Every fan base has its sore spots, whether they focus on lack of success or potential relocation or holding Stanley Cup celebrations in a parking lot. For the last several years, the most contentious topic you could raise with a Detroit Red Wings fan is the attendance problem at the Joe. It's an issue that's inspired both MSM investigation by publications like Sports Illustrated as well as soul-searching analysis by Red Wings fans in the blogosphere.

The issue is back on the front burner this morning thanks to Mitch Albom, author of overwrought best-sellers and a veteran columnist for the Detroit Free Press. Whether you approve or disapprove of him, he's still an influential and well-read voice. And he took aim at Red Wings fans and empty seats in today's column:

Before I spend one more word on how good our hockey team played Thursday night, I have to say how bad it looked to see so many empty seats at Joe Louis Arena. Cheaper seats. Expensive seats. Empty clusters. Half-empty rows.

Hey, this ain't Nashville, folks. This is Detroit, Hockeytown, where every seat should be filled, because these are the conference finals, the bridge to the championship, against Dallas, a team that hasn't been here for the playoffs in 10 years. That last time was a war that ultimately led to a Detroit Stanley Cup.

Remember the Cup? We loved that thing. We felt like we earned it -- every step. So what's the problem now? I know the economy is bad. I'm not telling people to hock the jewelry or find a job. But we're not talking 100,000 spots here, either. There are enough fans and money in our area to fill those absent clusters. Hey, if we can fill Lions seats, we can fill Red Wings seats.

"Bruise Days with Morrie!" "The Five Smack-Downs You Read in Heaven!" Albom goes on to write that you can't blame the team for the disinterest, although "the Hall of Fame roster has changed, the Canadian darlings are gone, the interviews are less exciting and more, well, Swedish." On this point, he's correct: Detroit is preposterously entertaining to watch, and now it has Swedish players nicknamed "The Mule" breaking scoring records.

The Freep is using the Albom column as to launch a larger discussion about empty seats at the Joe. Readers have been encouraged to sound off on the paper's official forum for Albom's columns, and they've started to do so with posts titled "Shut your pie hole Mitch!" and "Why is Mitch Special?"

Well yes, Mitch, you can blame the economy. Detroit is a blue collar town, with blue collar fans, who are losing their blue collar jobs. Tell "Miss Piggy" in Lansing to buy up those empty seats.

Whenever I read a story like this, I want this question answered: When was the last time Mitch Albom purchased a ticket to a live sporting event?

I use to go to Wings games all the time when I lived in the Detriot area. Now I am on the west side of the state, and I would love to go see the Wings dominate Dallas, but times are tough in Michigan. Once you pay for the seat, its going to cost me $60 in gas to get to the Joe, then parking, then beer....Lots and lots of beer. Now hold up, I am a kid that just graduated college, and have a minimal paying job, but you got to figure even people with money are thinking about this. If dueche bags would stop driving around their foriegn cars and buy American, times wouldn't be so tough in Hockeytown and those seats would be sold out. Anyhow, when Wings make the Stanley cup finals I will probably go if tickets are not sold out.

Mitch, we can't go to games if we don't have money! Unless you're gonna give those seats up for free then you'd fill the Joe.

As an out of state Wings fan I'd love to hit a wings game. But a ticket from Tampa to Detroit for 2 (I'm married), hotel, food and game costs would run me close to a grand for one game? The economy is terrible and it shows, how many games did the Joe sell out before bad times? Mitch, hook a brutha up with your baller status!

I would so love to be back home and at the Joe. Watching our guys again. The best tema ever!!! But i'm in Arizona. I can't though even afford tickets to the Coyotes games when Detroit is in town. Or any game for that matter. It's the duckets here, not the fan apathy.

I'd love to go to the Wings game.....but it's an hour and a half drive for me....the gas alone would cost an arm and a leg, not to mention parking, food, and tickets that cost anywhere between $79 to $215.....sorry I will be cheering from home.

