The media feeding frenzy that arrived with accusations that Sergei and Andre Kostitsyn were mobbed up made this "Jon and Kate Plus 8" infidelity stuff seem passive by comparison.

It was the tipping point for many Montreal Canadiens fans, who had seen the media amplify stories like Alexei Kovalev's mini-vacation and the Kostitsyns' plight to the point of ferocious scandal ... even when there wasn't any "there" there.

The Kostitsyns and defenseman Roman Hamrlik(notes) had an association with Pasquale Mangiola, who faces drug-trafficking and illegal weapon charges, and it became front page news in the media. Which looks like the height of hyperbole now that police have thoroughly investigated their relationship and determined that the players were involved in no wrongdoing.

From TSN:

A police spokesman told Le Journal de Montreal that 5,000 phone calls made by Pasquale Mangiola were replayed to see if he had any incriminating conversations with the brothers.

According to Le Journal, roughly 2,000 of those calls involved the Kostitsyns, but there was no evidence of criminal activity or sports betting. There was also no evidence of any wrongdoing with Canadiens defenceman Roman Hamrlik, who was also associated with Mangiola.

The lifespan of this story was a fascinating glimpse into how intensely scrutinized the Canadiens are. The night before the news broke, we received no less than a dozen emails about "Habs drug bust scandal tomorrow" or "Huge story is going to drop about the Habs and it's going to be ugly." The next day, it because a salacious guilt by association story. Now, it appears police are saying what we figured would be the most non-toxic result for Montreal: That the Kostitsyn Bros. basically have their own Tony Rezko; having dealt with a nefarious criminal, learned their lessons and severed ties.

Case closed. Back to trying to figure out who will own, coach, lead and tend goal for this franchise, going forward ...

@ Pat, I think by that, they mean there were 2,000 calls where the brothers were either receiving the call or were mentioned at some point. I'm picturing a guy telling everyone he talks to that he's friends with the Kostitsyns.

2,000 calls is a lot of hooker/puck bunny hook ups and VIP setups. No wonder Andre went for a dump this season and Sergi spent some much deserved time back in Hamilton. Maybe come back in September a little more focoused on hockey fellas (same for Carey, Plecks, Higgins and a few others that had bad seasons).

May I just say a few words to these Yuppie come lately Canadiens fans calling me out whenever there's a Habs article..Thank You!! You see, I have been through almost Five Decades with this team. the end of the Selke era, into the Sammy Pollock era, to the present.. The Montreal Canadiens to some were much more than a hockey team back then, they were a Symbol of the rights of a people, and a meeting ground between the two main cultures at that time, Les Canadiens were a uniting force for a City and Province...This past year was our 100th Centennial..And what I saw was a poor reflection and total lack of respect to those that came before, from those that are here now.. These players jumped onto the Bandwagon that others Built..Constant celebrations, Ways of making money on the Name and Fame that those before struggled to attain.. Always remember..."To you from failing hands we throw the torch...Be yours to hold it high".. Merci.

Bob Gainey in 1 year has run the Montreal Canadiens into the ground. Too much talent lost or traded away. He will end up trying to rebuild from scratch......you heard it first here.

If Habs fans vested their season on a 37 year old center whos been on more teams than Gabor sister marriages, than you all deserve what you get...Its official..Mediocrity has a hold on the Montreal Canadiens.

Com'on Gainey isn't Sinden or Al Davis (Com'on you NFL fans know what I'm talking about!)
5 yrs... that's a better deal than the Prime Minister here in Canada. He'll do better I'm sure. And despite no Crosby's or OV's in the drafted talents that Bob has brought... he hasn't been that bad.
