After the ominous buildup to Boston Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli's media meeting this morning regarding Milan Lucic's(notes) injury, the news that it's a high ankle sprain brings the threat level down a few notches.

Despite having not played "Operation" in several years, we can tell you there's a world of difference between the ankle and the knee. (No word if he actually had butterflies in his stomach as well.) From the Boston Globe:

Lucic injured his left ankle Wednesday night in St. Paul, Minn., late in Boston's 2-1 win over the Wild, as he reached to gather in a pass from defenseman Dennis Wideman(notes). As he reached back, Lucic's left leg buckled from under him, sending him hobbling back to the Boston bench and then to the dressing room.

Speculation ran rampant after the game that Lucic suffered a knee injury and could be lost to the lineup for a much longer period of time. Chiarelli noted that the estimate of a one-month absence comes with some guess work. Lucic, he said, could be back earlier or later

Since signing his three-year, $12.25 million extension with the Boston Bruins at the beginning of October, Lucic has missed more games than he's played. He has 5 points in 10 games, and the Bruins were 7-3 with him in the lineup; without him (and center Marc Savard(notes)), it was panic time. Getting him back for only four games before this injury was a bitter tease for B's fans.

So his value to the Bruins can't be questioned, right? Well, the reaction to the injury news was interesting to that end, as hockey folks like Illegal Curve wondered if investing in Lucic (and over Phil Kessel(notes)) was a wise decision.

The deck's already stacked against Looch, because the "can he live up to the contract?" questions were flying around as soon as his pen hit the dotted line on that extension. Now along with whether his game is worth $4 million a season, there's the issue of Lucic's durability on top of it.

It all speaks to what's going to be an inevitable question in hockey circles: Is Milan Lucic overrated? We'd say "no," especially when these verdicts are being passed before his new deal even kicks in.

Unfortunately for him, there are now other questions, too: Can 10 games this season earn him an Olympic roster spot for Canada? And are hockey fans going to be deprived of Lucic vs. the Flyers in Fenway if this ankle injury goes longer than expected?

I'm glad someone finally said that lucic isn't overrated. It's mind boggling to me that anyone would question signing Lucic over Kessel. Luccic brings toughness and offensive skills that are inproving every year. the only thing kessel brings is goals. I don't think Kessels 60 points a season is worth the 6 million a season he was asking for. good luck to Phil I hope he has a good career but seriously he will never be a 50 goal 100 point guy where Lucic strikes fear into the hearts of other teams

There's no way he makes the Olympic team.

Lucic isn't worth the money they signed him for, but he can play on my team any day. I hate how he runs from people who could actually challenge him inn a fight, and picks on smaller and less-fisticuffs skilled opponents, but he is a monster, has good hands and good hockey sense, and has grit and toughness.
I don't know if he was worth more than Kessel - but he brings an aspect Boston doesn't have in spades right now (the physicality and toughness). But for Toronto, Kessel would be more valued than Lucic on Toronto, cause they have grit and nasty in spades, but need his scoring more than they'd need Looch's sandpaper.

Lucic is too slow for the Olympics. He is great for the NHL, the grinding/checking, the small ice surface, but its a different game on the international stage, bigger ice surface, faster play/players. Same reason why Chara is miserable on the international stage. So even if he played more games, he shouldn't be called up for Team Canada IMO.

actually I take my comment back, they will be using North American ice surface at the 2010 Olympics....so Lucic could be a good asset actually. The few games he did play this year, he has been a good asset for the Bruins.

In what bizarro world are you living in? Lucic playing for the Canadian Olympic team? Maybe if Canada wasn't stacked with a ton of, you know, GOOD players.

My opinion on the Bruins signing Lucic over Kessel hasn't changed since that decision was made and has nothing to do with Lucic's injury record so far this year. Kessel is one of the few pure goal scorers in the league, a guy who can create goals out of nothing, has boatloads of skill and is very exciting to watch.
Lucic is a great hitter and a great fighter, but he really isn't that great of a hockey player overall and is beyond overrated. Less than 20 goals playing with Savard and Kessel last year? Please. Most checkers would get more in that spot.
To me the decision to pick Lucic over Kessel was and always will be completely retarded and has more to do with Lucic's status as a god among Bruins fans who appreciate physical game a lot more than skill. When this decision was made I said, "Good luck scoring goals, Bruins" and I have been right on the money with that so far.
You simply DO NOT trade a 21-year old of Kessel's ability. He will have multiple 50-goal seasons and those guys are very hard to find. I love that when Mike Millbury brings this up during Bruins' telecasts Jack Edwards always looks like his head is about to explode. Because that homer knows it's true.

Watch how the Bruins play drastically changed in the games he returned after the finger injury. He opens so much space, and a lot of his intangibles won't make it on the score sheet. Plus, he managed to net 2 goals in those couple of games, as well.

