Strange story developing this morning as Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane(notes) and his cousin were arrested in Buffalo after allegedly robbing and assaulting a cab driver over a fare dispute.

Aaron Besecker of the Buffalo News picks up the details:

"Kane, 20, and James M. Kane, 21, were arrested about 5 a.m. on Eastwood Place, according to Buffalo police reports.

The pair allegedly punched the cab driver and grabbed money they had handed him after he told them he didn't have twenty cents in coins to give them their change, the report said.

Their fare was $13.80 and they handed the driver $15, according to a report.

The cab driver told police he was punched in the face and head, grabbed by the throat and had his glasses broken during the incident."

Kane and his cousin have been charged with second-degree robbery, fourth-degree criminal mischief and theft of services.

A native of Buffalo, Kane had just attended a press conference on Thursday with Mayor Byron W. Brown announcing funding for a local ice rink.

WIVB in Buffalo reports that an attorney for the Kanes entered a not guilty plea in City court.

UPDATE: Blackhawks director of media relations Brandon Faber sent along this statement from the team:

"We are aware of the allegations towards Patrick Kane. He is a big part of our organization and a team leader and we stand behind him. As we are still collecting all the facts, it would be premature to comment further at this time."

UPDATE (6:32 p.m.): WVIB TV in Buffalo has released Kane's mugshot:

If the story occurred as reported then Kane is a douchebag, period. This would never happen to Jon Toews, a young man who literally defines the word class. Kane conversely appears to be just the next in a long line of spoiled American athletes with an over the top sense of self-entitlement.

Kane probably thought the cabbie was taking advantage of him .... taking the long route from Point A to Point B, and then giving the usual cabbie story that they have no change. But when are the stories from Hawk-land ever gonna be good.

There was drinking involved according to the Buffalo papers and the cops confiscated the drivers broken glasses as well as finding a torn $5 bill in the pocket of Patricks cousin at the holding cell.

    I smell bull [profane] here.
Drunk or not, no one robs a cab driver over twenty [profane]ing cents, let alone a millionaire hockey player.
This story is either a complete fabrication or there is a whole lot yet to come out
    ------------------------
    I agree. Something smells fishy.

The term "classy guy" and "class act" gets thrown around a lot in hockey...I wish that sentiment was accurate. This summer is proving that there are whack load of spoiled babies with an unearned sense of entitlement. Sure, he was possibly drunk, but you'd think that would make him more generous. Anyway, something tells me he's going to lose more than $15 in endorsements.

I don't believe it. How many midgets live in the city of Chicago? It could have been any one of them, and the cabbie is just trying to get himself some money.
    "What did he look like"
    "He was small. A midget"
"Did you catch what he looked like"
"Yes... *looks up at billboard*... it was him!"
