Puck Daddy - NHL

"Poor Sidney Crosby - he goes on a Western (Canada) swing, and he's inundated with requests for interviews. It has to affect his ability and energy level, and I understand that. But we need to get our guys, their faces, their images, out there in the United States in ways we haven't done so previously." -- NHLPA executive director Paul Kelly to The Hockey News, Jan. 2008.

I have to admit that seeing the All-Star Weekend experience first-hand brainwashed me slightly modulated my feelings about the quasi-suspensions of Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom of the Detroit Red Wings for no-showing.

There's a difference between forcing guys to play while injured, which is absurd, and requiring their attendance at a major media event. Paul Kelly knew the importance of this earlier this month; maybe not so much now.

There were fans in Montreal from all over the world, and they spent a ton of money for the chance to experience the all-star game. There was media there from all over the world, and their companies spent a ton of money sending them to Montreal for interviews, columns and stories about the NHL's elite talents. There was money from sponsors, advertisers and the League itself promoting the players that were supposed to be there; that giant hotel lobby banner of Lidstrom didn't make itself.

It's all about the benjamins, baby, and the all-star game is one of the League's signature marketing moments. Bettman made that clear last February: unless you're incapacitated, you're showing up to glad-hand the millionaires and the CEOs and kiss some babies at the all-star game and its various supplementary functions. And if you don't, there are going to be consequences. So the rule didn't exactly "magically" appear.

Yet Red Wings fans waste their breath and tire out their fingers with rants of indignation, treating this incident as part of some grand conspiracy filled with anti-octopus twirling, Tomas Holmstrom's crease-crashing and all-star voter fraud. They do this even when the truth is so cut-and-dry: Datsyuk, Lidstrom and the Red Wings had an obligation to fill as League marketing partners; the players and their team chose not to fill it; and the Columbus Blue Jackets will face a shorthanded squad tomorrow night because of that decision.

Were the Red Wings made an example of by the NHL? Of course, and the decision to hold the players out of their next regular season game was likely also a poke at Kelly and the NHLPA to see if the League can take an inch or a mile in these kinds of situations.

But to say that Bettman and the NHL have "damaged the integrity of the game by doing something that could cost the Wings in the standings," as Jeff Blair did in the Globe & Mail? Please. Either Kelly's NHLPA is a willing partner in growing the game or they're not. Either Ken Holland and the League's general managers want to mandate participation in all-star festivities, or they want to appeal punishments that result in their abandonment.

No one was asking for Datsyuk to take part in a skills competition, or Lidstrom to skate the morning practice. All they had to do was show up and promote the game, like Sidney Crosby and every "healthy" player did. Treating that responsibility as an option rather than an obligatory part of the job is far more damaging to the game's integrity than two points won or lost for the Red Wings. It's the kind of passive commitment that has, for years, hindered the League's marketing aims.

As Brian Campbell said to me the other day: You have to hold the teams as accountable as the players when it comes to decisions to hold them back from promoting the game. That goes for something as significant as Lidstrom no-showing in Montreal to something as mundane as teams denying interview requests. Like Michael Farber of SI noted, Brian Rafalski, Marian Hossa and Henrik Zetterberg didn't exactly stand up to be counted after getting snubbed by the League. The Red Wings tested the bull and got the horns.

Try telling that to The Chief from Abel To Yzerman, who believes Detroit has every right to put its agenda ahead of the League's:

Here's what's been suggested and it's not a bad idea. Forfeit the frigging game. Forfeit it because it's unnecessarily unsafe.  This isn't a case of two forwards getting hurt in the midst of a game.  It's a situation where the league knowingly placed ten other skaters at jeopardy by keeping two players out of the lineup without any possibility of replacement.  Intent to injure.  Hell.  The Wings could legitimately sue the league.

Or how about this. This was suggested too.  Dress Lidstrom. Dress Datsyuk.  Or call up Leino and Haydar or Home Keys or Kindl. Call 'em up, dress 'em and skate them tomorrow night.  Even if it takes us over Gary's Cap.

In other words, tell Gary, the Wing haters, the elitist Canadien media to take this suspension and shove it right up their asses...if it's not too much trouble. And if whatever the Wings decide to do cost them two points, or a few million in fines, or their repuation in the eyes of the hypocritical league office?  Too bad.