    @ reejecoap
The only thing Kessel brings is goals? Your mindset is amazing to me. Goals are the hardest thing to get in hockey and it's what wins games. The last time I checked the team that scores more GOALS wins the game, not the one that hits more or kicks someone's butt in a fight. Kessel scares the crap out of opposing defenses and is far more valuable than Lucic. Players like Lucic are a dime a dozen. Players like Kessel are very rare. You must be one of those retarded Bruins fans who don't give a crap about guys like Savard and Kessel and would like their team to be made up for 20 Lucics, then wonder where the goals and wins went when the skilled players aren't there.

$4 mil for a guy that can get 60 points a yr, fight, hit, goes in front of the net and into the courners.
this is overpaid and over rated... how?
i'll take 3 lines of lucic's anyday of the week, twice on saturdays. My god, if my Leafs had a Lucic, they'd never lose another game! hahaha. jj, but seriously, we need a Lucic

Holy Crap, when will people realize that these players (Lucic, Krejci, ect) weren't chosen OVER Kessel?! Kessel wanted out of Boston, end of story. It didn't matter how much the Bruins offered him, he didn't want to play in Boston.
Why do you think Toronto overpaid with two 1st round picks and a 2nd instead of simply singing him to an offer sheet and only giving up 1 first, a second, and a third? Because Kessel WOULD NOT SIGN an offer sheet out of fear of Boston matching it and him being stuck where he didn't want to play!
Kessel wanted out, it's time to stop blaming Chiarelli for "not offering enough" or "choosing other players over Kessel"
Wysh, I'm stunned that you would put yourself in that camp!

Player vs player, I think Kessel is worth more, but if you look at the B's needs, Luch fit much better. Still definitely an overpayment and there's nooooo way he comes close to the Olympic squad. He's awesome, but that is a STACKED team.

ranndino - I agree that trading Kessel and keeping Lucic doesn't seem a great deal. But the Bruiins SHOULD have skill and speed to burn - Savard, Bergeron, Ryder, Wheeler, Recchi. What they don't have, outside of Lucic, is a talented tough guy. In that case, Looch is more valuable to the Bruins than Kessel. But they should have gotten WAY more for Kessel. The 1st round players this year don't look to be Kessels in the making, but I don't know of next year. Problem is, next years Leafs should be vastly improved over this years, so 1st overall will be totally out of the question.

Happy Black Bruins Friday. This notion that the Bruins signed Lucic over Kessel is preposterous, as the Bruins did not give Lucic a contract extension before Kessel, but only after Kessel was no longer with the team (maybe you guys are thinking about Krejci).
Furthermore, Looch does have a market premium in Boston, as he is an icon. Lucic is a player of the mold of a Terry O'Reilly (Bruins retired #24), that is part of Boston's Big Bad Bruins history (tough guys who can also play). Other Bruins of this mold include coach Don Cherry, Wayne Cashman, Stan Jonathan, Mike Milbury, and Cam Neely (Bruins retired #8). And if the Bruins did not re-sign Looch, there might have been a revolt in Boston, as a lot of Bruins fans like players with some jam to them. Thus GM PC had to sign Looch.
And Looch does seem like he can be a 40+ point guy, while installing fear into the opposition. Thus having Looch around, is $4M a year money well spent.

Lucic is a great player and an important part of Boston's future. However he's more Alex Burrows than Sidney Crosby, and got arguably $1-$2 million per season too much, especially on his first RFA contract.
As for the Kessel comment, he's in his 4th yr and projects to be a 70pt or better top tier scorer. The Bruins would have been much better served to remove Ryder/Sturm/Kobasew and invest in Lucic/Kessel/Wheeler long term.

@ Brian C. A lot of people are saying that this next draft could be the deepest talent pool since 2003 (the best draft ever). Taylor Hall is supposed to be a Mark Messier/ Pavel Bure type player. Tyler Seguin is rated by some to be even better than Tayler Hall. Cam Fowler is supposed to be another Rob Blake, and Kirill Kabanov, a Ilya Kovalchuk type player .... many other good players also.

@BrianC: You mean like how he "ran away" from Komisarek. Might want to watch those fights again. Fact is Lucic is a one-man wrecking crew that every team in the league would kill to have. So he got hurt a couple times. Stuff happens.

Lucic, if he comes back healthy, could go pointless the rest of the season and still have a huge impact for Boston. Every opposing player has to think twice before going into the corner or busting up the wall on his wing when he's on the ice. For every hit Lucic lands, there's a half dozen plays opposing players don't make over fear/hesitation of getting steamrolled. Hard to call that overrated.

I can't wait until the Toronto fans get a look at the real Phil Kessel. You know, the guy who makes the same move after coming down the right side and constantly turns over the puck by taking zero percentage shots or just getting muscled off the puck. Oh, and then he lollygags back to the neutral zone and plays as much defense as my dead grandmother.
Lucic's durability isn't in question. He doesn't have back, groin or hamstring problems. The injuries were flukes, and unrelated.
Those who bash Lucic need to watch him play in person and see how he changes the game just by being on the ice.
