Months and months of rumors and speculation regarding what New York Islanders general manager Garth Snow was going to do with the No. 1 overall pick ended at approximately 7:17 p.m. EST last night. Even as late as an hour before the draft there were rumors that the Islanders were prepared to take Brampton Battalion center Matt Duchene over John Tavares, the popular pick among fans. Once Snow stepped to the podium at the Bell Centre, the 10,000-plus Islanders fans sitting inside Nassau Coliseum at the team's draft party held their breath simultaneously and were soon rewarded:

As commenter "Costa T" pointed out on Thursday, had the Islanders chosen either Duchene or Victor Hedman, fans at Nassau Coliseum would have burned the barn down and thereby sped up the whole "need for an arena" process that owner Charles Wang is currently fighting for.

After the jump, we revisit a couple of our Islanders roundtable participants to see their reactions after the Tavares pick.

Greg Logan of Newsday believes that Tavares can be the Islanders Sidney Crosby(notes) in terms of generating revenue for a team that's lost plenty of money in the past decade:

In the end, however, the Islanders gave the fans the man they wanted and gave themselves a giant boost at the box office. Having lost close to $300 million since he bought the team nine years ago, owner Charles Wang obviously would like to begin recouping his losses. The Tavares selection also could help his plans for the Lighthouse Project.

Dominik from Lighthouse Hockey believes this is the moment that cements the fact that the Islanders are heading in the right direction.

This is the moment fans have been anticipating -- depending on their perspective and degree of fatalism -- since April's lottery, or December's swoon, or October's Rick DiPietro(notes) injury, or last summer's commitment -- finally -- to the rebuild. This is the moment, everyone outside of Short Island Smurf (Rags) fans could agree, Islanders fans deserve. It's been a while since good news like this -- outside of the lottery itself. Amen.

Chris Botta of Islanders Point Blank, who's been banging the Tavares drum for the longest time, says that while Tavares is a great first move, it's what Snow does from this point on with the roster that's key.

Now on to finding a dozen more players over the next year for the rebuild. The Islanders kept this a secret for a few weeks. For their next trick, they will attempt to assemble a team that can win a playoff round and then reach that consistent contender goal.

With Tavares, they are a lot closer. The celebration in Islanders Country begins.

It didn't take long for the Islanders to begin taking advantage of their marketing opportunities with their new face of the franchise. Fans in attendance at their draft party will be given the opportunity to meet Tavares sometime next week if they purchased a season ticket last night. Also, during the Islanders rookie camp in July, fans can Blackberry message questions and comments to Tavares for one hour.

No word yet on how many "TAVARES" jerseys or season tickets were sold since Garth Snow made the announcement, but you can sure that interest among the Islanders fan base is at a level the franchise has not seen in many, many years.

Maybe I'm just not drinking the Kool-Aid, but I'm not so sure that Tavares is the savior that everyone is making him out to be.
    Alexandre Daigle anybody?

Tavares was an excellent pick, I'm surprised Snow didn't f it up and take Hedman (who will be a bust). However he has completely screwed up the rest of the draft, just wasting picks, taking people way too early. De Haan could have been gotten at 26 possibly 31, he should have taken Ferraro at 31, he gave away our second second, and took two Swedish goalies for no good reason. He could have easily just stood pat and still gotten De Hann at 26, Ferraro or Klinberg at 31, and still gotten Koskinen at 37. I swear snow has no hockey sense at all.

Hedman will be a bust? Doubtful. Tavares may be exactly what the Islanders need to regenerate interest and revenue. But it's unfortunate that a flashy goal-scorer is what is needed to do that, when Hedman or Duchene would have been a better choice from the standpoint of building a team that can win it all. Tavares is no Crosby, and if he doesn't give the flash that is being basically assumed, this pick could completely backfire. I think he'll be effective enough, but I still think its more feasible to build a winning team with Duchene or Hedman.

If you go on shop.nhl and try to customize an Islanders Tavares jersey, they claim that they "deems that at as being inappropriate". What's the deal?

Hedman was the man. Now the Isles will continue to sink into oblivion.
Of course the Isles did fire Bill Torrey and since that time well we know the story...
Isles will end up as the Kansas City Scouts LOL
I loved this team since their creation and now look at it, one stupid move after another.

And that is exactly why, I believe, that Garth Snow didn't reveal who he would pick at number 1. The Islanders need to create any kind of excitement to keep fan interest in the team.

The fact that Tavares' production actually declined over his three years in junior is somewhat disconcerning. However, if last year's World Junior tournament is any indication, they ABSOLUTELY took the right guy. TSN replayed a number of the games recently (Canada v.s. Sweden, USA and Russia) and Tavares was f-ing incredible. Hedman sucked and Duchene wasn't even on the Cdn team (Kane and Ellis were though).
Anyway, that reaction was awesome! Those are great fans and they are definitely ready to support a team (providing their team is successful to a degree). It's a testament to the franchise and fans that they can survive Milbury and still have a fan base like that.

Tavares is a whiner and a crybaby. Bettman is in love with him. He wants the Isles to win the Cup.

Gotta agree with post #6. He's got all the hype that the Sens had for Daigle.
Who can Tavares play alongside? Weight is not the same player he was before joining the Islanders. Park just sucks. Okposo is a bust. Bergenheim is God-aweful...while the other players are a bunch of minor league wannabes. The Islanders' are a minor league-level team playing in the pros.
Look forward to the Devils owning the division this year...again. The Pens?? Bah...they'll get owned this year.

I just hope if I'm an Islanders fan that this isn't just false hope. Tavares is just a piece of the puzzle and time will tell if he's THE piece the Islanders need to become perennial playoff contenders for the Cup. @Siikonen-FIN, I wish I shared your enthusiasm about my Devs. We have more questions than answers at this point. We need a coach, some defensemen, a 2nd line center and some more depth on offense and defense. I'm actually kind of nervous this year - hoping our run of 13 consecutive playoff appearances doesn't disappear in the 2009-2010 season.

pretty quick to judge okposo as a bust, seeing as hes only 21... The devils on the other hand are going into decline I feel. Marty is still awesome but is getting older, you probably wont be able to resign all your UFAs, and your coach abandoned you. Dont get me wrong the islanders will still struggle this year, but having Tavares on the team will generate goals, and take a lot of pressure off of Kyle Okposo. Tavares seems to thrive under pressure a la his performance at the WJC. Can't wait for October.

I thought after Taveras the Isles would have a much better draft then they did.. Moving up that high for that defenseman, and drafting two goalies shocked me..

Some pretty dumb comments here... Okposo is a "bust"? Youre nuts. And ragging on Snow AGAINfor being a goaltender? If only he had the success of Ken Holland when he was in the NHL. Right? Ri- [profane]-diculous. The Isles drafted guys they hope will be good productive players, just like everyone else. Enough with the worthless, baseless smack talk already, jeez.

TMC and Savafan1, good stuff dude. Okposo is arguably the best young forward in the conference. he has an extreme upside which we got a glimpse of last year. Picking the d-man, de haan, is a good pick because his number SKYROCKETED when he was traded to Tavares' Oshawa Generals in the OHL. De haan actually beat out Duchene in the skills competition for best puckhandler. The 2 goalie picks were a needed signal that was finally sent to DiPietro....DP needs to get his act together or he might not see the ice AKA buying out his contract. The other 2 picks were just the "whos" of the late draft....in islander scouts we trust? LOL

Yes Hedman will be a bust with regards to where he was picked, he will be a fine player, but is to soft, no where near as good as being predicted, I bet Cowen (as long as as his knee is fully healed), Kulikov (if he stays in NA) and Ellis will all have better careers.