Sure. Whatever. Fight the power. I just don't see the point in making this out to be a great injustice -- unless it was medically impossible for Lidstrom to travel with tendonitis in his right elbow, or to put his left arm around a fan to take a photograph in Montreal.

Was the NHL without fault here? Hell no. There is a double-standard at play when a guy like Steve Mason of the Blue Jackets can skirt his spokes-model duties because of injury without recourse, simply because he's in the skills competition instead of the main event. The notion that the Red Wings won't be able to replace these players because they're not officially suspended, as The Chief pointed out, is almost like punishment on top of punishment. And Lidstrom and Datsyuk aren't exactly Sean Avery; you could argue that the suspensions are harsh, and I'd listen.

But it still doesn't excuse their actions.

Let's revisit Paul Kelly's words from earlier this month: "We need to get our guys, their faces, their images, out there in the United States in ways we haven't done so previously."

Previously, players could duck out of their all-star game responsibilities for a myriad of reasons that didn't involve a wheelchair, a hospital bed or post-concussion syndrome. As any of those players will likely tell you in the wake of these suspensions: not any more.

It would be nice if the League and Butthead promoted more than Crosby. MLB and the NBA do not seem to have a hard time promoting International Players.
I'm sick of Bettman and his baby.

Never mind "in the wake of these suspensions", Lidstrom admitted beforehand to knowing the consequences of his actions and still chose to avoid the 75-minute flight. It's a shame that such a respectable man would show so little respect to the fans who flew in from Sweden, never mind the fans from Montreal. And to the fans in Columbus, I can imagine no greater nose-thumbing.
I'm glad you included that quote from Paul Kelly. I can now say authoritatively that NOBODY, other than the *ahem* level-headed (?) Ken Holland has not expressed concern over this selfish behaviour. Kudos to Derek Meech for making the oh-so-long trip.

This whole thing is stupid. Hopefully the jackets pull it out against them with or without the red wings premier players.

I'm pretty sure Holland was at that GM meeting last February. Maybe he should have spoken up before this week, huh? Commissioner's wishes or NHLPA's wishes? Wysh says potato, but Wings fans still say turnip.

Hmm, well do the players technically work for the NHL or for their respective teams? If they are NHL employees then sure they should have to be there. Also, didn't Malkin and others skip the awards ceremony a couple of years ago? That seems like a much bigger deal than skipping the All Star Weekend. Lidstrom and Datsuyk weren't even voted in as starters. It makes more sense that Crosby should be there since he was a starter.

I can't wait to see the shorthanded Wings team beat up on the Jackets. Then they'll bring back Lidstrom and Datsyuk (with a little more rest than they wanted) to start their march to the playoffs.

Whatever brings money into the NHL and keeps it up and running is not a "Joke" Cheashotx. The NHL needs the all-star game to be a sucess and so do the REAL FANS OF NHL HOCKEY. We need ideas to help bring revenue in during this economic crisis. I'm a bruins fan. If Tim Thomas or Marc Savard didn't show up just because they didn't want to and got suspended for it, I wouldn't be mad at the NHL, I'd be mad at the Players for their lack of support of the NHL.

I don't like the quasi-suspensions, but this was the chance for the NHL to promote players OTHER than Crosby, and the players bail. So all those who somehow blame Crosby for having his name pumped into our heads daily, now you can blame Datsyuk and Lidstrom.

lidstrom and datsyuk's suspensions are not deserved. yes, i agree that they could have shown up, like crosby, and met some fans, signed some autographs, talked about the game. the wings could have sent anyone to do that. i agree with you there. but lidstrom, a 6 time norris winner, who is 38 years old and served his time, and datsyuk, a 3 time lady byng winner and selke winner, didnt deserve a one game suspension. to me, it seems like the nhl wants to market some individual players (ie crosby, ovechkin, malkin) and some of the other young guys. detroit is a marketable team. besides the habs and the leafs, there are more wings fans in stadiums across the country than any other visiting team. lidstrom and datsyuk could have gone to montreal for the festivities and not played, but the suspensions were the wrong thing to do to punish them.

The NHL a stupid game, a stupid rule, and I applaud the Wings players for blowing it off entirely. The players are picked by a ballot stuffing process, not the best players in the league, etc. etc. It doesn't matter anyway, the Wings will beat COlumbus without Lidstrom, without Datsyuk, and with Chelios' left arm tied behind his back.....and these two stars will get one more day of rest to boot.....

