional anger management evaluation," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. "I will require that he follow through with that process as a condition of his returning to the ice and that he complies with any and all recommendations."

... "Mr. Avery has been warned repeatedly about his conduct and comments, which have too often been at odds with the manner in which his more than 700 fellow players conduct themselves," Bettman said. "Playing in the National Hockey League is a privilege, requiring a high standard of personal behavior. Mr. Avery forfeits that privilege for six games."

Dallas Stars Blog calculates Avery's financial hit at $124,999.99.

Interesting that the suspension is retroactive to Tuesday. One could interpret this as a four-game suspension with time served, which clearly puts this in line with the League's previous punishments for racial slurs on the ice -- those suspensions would run about three games in serious instances.

So what have we learned from the NHL's actions on this, and by the hockey world's reactions?

Two things we've learned from this mess.

The first is the remarkable gap in moral outrage between American and Canadian media and fans.

Like in the Toronto media chattering class, which treated Avery's "sloppy seconds" quip with near-total indignation; like he had wheeled a flat screen in front of Dion Phaneuf's locker and played a sex tape of himself and Elisha Cuthbert set to Green Day's "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)." Even the humorous boys at the Kurtenblog couldn't find the mirth in Avery's taunting.

Compare that to this report from Puck Daddy reader Felix, originally from Montreal but now in Dallas, on the local fan reaction to Avery:

On talk radios here in Dallas, people were laughing it off, saying they had no idea why he was even suspended. No one here (at least around the office and on sports talk radio) thought it was a big deal at all, but apparently Stars management did not take it well.

Did anyone else sense a cultural, geographic divide on this issue?

The second is that even though the NHL didn't hit Avery with the 10-gamer some assumed he'd receive, it still has established an unfortunate benchmark for words over deeds.

Yes, Avery was a repeat offender. But as far as tarnishing the NHL's image, his words can't be compared to the violent acts we witness on the ice that truly tarnish the integrity of the game. And the League's swift action here, and complicit action in many cases of on-ice violence, is embarrassing.

This is what eight games looks like, when the Anaheim Ducks' Chris Pronger stomped on Ryan Kesler's leg in March 2008. Whether you think it's warranted or not, it was Pronger's eighth suspension.

And here's what Gary Bettman now believes is what a six-game suspension looks like in his League:

I wonder if Avery is aware that he's wearing women's sunglasses...
Seriously, though, this is rediculous. "The attention only encourages her."

As posted before I don't think it's so much of a Geographic distance as an age difference.
For the record not an Avery fan but should have never missed 1 game.
I think the real question is what are the Stars plans for Avery as he isn't listed on the website and it seems like some teammates and Mgnt are welcoming his "release".

I do agree with you Wysh that the NHL has not been providing sufficient suspensions to players who commit violent on-ice hits, but I still feel that the NHL got this one right. While I would easily swap the length of Avery's suspension for Zielers' (believe that was the guy who clocked Foote from behind). It's a bad argument to say that because the NHL hasn't yet handed down an appropriate suspension for on-ice hits, that the NHL should let this slide, because that leads us to an even greater divide between what players should get and what the do/will get. Precedents are a dangerous thing, and so is comparing suspension lengths. Just because Pronger wasn't suspended long enough doesn't mean that the NHL should make (and be forced to make) the same mistake over and over again. Hopefully when we do get a new commissioner, he has a few Roger Godell traits, and we can finally sort out all of these suspension inequalities. But at least Bettman didn't go overboard with this one and give Avery 10+ games. That's one thing to be thankful for.

Is it wrong that I'm happy to hear that for once it's not the Americans being puritanical about something sex-related? Now if Avery had gotten a bj from an intern...

Six games is ludicrous. Should have been four - by the team. And those four should have been the one against Calgary, and the next three against Calgary. If they play him against Calgary in Feb, Mar or Apr, they are asking for all sorts of trouble. And Phaneuf will be put in a very awkward situation as well.