I have never been to a Red Wings game, but would love to attend one, expecially the playoffs. Unfortunately, now that I have some time, the gas prices and other costs have me staying at home and watching this screwed up versus channel. Hey Mitch...send me a couple of good tickets and I'll buy the gas and fill an empty seat.

According to ESPN.com, the game was a sell out.

Look at the attendance (100% full). So the problem was somehow not that seats weren't being sold, but that people weren't even using them?

There's what you call a "disconnect" there in Mitch's words on this subject. It happens a lot with celebs, politicians and others who strive for and reach some kind of "special" status in life, then can't really relate to how "the other half" (or maybe 75%!) lives. Heart's in the right place, head's up his...

As an other out of state fan of the Red Wings I would find a way to get to the games if I was closer to the Detroit area. I am asking fans if you are really fans to go to games even if it is just 1 game.I live in Wyoming where we have just 1 4 year college and the average drive to a football game is 2-3 hours and if we can fill our stadium on a saterday with gas prices as they are Red Wings fans can suck it up and go to games even if it is just one game. The Wings are doing GREAT they deserve the support, GO WINGS

Move the team to the suburbs, who wants to go down there to Detroit. But what really shocks me is to see all those ex-Michiganders that had to leave Michigan because of the lack of employment. I'm down here with a decent job in Virginia because of the lack of opportunity, high taxes, poor state government in Michigan, I support the wing best I can and go to the games when I go up there when I visit. Prices of seats should be lowered and it rankles me that Mitch Albom (btw, never heard of him before this article "big fish, small pond"), who probably gets in for free, talking bad about the Wings fan base....

Quite a few of those empty seats are available out on the ticket services. So, it's not like they are not getting sold...they are just not getting re-sold.

$50 to $75 for standing room. I will sit at home and get replay.
Mitch let us get into reality. We have in the Metro area over 100,000 foreclousre. So so many out of work. You figure in the cost of a ticket, a cheap one. Parking, one hot dog. A hot dog for $3.00 at that, a 16oz coke $3.00 forget the beer I have to smuggle that in can't afford the cost at the game. And the cost of gas to get to and from the game. $10 to $20 depending on where you live. So for standing room I am paying about $130 to $150 for a game and I am still hungry.
And you wonder why people are not coming to the game. Hell $150 will feed a family for a week Maybe. So Priorities are having to be put in place here. Sit at home and get a dinner and replay and save the money to feed and cloth my kids.
Quit relying on the middle class to bail out the rich. Because this Govt of ours does not want a middle class. Look at the prices we are paying today. Today your either rich or poor. Might as well be in Mexico, at least there you can get a good bull fight for $20.00. You forced our hand so we are taking our stand. Lets see if those with money will step up to the plate and bail out their own. We are staying home with replay.

I love my Wings, but I had to leave Detroit because your lovely Canadian Governor taxed us to death and drove all real business out of Michigan. Keep voting for the Democrats (Like Mitch Albom), they will keep raising your taxes and send Michigan deeper into the toilet. On that note, I now live in a state that has a great economy and can afford tickets to see the Wings play again. Unfortunately, not at the Joe, but I will be up in Dallas on Wednesday, dressed in Red from head to toe, banners waving and shouting for victory! GO WINGS!!!

Don't put all the blame on Granholm, that crook Engler and the repugnicans brainiacs that had the legislature for many years before had the state in crapper before Jenny got her hands on the mess. If the repugnicans had done a better job, that dunce would have never got elected twice.

I think the real issues have already been said. The 'fans' losing their homes, or relocating to find work, or working the concessions at the game now to make ends meet have more important things to spend their money on than a high priced seat at the Joe. Sports teams like to use supply and demand to justify high ticket prices. Well, apparently demand is down, so adjust your prices. I wonder how many season tickets Mitch Albom holds? And his broadcasting peers? Oh that's right, he slides in FREE with his press pass. Here's another thought. Take those empty seats, donate them to youth groups, the top performing public High schools in Detroit, etc.
The only good thing about living in WI now, our governor is about 10 years behind on the same path MI starting on that killed it's economy 16 years ago, so I can still afford to catch the wings when they play Chicago (for now).
