Puck Daddy - NHL

You may have heard we're icing a team for the 2008-09 Hockey Blogger Invitational; which is put together by our esteemed friend James Mirtle, who is either painfully oblivious or keenly aware that we suck at fantasy hockey.

This isn't to say we haven't had success in the past -- the Elias Sports Bureau (pronounced "El-eee-ahsh") has been competitive in a D.C.-based Yahoo! league for years -- but rather that we're about as lucky as that guy who finally had a chance to draft Tom Brady in his football league this season.

The draft was held last week, and it was the first time we've ever taken part in an 18-team live draft before. It's pretty much like running a marathon, but without the eventual sense of exhaustive euphoria. The deeper the draft goes, the slimmer the pickins'. By the end of the thing, we were performing split-second Internet searches to make sure the player on our draft board wasn't in the KHL, crippled or dead. At one point the 20th round, the Puck Daddy team was deciding between Wendel Clark, Garth Snow and Paulina Gretzky.

The Forechecker published his team already. He's like the love child of Mel Kiper and Bill James on these fantasy leagues. Earl Sleek offered up both the Battle of California team and PJ from Sharkspage's squad. PJ drafted Steve Sullivan in the 20th round; too bad there wasn't a 21st  round so he could have drafted a male nurse to push Sully around in his wheelchair by midseason.

As you can see from the image above, we managed to draft a few decent forwards. Here's a look at the Puck Daddy fantasy hockey team:

Centers

Pavel Datsyuk (Detroit Red Wings, C, Round 1/Pick 11)
Daniel Briere (Philadelphia Flyers, C, Round 4/Pick 62)
Brandon Dubinsky (New York Rangers, C, Round 13/Pick 227)
Paul Gaustad (Buffalo Sabres, C, Round 15/Pick 263)
Travis Zajac (New Jersey Devils, C, Round 17/Pick 299)

The hope here is that Briere has a right wing option added by Yahoo!, because that would really help out the lineup. Gaustad is, of course, already injured. Zajac can still be a viable player if he earns his place in a Devils' lineup that's deeper offensively thanks to Brian Rolston. And sources say that Datsyuk may be playing with a pretty decent new winger this season.

Left Wingers

Patrik Elias (New Jersey Devils, LW, Round 6/Pick 98)
Milan Lucic (Boston Bruins, LW, Round 10/Pick 170)
David Perron (St. Louis Blues, LW, Round 12/Pick 206)
Fabian Brunnstrom (Dallas Stars, LW, Round 14/Pick 242)
RELEASED: Fredrik Modin (Columbus Blue Jackets, LW, Round 20/Pick 350)

Modin was our team's Mr. Irrelevant, but after having drafted just two goalies, he had to go. So basically this group is a total crap shoot, huh? Elias can be one of the best offensive players in hockey, or a middling snooze. Lucic has regressed in camp. Perron could be the next Brad Boyes or a slumping sophomore. Brunnstrom is, as we've written many times, the unicorn at the circus until proven otherwise.

Right Wings

Pierre-Marc Bouchard (Minnesota Wild, RW, Round 7/Pick 119)
Jere Lehtinen (Dallas Stars, RW, Round 11/Pick 191)
Scottie Upshall (Philadelphia Flyers, RW, Round 19/Pick 335)

The Bouchard pick is a good one, but you can see why Briere flipping to the wing would help our squad immeasurably. Pretty sure we didn't realize "RW" was an actual part of the lineup until the seventh round ...

Defense

Brian Campbell (Chicago Blackhawks, D, Round 3/Pick 47)
Ed Jovanovski (Phoenix Coyotes, D, Round 8/Pick 134)
Marek Zidlicky (Minnesota Wild, D, Round 9/Pick 155)
Derek Morris (Phoenix Coyotes,  D, Round 16/Pick 278)
Rostislav Klesla (Columbus Blue Jackets, D, Round 18/Pick 314)

Fairly happy with this group, outside of Morris, who we drafted with about two seconds on the clock after making an ill-timed beer run. Klesla could be a steal if the Jackets give him mondo power-play time. Jovanovski could be, what, about 90 percent of our PIM?