I am upset with the suspension. Avery did nothing? He just spouted off again, BFD. When is the NHL going to wake-up and suspend players like Jordin Tootoo for hits from behind to the head and neck? Or suspend Chris Pronger for intent to injure when he lifts his elbows into the jaws of opponents causing massiv concussions(see Dean McCammond), or Gary Roberts last year in the finals taking shots aat Johan Franzen's head after it had been revealed by the NHL that Franzen had suffered an internal head bleed.

Hmm. I never thought about this through the prism of demeaning women. To me, it's just an exceptionally low class thing to do. To seek out a camera to make a completely unfunny, high-school level remark reflects very poorly on him. Since he is a representative of the league, it also reflects poorly on the NHL and I see no problem with the league sanctioning him for it. Frankly, I'm much more surprised by anyone over the age of 15 supporting him on this. Have we sunk so low that "sloppy seconds" now qualifies as humor? Come on, how old is he? This is right down there with "I know you are but what am I?"

I think Avery's about to go on permanent suspension from the Dallas Stars. If someone else wants to take on that nutjob they can start using him as of December 16.

I wonder what would have happened if an NFL player made the same remarks to reporters?
If Terrell Owens had banged some players wife/girlfriend then told reporters about it in a pre-meditated speech using language that was offensive to the woman involved I think this would have been a big deal in Dallas.
Is there some sort of double standard in sports leagues?

Look, there's a big difference between a cutting comment and possibly cutting a guys leg open with a skate. Hits to the heads, stomps, tomahawking all could end someone's career. Think about that. End someone's livelihood through injury. Giving a suspension of this length for a comment obviously meant to build excitement is ridiculous. TSN was already hyping the game based on the Iginla comments, so Avery was trying to get something real out of the game. It's one thing for his team to suspend him and make him get anger management or whatever, but this is not a league issue. I still want to see the 20 players that boinged Anna Kournikova start tossing around zingers though... though that's so 90s.

When did stupid comments equal anger management? There was no anger. This was a premeditated speech meant to stir up an opponent. Where the heck is the anger in that? Real anger is getting frustrated by idiotic calls by the refs and going after them. THAT would require anger management. This just shows how moronic this league has been lately when all Bettman had to do was look across town to the Cowboys and Pacman Jones to see what actions call for a real suspension.

of course mike modano would be offended by this given that amanda williford (willa ford) lived with chuck liddell. i imagine that if chuck did something similar to avery his words would be worse than "sloppy seconds" and instead of a suspension, his next fight would sell out. after hearing avery's comments, i was tempted to fly to calgary, citing some obscure business meeting, on the company's amex, to watch dion phanuef make a run at sean. i am a stars fan and sean avery fan, but facts are facts and i mean this in several ways:
    1) sean did in fact date elisha cuthbert
    2) dion phaneuf is likely the best open ice hitter in the nhl
    3) dion phaneuf is a good fighter
    4) sean avery is 5'10" and 195 pounds
    5) dion phaneuf is 6'3" and 212 pounds
    6) marty turco's goaltending is more comical than sean avery's sunglasses decision for the hearing, funny the irony of marty openly calling sean out. he should hope that sean's antics get more media attention than his flaccid attempt at being a solid goaltender.
    7) brad richards and sean are decently good friends, i read a report recently that tried to read between the lines of richard's interview about the incident. somehow "i don't want to talk about sean" was translated into "i hate sean avery for everything he stands for". i guess i can see how they are somewhat related...
    8) good thinking, brett hull, for citing that tom hicks is "one of the best owners in all of sports." let's not forget that this guy owns the texas rangers.
    9) dallas fans have enough clowns in sports here (to, pacman "the killer" jones, jerry jones, tony "the pinkie" romo) to worry about a sean avery comment.
    thanks,

Here's where I see the difference; in Canada, hockey is a religion and is sacred.
In America, it's a sport...in many ways, a fringe sport.
Avery's comments were not that shocking in the spectrum of "entertainment" (think Howard Stern) commonly peddled in America. There's no "sanctity issue" in the States.
In Canada, the reaction is really about disgracing the game/religion which dominates the fiber of Canada.
If you let this go, the NHL becomes just another "entertainment" choice.
    Not the case in Canada!
