Puck Daddy - NHL

We find it no coincidence that news leaked about Mats Sundin beginning a "rigorous period of training to continue his hockey career" on the same day a Swedish hockey game was delayed with a shower of sex toys. Who knew the fear of getting walloped by a projectile dildo was all we needed to get Mats back in the NHL?

The Globe & Mail broke the news early this morning that the 37-year-old former Toronto Maple Leafs captain is on the comeback trail. Again. Or for the first time. We've honestly lost count. From the Globe:

The 37-year-old free-agent centre underwent a physical exam at a Toronto hospital yesterday - necessary to begin a rigorous period of training to continue his hockey career.

Sundin, who spent the past 13 NHL seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, returned to the city last week and soon is expected to travel to Los Angeles to begin a two-week on-ice training stint.

It is believed that after those two weeks are up, he will begin talking to NHL teams to determine the best fit for him.

Globe writer Tim Wharnsby reminds us that Sundin's agent J.P. Barry "believes Sundin will play in 2008-09, but not likely return until December." That gives us, oh, about a week of sweet normalcy between Election Day and the formal start of the Sundin Derby. Cherish it.

The venerable Stan Fischler -- an enormous Puck Daddy fan, as you know -- quotes Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson as saying he believes Mats will return to the Toronto: "Mats has Maple Leafs tattooed all over his body." Wait, even down ... awkward.

Fan 590 radio host and ex-Leafs GM Gord Stellick disagrees: "I don't think the Toronto Maple Leafs want him. I think they've put Mats Sundin behind them and will be happy when he makes the choice to go somewhere else."

Vancouver Canucks GM Mike Gillis said he's made Barry "aware that we're still here and he knows how much interest we have." And Barry no doubt has made Gillis aware that he can still see that $20 million offer as clear as he can see the standings.

And then there are the Montreal Canadiens, Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers, all of whom were somehow connected to the Sundin Derby this summer.

Did the move for Robert Lang signal the end of the Habs' interest? Are the Flyers redeemable this season? Can the Rangers find the cap space? Do they even need Sundin anyway?

And while it's true the kid is struggling mightily, are we still honestly floating that meme about the "possibility of returning rookie Steven Stamkos to junior" to so the Tampa Bay Lightning can sign Sundin, Globe & Mail?

there should be a rule of no more sundin articles unless he says hes going to play and where hes going to play.
the leafs dont want him because he'll just trigger a hopeful run at the playoffs that will fall short and crush any chance of landnig tavares.

I disagree AWESOME. On my way to work this morning (shh im not a work now...wink wink) some news lady who can't pronounce any name remotely European (see CHERRY, Don) blabbed on about Sundin for 30sec after bemoaning her beloved Sens laying down to their old boss Jacques. So apparently this is the second most important thing that happened in FickleFan, Ontario.
In conclusion a #2 sports headline on an Ottawa radio station makes it Wysh worthy. I think.

Mats Sundin is like a desperate hollywood starlet, just when for, like, 5 minutes people had moved on with their lives, he has to go do something to get us talking about him again.

In fantasy terms when would you recommend picking him up? I think he's available in every league I'm in but center is pretty deep. I'm thinking of dropping a deadbeat d-man and stashing him on my bench...at least he wont hurt me in the +/- like said reargaurd.

We all know if healthy, he could be the key to a long playoff run, but like the rest of us, we really dont want to hear much more about this guy. I see enough of him at pokerstars. The Rangers waived Rismiller.. is this the first of a few moves to get him at MSG?

@ books, i feel that there are better players in the league that are playing now to sit on your bench. Im not picking him up unless I have an injured player or someone else really needs a center (trade). If Sundin is a point a game player after the new year and is better that your existing players then maybe bench him, but it sucks to waste a spot incase you have someone DTD and need the bench room. I personally would recommend carring an extra goalie than a center.

No doubt Canucks suck real bad, real smart owners over there, dumping Nonis???. When will people stop saying Roberto is one of or the best goalies in the league, he has been friggin' horrible, minus the first game, he's been carrying .871 Save percentage....yikes. It will be a long year in Vancouver :)

Wysh, please don't turn this into the TSN (Toronto Sports Network). I believe they re-named August 'Sundin Month' because of how much they talked about him. 'Sundin takes shower - could this mean return to the NHL?'
I agree with No1, I don't care until he signs on the dotted line somewhere. I don't care where anymore.

So basically it boils down to the older you get the less you have to play. At age 37 you are only required to play 1/2 the season and still get paid more than 80% of the players. If a guy cannot put in a full year why should a younger player suffer?

I immediately came to NHL on Yahoo after I saw that a team in one of my fantasy leagues had picked up Sundin. I knew you would have the scoop. One of your best, Wysh. You made my morning--I am still laughing.

mats deserves a legitimate shot at winning a cup, so he shouldn't play for the leafs.....however, he totally screwed us over by not getting traded and in all probability signing with another team....but if i had to deal with leaf management as long as he did i wouldn't feel too bad about it......

Perfect fit in Buffalo. Need a top notch center, have a playoff tested team, good defence, good goalie, and he can do it in the shadow of Toronto. Buffalo has a chance, Toronto has none, Canucks have none, Montreal doesn't really need him.....why in the world would you wnt to go to the Rangers???? Sabre would be a perfect fit, if only we were in the sweepstakes!!! heheheh
