PITTSBURGH For hockey fans, it's a constant tug-of-war between part of the puckhead brain: the part that yearns for each and every penalty to be called out of competitive fairness, and the part that wants a light touch from the referees in the spirit of "let them play."

As a member of the "Grind Line," you can imagine which part of Kirk Maltby's(notes) brain dominates this debate. Within the first 10 minutes of a game, the Detroit Red Wings winger knows what the players can and can't get away when it comes to the officiating; and the veteran's been a happy agitator with the laissez-faire refereeing he's seen in the first two games of the Stanley Cup Finals.

"I love it. I'm not sure how the East was really called all playoffs, but I think the way they're calling things now should be a blueprint for how the regular season should go," said Maltby.

"They're not going back to the old rules, where there's the dramatic hooks and holds and slingshots coming up the ice. I think they're letting guys battle, in the corners and in front of the net. As players and as hockey fans, all you ask is that it's even on both sides. I'm not really used to this many penalties not being called, but it's fun. You're letting the guys go out and play and decide who's going to win."

The officiating was a topic of conversation for both teams heading into tonight's Game 3. The Wings lead the number of power plays in the Finals, 4-3.

Pittsburgh Penguins coach Dan Bylsma was asked if the "standard of officiating" has changed from the regular season.

"I think the standard that's been called in the game has been fair. I mean, [are] there penalties on each side? As a coach, you can go through the game and say that was a penalty, that's wasn't a penalty. But if you're honest, you can usually say that about both sides," he said. "I think the standard on the ice has been pretty consistent for both teams."

Babcock disagreed with the idea that the standards for officials have changed.

"I think there were so many penalties in previous rounds, they only called part of them anyway," he said. "I don't think that's been an issue, whatsoever."

As for Game 3, Maltby said he isn't concerned that this "free ride" from the officials is about to end.

"You'd like to think not. We'll see how the first period goes. Obviously, if they're starting to call a little bit more, it's up to us to adjust to it," he said. "Whatever they end up calling tonight, from the get-go, as long as they're calling it both ways."

On the news front, it's looking good for Kris Draper(notes) to return to the lineup if Mikael Samuelsson(notes) can't go. And all signs point to Pavel Datsyuk(notes) missing tonight's game, though nothing was officially announced.

So the Wings are coming out and saying that they know things aren't being called, and their taking advantage of it. Super.

i have been a follower of the red wings since about 95 and nothing got me more excited than to see the "grind line" out on the ice causing havoc in the last 90s...the red wings are built around class and sportsmanship and something like missed calls or calls not being made are not going to change the way they play the game at all...this series with be over with by the time they return to the Joe for game 5

Yeah, a Blueprint to make the NHL how boring it was pre lockout. That's what we want! Hockey back to the time when ESPN said goodbye!

no, i think both teams agree this is hocky not soccer and a little more physical play is ok when a big game like this is on the line. its not an advantage when both teams do it. dont be a wuss, baseball has started so if you need a softer sport feel free to change the channel. Joe Morgan would be glad to have to you join him.

This article will certainly inspire some more whining from Pens fans. Notice that your coach doesn't seem to think that the officiating has been biased.

Tim K, If you read it all, its clear that the message is that things go both ways and thats just the way the game is played. Kudos to Bylsma for making that point. Much better than Michelle last year when he'd hold pressers just to bit ch and moan.

When you have "grind line" guys "loving it", I think that says something about the state of the game.

@9 That's because we have a better person at the helm than John Stevens or Boohoodreau. Bylsma is a class act, which is why the interim tag was lifted.
There are a lot of missed calls, both ways, sure. But Pens fans are more upset about Zetterberg helping out Osgood than the cornucopia of borderline obstruction by the Wings.
There's a difference between "physical play" and osbstruction.

I think it has been pretty consistent for both teams so far. Definitely not consistent between playoff rounds or matchups, but what can you do.
    Everyone please note:
There refers to a location - "The puck is over there"
They're is an abbreviation for they are - "The two wingers skated into the corner and they're now fighting for the puck"
Their is a possessive pronoun relating to the word 'they' - The Penguins players must get their acts together or this series will be over soon"
It's really brutal to read when people screw these things up.

-1 Tim. Funny that the Wings coachs' quote is the one you chose to hear. Bylsma gets it -you should too. But it is a handy execuse for a team that was all but given the Cup by the media et all...

yeah, the playoffs and hockey in general is basically all about who can cheat the most and get away with it. if we made the nets bigger then no amount of cheating would make a difference and teams would only concentrate on scoring. right now, each goal is worth so much that teams will do anything to stop just one from going in. if the game was determined by offense instead of interference and goalies with huge pads then everything else would fall by the wayside, goals would be "cheap" and it would be more exciting to watch.

The officiating has been different (awful) this round for both teams. It appears that the Wings get away with more interference type plays. While the Pens get away with more stick penalties, slash/hook/trip. As a Pens fan, I would say that there has been a lack of calls evenly for both teams, but I will say this: the interference type infractions affect the Pens style of play more. That's why it appears the Pens aren't getting the calls. I don't mind the apparent change, and it is consistent between the teams. It's the inconsistency between rounds that is troublesome.

I'd like to propose a treaty. All pens fans have to shut the helI up about Zetterberg in the crease and Wings fans will drop anything about a Geno suspension. Whether you think they were legal or not, you can't possibly think that Zetterberg's actions in the crease were the sole reason the Wings won. Game Three's tonight, lets enjoy some hockey and shut the helI up about the refs.

rvh - true, the wings gave been interfering but no team can tick-tac-toe better than the wings. if they play boring hockey it's because that's the way they're forced to play not the way they want to.

The standard of officiating shouldn't change when you reach the SCF. Obviously the officiating has changed, and the Red Wings are taking advantage of it. The Penguins need to adjust and learn how to throw "subtle interferences" and picks throughout the offensive zone and we'll win.

Misleading to say the Wings have more power plays. It's essentially 3 apiece. The fourth one for the Wings was the irrelevant 18 seconds of 5-on-3 after Malkin went batcakes on Z.
