(NOTE: Don't forget about Puck Daddy's 2009 Free Agent Frenzy Chatter Box)

Brian Burke and the Toronto Maple Leafs finally made their move, and it was a huge one.

The Leafs snag the best defensive defenseman on the market in Mike Komisarek(notes) from the Montreal Canadiens. He gets five years and $22.5 million, for a $4.5 million average cap hit.

Toronto set itself up by earlier sending defenseman Pavel Kubina(notes) to the Atlanta Thrashers. The Leafs get Colin Stuart(notes) and defenseman Garnet Exelby(notes) from the Thrash; Atlanta grabs the rights to forward Tim Stapleton(notes), an RFA. That opened up a bit of cap space for Burke; it also made Kubina look like a big dummy for that no-trade clause malarkey last year.

Is Komisarek a significant upgrade over Kubina? Can he be counted on as a cornerstone in a rebuilding process? It remains to be seen. One question we can answer: Can Leafs/Boston Bruins games get anymore interesting? Hell yes.

What a wonderful bit of escalation in the Habs/Leafs war. Montreal throwing around money like they're M.C. Hammer and undersized centers are their posse. The Leafs signing away arguably their biggest name free agent, after the Habs may have outbid Toronto for another vital unrestricted free agent in Michael Cammalleri(notes).

Cammalleri had been linked to the Leafs for months. If you polled the hockey smarties before Free Agent Frenzy day, his signing with Toronto would have been one of the most expected moves of the day. (Polar opposite: Brashear to the Rangers.) Yet here is Cammalleri, the newest member of the Montreal Canadiens at five years, $30 million.

Montreal Canadiens GM Bob Gainey said he coveted a big center. Guess stacking Cammalleri and Scott Gomez(notes) qualifies, right?

Cammalleri is an interesting player in the sense that he can player wing or center -- so either Gomez's partner in crime or his No. 2 -- and he's also a proven power-play specialist. His new cap hit ($6 million) is much higher than his previous hit ($3.350 million) for the Calgary Flames. That's not the concern, through; the Habs have a ton of space to work with. The concern is that he's a player who needs to play with talent that makes him better, rather than the other way around.

Still, it's an impressive coup for Gainey, considering the alleged competition for his services.

Finally, TSN reports two Nashville Predators moves: Vernon Fiddler(notes) goes to the Phoenix Coyotes for $2.2 million and two years. Greg Zanon(notes) goes to the Minnesota Wild for three years and $5.2 million.

When I see this, I get p'd at Lou. No doubt we could have landed Komisarek for the same money and we would be a better team. Plus, NJ has a better chance in the playoffs with Komisarek because we'd have better skill up front and pretty good depth in Mottau, Leach and Greene. Not sure what Lou's waiting for, but we need a #2 centerman and some offensive and/or defensive defensemen.

Cammalleri's new cap hit is 6 mil, not 5 mil. Also, "any more"—in the context of how much more exciting Leafs/Bruins games can get—is two words, not one.

Glad to see Komisarek can still get his face punched in by Lucic 6 times a season, or is it still 8 divisional games? Habs will be no better if not worse, they still have questionable goaltending and the worst fans in hockey. Last place fits the Toilet Seats nicely.

Well we all were waiting for Burke to do SOMETHING, but I wonder what uncle Bob has planned next? Maybe pick up Zubov to run their power play? Hate to see Dallas' new GM let him go but he's done dumber things this off-season already.

5, Plenty of FA's still to be had! Brendan Morrison is still available ;) You never know, I guess you can consider him a #2 center and the nostalgia will be revived once again.

I'm really disappointed in the Kubina trade. I mean I'm happy to see Kubina go, don't get me wrong.
I was just hoping for Boris "Natasha" Valabik in exchange. He's big brutal and slow in the Burke mold and would give Leafs fans one more reason to boo Sid the Squid. Maybe this year, in a quid pro quo, he could bash Crosb with his bum. Oh well.

Good move by Burke, but still doesn't smack of his usual "big one". Komisarek will help, and maybe the *new* Brian Burke will have to settle for a series of smaller moves....nah. Something's still up his sleeve, methinks.

This is great for Komisarek...he gets to play in another hockey hotbed, only one that doesn't have any expectation!

Do you realize how many first and second rounders the Habs are losing latley, either in picks sent away, or drafted players they let go...Gainey seems to be telling our scouting guru Trevor Timmons.."Your picks suck and I am getting rid of them all"...Bob..Who hired Timmons...

Burke is still pissed off about the draft, and overpaid for Komisarek just to spite Garth Snow after Snow blew him off regarding Tavares. Burke is the same blowhard that took Kadri just to spite Ottawa.

LOL Way to go Rangers! Get rid of Gomez's salary and take on Gaborik's for $7.5 million! Way for Sather to not let his fans down! At least Gomez was healthy 99% of his stint with the Rangers. I feel bad for NY when they play the Flyers.

I believe there's a typo in that article, the words "best defensive defenseman" and "Mike Komisarek" appear in the same sentence.

@15 - habs1rule you sound like an idiot as usual. Komisarek was drafted in 2001. Timmins and Gainey joined the Habs in 2003. You need to back your emotions with facts once in a while. Besides, 1st and 2nd round draft picks are almost always disappointing. At best they live up to their overly optimistic expectations. Look at any team's drafting record and you will see lots of busts or players who were dealt for a different piece of the puzzle. The true value of a good scouting staff comes from picking up guys like Andrei Markov in the 6th round.

@21 - I believe the full comment was "best defensive defenceman ON THE MARKET." (emphasis added)
Komisarek never really lived up to expectations. It is still early enough in his career for him to get better, but I think skating with Markov made him better than he really is. Then again, an arthritic chihuahua could skate circles around Hal Gill, so we could be in big trouble.
Whatever happened to the good old days when the Habs could pull off great trades like sending John Kordic to the Maple Laughs for Russ Courtnall...

As a Nashville fan, I hate to see Greg Zanon go. He was our goalie's best friend with all the shots he consistently blocks. That guy has to be a human bruise after each season. Go Preds... trade for some offense will ya!

Hey Idiot Rock...Tanguay and Lang arent signing with Montreal as per Gainey tonight, so we gave up a First and Second rounder for a one year rental..That Hurts any team...We lost Higgins and McDonagh, bith first rounders in the retarded Scott Gomez trade...That sucks...You are why the idiots that run this team are still here...What kind ofteams eliminated Montreal from the playoffs two tears in a row..Big teams...Like Boston and Philly...Guess what Gainey did..The impossible..He made our foward lines even smaller...Maybe you can identify with "Smaller things"..