You can talk all you want about sponsors and how their suits deserve to have a weekend with their "escorts."
Red Wings fans actually PAY for tickets. No fans = no league. No sponsors = lower-paid players but still a league.
The All-Star Game is an embarrasment. If you are over 12 and you think it's cool, you probably haven't kissed too many girls.

I absolutely ADORE hearing all the whining. Most Detroit fans are exposing themselves for the whiny, self-righteous pus bags they are, especially the hypocrites at A2Y. You're "Hockeytown", remember guys? You're the self-proclaimed "Center Of The Hockey Universe"! You're the "Defending Stanley Cup Champions"! You've put together a "DYNASTY" under which you've won two whole Stanley Cups in the past ten years! You have "history and tradition"!
And now, the league needs you and your players to stand up and be counted at their most important corporate schmoozing event of the year, and your players decided to stay home and sulk because they didn't get voted in as starters. Injuries, your ass. If Lidstrom and Datsyuk were too injured to fulfill their obligations to their employers, then they're too injured to play against the Blue Jackets tomorrow. And to respond to the Chief, go right ahead and circumvent your well-deserved suspensions...that should lead to not only a nice healthy fine from the league, but also another more lengthy suspension for the two players. Then, your little tiny pea brain will explode, and Wysh won't be tempted to place any more of your ill-conceived, disingenuous, hypocritical rants on this blog. I call that a win-win.

I don't like the All-Star game and I don't watch it. But it is a major marketing tool for the NHL. And since the NHL and the NHLPA are partners now I don't see how asking players to actually show up is that big of a hardship. The rule, although flawed, has been in place for a year. The team knew it and the players should have know it too, they have nobody to blame but themselves.

The real problem is that the all star game is pointless. There is no hitting, only one penalty called in the silly game since 2000 for crying out loud. The league needs to figure this out. How about a change like baseball , if you must play the silly game make it meaningful at least.
Or, better yet, take a week off in the middle of the season for the teams to mend, and have each team put on a fan appreciation weekend, let the fans come to the rink, mingle with the players, get autographs,; have a party!
Or have an all star game after the season is over pitting the NHL's best against Europe's best to see who hosts an international exhibition game the next year. Something! This format is just too stupid....

If I didn't show up to my company party for reasons as weak as Datsyuk and Lidstrom I would have been severely disciplined too. Just because it was a 'party' and it wasn't my usual work, doesn't mean my attendance had no effect on business. My attendance helped networking, customer relations and helped keep the good image of may company. Sure it was on a Thursday night and I probably MAY not have done that good of a job on Friday, but the benefits of the party far outweighted any sluggish day or week.
Just beause Datsyuk and Lidstrom make lots of money, or are entertainers or got raped in their previous two games does not mean they can just throw away their commitment to fans of the NHL.
I do agree that the people singled out are definitely examples that were chosen because of who they are, not neccesarily what they did, but the principle is the same. Their boss called upon them to advertise, and they said no without a valid reason. I have seen people fired for less.

if the NHL is so worried about promoting the game, then they should start by STOPPING their revamping of the interpretation of the rules just so they can profit from exploiting individual players that they feel are their ' superstars '. They've made poke-checking obsolete with the new ' hooking' interpretation, they inserted the interferance rule, however, guys that make a living in front of the net constantly get crosschecked to the ice from behind, slashed by the goalies, and down right mauled by opposing players out of frustration. But that is o.k. cause generally speaking, the guys in front of the net are not scoring superstars like Cindy Crosby, Ovechkin, and so on. Can Bettman promote Holmstrom like he can Crosby, HELL NO !!! When the referees quit looking the other way on blatant penalties, when they make it a real all-star game instead of a fan-favorite (or big-market favorite) game, then maybe they'll be heading in the right direction....but what do I know, I'm just a fan, not the Commish....

I'd rather see these guys stay home, get treatment, and heal, rather than have to fly half way across the continent just in case they might say something interesting at a press conference. Was there anyone at, or watching, the press conferences that has sworn off the NHL because Lidstrom or Datsyuk skipped? I can see how some players might get a kick out of participating, but for a fan like me, it just means a week with no hockey. If i were the wings, I'd take my wrath out on the Blue Jackets. (Sorry Columbus fans.) That'll shut Bettman up.
