The Vancouver Province reported this afternoon that Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo(notes) is injured: "How badly is unknown and how many games the Vancouver Canucks starting goaltender may miss is also open to speculation."

The Vancouver Sun was happy to speculate openly, while reporting that Luongo is "out indefinitely" after last night's loss to the Detroit Red Wings:

Bertuzzi was knocked into Luongo by Canuck defenceman Alex Edler. The impact appeared to jar Luongo's shoulder and arm.

What happened since the initial news moved speaks to how all-encompassing hockey culture has become: We've been bombarded with messages from concerned Canucks fans, concerned Team Canada Olympic fans, concerned fantasy owners who drafted Luongo first in their leagues and, of course, fans from the other 14 teams in the Western Conference havin' a laugh right about now.

The only people who haven't checked in about the injury are members of backup goalie Andrew Raycroft's(notes) family, no doubt because champagne corks can be tricky sometimes.

Later, TSN clarified the injury, which is less ominous than inferred:

The Vancouver Canucks may have dodged a bullet as the team learned Wednesday that netminder Roberto Luongo is only expected to miss about a week's worth of action after suffering a hairline fracture in his ribs.

Luongo originally suffered the injury during this past Saturday's victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs where the Montreal native made 35 saves.  He appeared to aggravate the injury in Tuesday's loss to the Red Wings during a second period collision with Todd Bertuzzi(notes).

A week? And ... exhale. But in case this happens again, know this: As a Devils fan who watched another all-world goalie go down with a significant injury last season, please keep in mind that Scott Clememsens do happen.

But our Stanley Cup bet is looking better by the day, no?

TEAM 1040 in Vancouver just said that it's apparently a "hairline rib fracture" suffered on Saturday vs the Leafs. No timetable for a return, but they are speculating 2-3 weeks.

This is just wonderful. My second draft pick because I wanted goalie stability, and probably a seperated shoulder and out for two months type thing. Bright side to this story? Time to take this lemon and make some lemonade. Raycroft, here I come!

Hangnail, gotta be. maybe he split a toenail. He's a hockey player, AND a goalie, they're like, invincible no?
well, hope he's back sooner rather than later, hate to see a good player out for too long, no matter the team.

I have an inside source who said Luongo is out three to four months with broken ribs, he's going to get surgery on Friday.

@Andrew.... when is the last time you heard of someone missing 3-4 months with broken bones? I tend to doubt this "source"...

Actually the last time I heard it happening was last year when Torrey Mitchell missed even more time than that when he broke his ankle, and the year before when Kurtis Foster broke his femur and took several months to recover. So this is actually a legitimate time frame, especially for a franchise goaltender whose career you don't want to jeopardize by having him return too quickly.

I appreciate the updates Andrew, but an ankle and femur are a lot more serious because they are weight bearing bones. Take into consideration he had already played 2.5 games with this fracture... here's hoping he's back soon!

@ Andrew : That does sound odd. If the rib fractures were that severe he would have been on the ice writhing in unbearable pain. If it's just a cracked rib, why does he need three to four months? I've cracked ribs playing hockey, it hurts ALOT but I only missed a month...

That's exactly why I drafted him...sometimes my fantasy curse comes in handy. Maybe I'll trade for Anderson to end his streak as well.

GOOD NEWS: now the TEAM 1040 is saying Luongo is only expected to miss about a week.... and apparently the injury which happened in the Toronto game was re-aggravated in the 1st period vs the Wings. Bertuzzi, you're lucky...

@ Andrew: Only way someone gets surgery for cracked ribs is if they saw Dr. Nick Riviera.

Just goes to show ya, when you push a big guy that's standing right in front of your goaltender... bad things may happen... Edler's an idiot, as is anyone blaming Bertuzzi.

Was Luongo injured before or after the 3rd period of the Red Wings game!? Guy was on fire first two periods and sucked eggs in the 3rd. Had he been beaten by Andy Delmore for the game winner I would have understood, but Jason Williams? Yikes. Maybe he needs a rest anyway.
