(UPDATE: The Red Wings have been told there will be no suspension for Brown.)

The Detroit Red Wings' Western Conference semifinals series against the Anaheim Ducks got off to a rousing start Friday night, with a dramatic 3-2 win on a late goal by Captain Nicklas Lidstrom.

But the moment everyone's talking about from Game 1 occurred at 11:29 of the first period, as Ducks winger Mike Brown unleashed a vicious hit to the head of Detroit's Jiri Hudler and that left the Red Wing bleeding on the ice. Click the image for video of this controversial check.

Despite the gruesome scene, Hudler would later return to the game. Brown was given a major penalty for interference and a game misconduct. Detroit tied the game on the ensuing power play.

On the Versus network, analyst Keith Jones was as livid as we've seen him, comparing the hit to the one that got Donald Brashear of the Washington Capitals suspended for six games. He predicted Brown would face a suspension from the NHL, and that he had played his final game of the second round. Also outraged was Dana Wakiji of the Detroit News:

I swear, after the game if Mike Brown says he hit Jiri Hudler with his elbow because he's so much taller than Hudler, I may throw up on his feet. Since that was the lame excuse that Chris Pronger (boo) used when he hurt Tomas Holmstrom in the 2007 playoffs.

TSN analyst Bob McKenzie spelled out the arguments for the Wings and Ducks in a potential suspension hearing, before surmising that Brown may not face a suspension at all:

It's really up to the National Hockey League to decide what is it that they want to do. I think the NHL is going to look at it and say it's a five-minute major, it happened midway through the first period, Mike Brown is out of this game, there was no severe injury to Hudler other than the blood, he came back and he's playing, and the Ducks had to play with 11 forwards the rest of the game. There may not be a suspension in this case.

During these playoffs, the NHL has issued suspensions in various situations and not only in cases of actual injury. For Brown, the issue is intent to injure; the game misconduct would indicate the referee felt the hit entered into that territory. But watching the play in real time, it can also be seen as a hard open ice hit on a player who recently had the puck -- with some unfortunate aesthetic results.

It's not comparable to the Brashear incident, which was headhunting.  But one assumes that a hit that results in pools of blood on the ice, and one that is immediately labeled "barbaric" by the national TV announcing crew, will earn some kind of supplemental discipline. Right or wrong, the NHL can be swayed by such things.

If the Ducks were trying to come into Detroit and make a statement, that wasn't the way to go at it. Brown should get a 1 game suspension, but, I'll bet he'll be playing on Sunday.

looked like there was extra onto it to hit the face/head, and therefore that merits above and beyond just what he got on the ice.

I'm a Wings fan, and I don't think it's a suspension. I had the advantage of watching it several times in slow motion (which the refs obviously did not), and 1) it wasn't late, 2) it wasn't an elbow or a stick but a shoulder, and 3) the gaping hole in Hudlers' head is on the side where he hit the ice, not where the hit came from. It looked pretty bad, but I see no intent to injure, and no suspension is warranted. Keep your head up, Happy!
HOWEVER, folks like Anthrax should remember this post when they say stupid [profane]e like all Wings fans are whiners. Insults are the last refuge of the losers.

brown could have easily avoided huds. i mean these guys are pros right? they can turn and stop on a dime. the puck was 10ish feet past huds. brown couldve turned hard right and chased down the puck BUT he is a goon! like the stat i saw during the game brown/parros 42 fights the entire red wings team 11 in the regular season. honestly i dont care if he gets suspended or not! bottomline the wings won without their #2 dman and that has to make the ducks worry! i will say this i am somewhat disappointed tht the wings were engaging the goon tactics more then they should. pronger pulled a cindy like dive and franzens slash? huh? again is doesnt matter because the best team won and will win this series! i am even more confident now seeing them pull it off minus raffy!! watching ericsson knock perry around was nice too!! this series is going to be brutal!! the ducks came to play but so did the wings! the wings out hit, out face-offed, out shot and most importantly outscored the ducks!! yeah they arent physical AT ALL!!

I'm a Wings fan myself and I don't see there being a suspension. The hit was definitely late as the puck WAS long gone from Huds stick but Brown definitely didn't get his pronger... errr... I mean elbow up.
The ONLY thing that will bother me about there not being a suspension is that they'll suspend Lucic for a game for jabbing someone yet a late hit like this which was MUCH worse (obviously there was no injury in the Lucic case) won't get a punishment.
It's not so much that I'm annoyed with the suspensions... or lack thereof... it's just that I get annoyed with the consistency/inconsistency of the NHL and their 'regulations'.
In the end, the Ducks lost a penalty killing, face-off man and came out on top of game 1 so I'm happy thus far.
AND the Wings looked HORRIBLE the whole game. I expect them to step it up a few notches.
