"Mike Richards slashed Sidney Crosby three or four times, provoking the star center into a fight. Crosby made a feeble attempt to act tough, throwing a shot at Richards after the refs had bottled him up. And that's a lucky thing for Crosby, because there is absolutely no question he wanted no part of the Flyers captain-in-waiting. We've seen Richards fight, and he's pretty damn good at it. He pummeled Alexander Ovechkin during the duo's rookie campaign, and if not for the referees protecting Gary Bettman's Golden Boy, there's a more-than-great chance Richards would have beaten Crosby to a pulp." - Joe Boland, Philly Sportsline

So Crosby comes off as a puss, but what about Richards? I received an e-mail from a colleague this morning with the subject header "Is Mike Richards a bitch?" that urged me to check out his dance card from HockeyFights.com. The Philadelphia Flyers center has brawled with the likes of Sean Avery a few times, but he's also gotten into scraps with guys like Garnet Exelby and Brandon Dubinsky. He likes to get feisty, but he's not fighting out of his weight class. Then again, the Flyers aren't paying him for the next dozen years to be Bob Probert, so his career as a pugilist may be a bit immaterial.

The more specific question is whether his actions at the end of Game 4, with the Flyers clearly headed to victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins, could be considered "bitchly." In the slash-fest that followed their face-off, Richards was merely capping a night in which he frustrated Crosby. Tyler at NHL Digest thought that Richards forced Sid to lose focus throughout the game, which unfortunately triggered his whining reflex. The 4th Star thinks that Sid's complaining, and those ever-present accusations of chronic diving, all but justify Richards taking his shot at him.

I'm not sure Richards comes off all that classy by mixing it up like this after his team barely keeps its playoff heartbeat from flat-lining. But he does come off as savvy, forcing an opponent one win away from the Stanley Cup Finals to look nervous, defensive and agitated. It was a nice bit of playoff gamesmanship -- and let's all simultaneously scratch our heads as to why Coach Michel Therrien had "Crosby on the ice with 10 seconds left and 2 goals down."

    Hey Greg,
Thanks for the link-up to NHL Digest - Richards certainly did his job against Sid!
Look for more from Richards in Game #5 and we'll see if Crosby can get over himself and dominate the game like only he can.
    Peace -

Crosby gets no love. It would be different if he complained but then shied away from the spotlight, contact and danger. But he doesn't. He's far from a wimp, but he's also paid to, in his mind, carry a team and he takes that seriously - he'd rather be scoring goals. Richards is talented, yes, but the only way he can reach equal footing with Crosby is to rattle him with intimidation. Yes, that's part of hockey, but let's not get carried away here. Crosby talent is far above the likes of Richards and if they were both mute and fighting wasn't allow he couldn't carry Crosby's jock.

The only thing Crosby needs to get over is that awful smell of the dirty Philadelphia streets.
PENS win the cup this year, no doubt about it.
    Let's Go Pens!

I can't wait until after the Pens win game 5 and all the Philly fans suddenly disappear from these comments. Just like the Sens fans and just like the Rangers fans. Enjoy the last three days of your season Philly.

If Crosby is such a puss, then why does it take 3 Flyers to fight him? Richards is a coward.

Idiot move late in the game by and idiot player on an idiot team. The Flyers have been worthless since the Lindros days. They had the game in the end, so Richards wants to make a point, thinking it is going to carry over into game 5? Sid gets over it, scores two on Sunday, and leaves the Flyers wingless as the Pens go to the finals.

When was the last time Sid had a short-handed goal? When was the last time you even saw him do a good job back checking or even taking the body? Sid has ZERO short handed goals this year, and for all that talent he doesn't work nearly hard enough as other players such as Malkin and Mike Richards. I have respect for a lot of players on the Penguins, I underestimated the defense, and Malkin is great on both ends of the ice. But then again so is Richards. He's a player who actually had to earn what he has and wasn't given everything like the silver spoon in Crosby's mouth.

We certainly will enjoy the last of our season whether it be 3 days or 3 weeks! Last night we got to see the Flyers play like we know they can, and in forcing a game 5, not only gave us a good show, but gave our d-men Timonen & Coburn another chance to get valuable post-season experience - in games we were not supposed to get to much less win! Whenever our season end, I have enjoyed the ride so far, and will continue to do so. Then we will go on to enjoy the Cup Final no matter who is playing, as we enjoy good hockey, not just our team's play and bashing other fans. Just keep the great hockey coming, Flyers!!

    FlyerTears -
So you have no further points to make so you have to start making personal appearance remarks about people who don't agree with you? The Penguins must be proud to have such knowledgable and insightful fans.... Granted Kerry kinda started it, but there is a difference between a proven fact that some (and I said some) Penguins fans actually do sound a little on the mentally challenged side (proven by the various post regarding different topics - I've been on at least 10 topics, and wow), and guessing what someone may look like. If you are a teenager in an anger phase, I apologize - these type of comments are to be expected. If you are not in the midst of teen-age angst, shame on you. Let's maintain some intelligent discussions, please.

"[P]ummeled Alexander Ovechkin" is a bit of an overstatement - the HockeyFights vote on that one is 52.4% to 42.9% in Richards' favor - and "during the duo's rookie campaign" is just factually inaccurate - it was a preseason game prior to AO's and Richie's second season (2006). But hey, it sounds nice.
Btw, your colleague sounds like a douche.

How about Hatcher ripping Malone to pieces right before that. The refs had to pull in the mercy rule. Crosby looked a little puffy eyed in his post game, like he had just finished a good cry in his Russian lovers arms. And the refs were protecting Crosby, not holding him back...He doesn't have the stones to take on Richards.
Lastly, I think there are few Rhodes Scholars anywere near this discussion.