Goalies

Marc-Andre Fleury (Pittsburgh Penguins, G, Round 2/Pick 26)
Rick DiPietro (New York Islanders, G, Round 5/Pick 83)
ADDED: Johan Hedberg (Atlanta Thrashers, G, Free Agent)

There was a massive run on goalies; we took whatever was still available. At least neither of the starters is in a platoon this season. There's also zero chance either of them will start more than 70 games. Boo.

What do you think? OK, scratch that: How screwed are we?

Choosing defencemen that play for mostly non-playoff teams may hurt your +/- in a strong way, and I know a thing or two about that *cough* Joni Pitkanen's -25 in 06-07 *cough*.
And I think you may be missing one impact winger to have a strong fantasy year, but that is always easier said then done.

Tough to draft a solid team in an 18-owners draft. Likelihood is that you're roster is not as crappy as it looks. With 18 managers, everyone else probably doesn't look good either. I prefer 8-10 teams, 12 absolute max.

Hm, does somebody have less pull with adjusting the Yahoo! fantasy positions than we thought? Wyshynski, you stink (at abusing imagined Yahoo! priveleges)!

i agree that a good defenseman on a bad team can kill your /- and jovacop wont give you the pims this year imo.
upshall might help with the pims.
center looks solid. dubinsky is a great sleeper pick.
you wingers suck, but might get you enough points to justify filling the category.
you d in all look like a - team. not a good thing.
i'd be worried about secondary goaltending. ths islanders going to even win 25 games?
its ok, we all suck a fantasy hockey too.

Boy, Greg you're getting massacred in here. Tough crowd. Your team looks fine — maybe only middle of the pack due to goaltending, but we'll see.
I'll try and post my team later tonight. Two-time defending champ... ahem.

draft goalies first. 2 good goalies can make up to half of your points for the week.

Thanks for the Paulina Gretzky pics!
Considering the shoulder turn on the putt, she sucks at golf. She's either lagging a 75-footer or putting on gravel.
A 75-footer for eagle is ok, but it's not likely she's down in 2 on a par five after rolling a 3-wood from 230 yards out...

I'm more than willing to admit that my goalie drafting stunk this year. But you have to understand that there was an amazing run on goalies in an 18-team league. I looked up, and suddenly had douche chills about Curtis Sanford as my starting goalie.
Now if Kari would only hurry up and get hurt in Atlanta...

5 defense is a bad play. I don't even fill all 4 of my D slots sometimes, there is much more value in finding another winger to play on any given night. Or hording a goalie on the bench like Auld who will come in and take the Sens starting sport later on.

i can't judge your team cause a 18-team league is pretty deep ... its looks ok i guess. dipietro i think will surprise a lot of people on a crappy team. maybe if we get a list of other people's teams we can compare it.

I just have one question - why does anyone want to play in an 18 team fantasy league. Too many teams, not enough talent, no thank you!

yeah, the draft is pretty traumatic in general, but you can always clean that up the next couple days with trades. I started out ugly, but am pretty satisfied - http://hockey.fantasysports.yahoo.com/hockey/15426/8
I'm also gonna be watching that unicorn, esp. based on his pretty excellent pre-season. He probably won't be dressed most of the season though.

Its all about goaltending in fantasy hockey, 6 of the 12 categories are goaltenders only. Having 3 solid goaltenders gaurentees your team a chance to compete every week

Every year I'm in a 12 team 21 player roster and draft 3 goalies in the 1st 4 rounds. I have never come in less than 2nd. Goalies are KEY. 1 guy controls 4 stats. The Pens will drop off and DiPi well who is worse than the Islanders?
Don't worry about RWs I always draft them last. There are too many that may become great that you can get for free. Bernier, Setagoch, Eaves is buried look for him.
    Nice grab on Brunnstrom
I see your team in the bottom 3rd.

BTW just check out Forchecker's team and threw up a little. The man should have done better.
Is SOG counted? Useless stat. They should have "Shots Blocked" to combat it. It would also give D more value.
Talk to Yahoo I want Majors as a Stat next year. Just b/c Rob Blake is 80 and needs to take 11 obstruction penalities a game, should be a reason to draft him. (I do like Rob Blake but Hatcher isn't playing this year or I would have used him)

carcillo is an excellent source of pims as well a decent point getter and he would free up a D spot for a guy with a high +/-. re:#22 carlvshake, i like the idea of using blocked shots a WHOLE lot better than SOG. i think that deserves some consideration.
