The Stanley Cup finals begin on Saturday night, but the Marian Hossa(notes) Saga is already the leading angle for the media. Which is understandable when you think about the major dramatic themes (Betrayal! Comeuppance!) at play and the fact that we're going to have a clear cut winner and loser in his decision to leave the Pittsburgh Penguins for the Detroit Red Wings.

From Helene St. James of the Freep:

"It's a unique situation right now, definitely this doesn't happen often," Hossa said. "I try to make the best of the situation for myself and try to help the team win a Cup. Last year I lost it so this is another chance. It's going to be hard but it's a good chance. ... I have to make this not too big a distraction. I just have to use it as an advantage."

As Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! sees it:

Now comes the series of reckoning. Hossa gambled correctly on Detroit, he's back in the Finals, the favored team for the Cup. But waiting is the scorned lover.

"Ironic," he repeated over and over, a big pack of television cameras surrounding him. He kept looking around, unsure of what to say until one of the Red Wings' public relations people ushered him off. There was nothing to say. The talking is over. Marian Hossa has to show it now.

As for Penguins fans, there are a couple of different mindsets.

The Pittsburgh Channel has a story today that chronicled the fans' bitterness for Hossa's decision, including this inventive T-shirt. From the Pittsburgh Channel, a taste of the bitter:

"He came here, we took him in, fell in love with him, made songs for him, cheered for him," said Pens fan John McClelland, of Squirrel Hill. "Said he wanted a big deal. We offered it to him, then he goes to them for a one-year deal."

But The Pensblog, those merry pranksters and Penguins fan trendsetters, see things a bit differently:

We're are pulling the Don't Boo Hossa train out of the station. If he had signed with Pittsburgh, the Pens wouldn't be here right now. And the Pens' salary-cap outlook would look like Hiroshima. And that's all we're gonna talk about Hossa. Nobody really cares anymore.

The reaction from Penguins fans will be interesting at Mellon, but not as interesting as the reaction from Hossa on the ice in this series. His postseason thus far as had some star moments, but they've been fleeting.

His pride, his instincts and a Stanley Cup are on the line. It's great theater.

What do you expect out of Hossa in this series, and will his decision be validated or vilified?

He'll score two goals in Game four, per trend, and do nothing else.

Hossa is a Red Wing........he is part of an undeniably talented team. If Detroit can bottle up Crosby, Malkin, and Guerin, what other offense is there? Red Wings will have 4 lines coming at the Pens. Detroit is too deep for Pittsburgh to stop them. Hossa will raise the cup..........B2B CUPS......HEY,HEY, HOCKEYTOWN!!!!! GO REDWINGS!!!!!!!

Hossa shouldnt be what we concern ourselves with. The pens need to focus on stopping the freak that is Franzen. I mean this guy passes between three defenders on the ice. Franzen is just sick. We need to put him on his back side and show him whose boss. Franzen is the key to stopping the Wings. Holstrom needs to be our a main focus too. He stood around waiting for a train while parking his butt in front of our net. Orpik needs to be physical with him from the get go. Maybe even drawing a fight with him just to let him know whose here isnt such a bad idea.
LETS GO PENS!!! THIS IS FOR JOHN CHALLIS!!!! ITS WHAT HED WANT! THIS ONE IS FOR JOHN!

hossa really produced for the pens last year, and the team would not be the same today if he had stayed. i hope the booing at Mellon is limited and he's treated like any other visiting player.

I think some of the more militant Pens fans really need to let go. Serious. He was a trade deadline acquisition, and played sparingly due to, what I remember was an ankle injury, then played really good after that in the playoffs, the end. And if Hoss had stayed with the Pens, they might not be the same team they are right now with the added depth of Guerin and Kunitz.
I think if the Wings are healthy, they will beat the Pens. Wings are too deep, and I dont think the Pens have played against a team of this caliber in these playoffs.

Wings fans, just because you've called up the top two lines from the Grand Rapids Griffins to replace all of the players who've died of old age doesn't meant you're rolling four solid lines.

Hossa is an elite level winger-certainly better than anyone else on Pittsburgh not named Sid or Gino. I can understand the fans felling scorned, but he was traded to Pitt; not like he asked to go there then decided the hell with 'em. He'll show up big time -he's got to.

I'm a Pens fan, and I don't plan on booing Hossa. Not that I'll be at any games or anything, but if I were, I wouldn't boo him. Just like I would never boo Jagr, even though what he "did" was way "worse." These guys are professional athletes. In Hossa's case, he was traded here, maybe not against his will, but not of his own accord. If he wants to go play in Detroit, that's his prerogative. I won't deny that I was disappointed, but the Pens are better off cap-wise without him. He probably could have went about leaving in a better way though, i.e. not stringing Shero along or whatever. I still respect him, both as a player and a person though. That being said, for the sake of my Pens homerism, I hope the Pens win in 4 and Hossa is held without a point, or maybe makes some sort of blunder that costs the Wings the Cup. (Not that those things are likely to happen at all.)
As I said, I'm a Pens fan, but it's silly to think the Wings aren't the better team. On paper anyway. Talent-wise, they're clearly the better, deeper team. (Except in goal and maybe their bottom pairing defensemen.) That doesn't mean the Pens don't have a good chance though. They're hungry, and more experienced, and maybe a little grittier than last year.
    Here's to a memorable series. :-)

Whatever. I'll boo him as if he's another player playing against Pittsburgh. It won't be touch-the-puck booing, but if he scores, it might be a little louder. After all, it is the Stanley Cup Final.
Did he job the Pens in free agency? Yes 5 years, 7 years, oops I found a 1 year deal that will give me the best chance at the Cup. I'm sure if he would have said after the Cup Finals that there were no intentions of coming back, this situation might be slightly different. With that being said though, I am past it. I look at it this way: without MaryAnne Hossa on the team, the Pens were able to lock up several parts of The Core© (Orpik, Fleury, Malkin) at the beginning of the season. Orpik has been excellent in his own end and has even reached a career high in points (19, compared to a previous high of 11), Fleury put up a 35 win season and helped the Pens get to the Finals, and I believe Malkin's Art Ross trophy speaks for what he has done this year.

Hossa is one of the biggest talents in the league, the series should be entertaining. I have loved Hossa since he played in Ottawa and Gretzky called him one of the best players this league has seen. So open the gates, this stuff's gonna be tight y'all.
