Puck Daddy - NHL

As this point, your heart just goes out to Steven Stamkos(notes). The No. 1 overall pick in 2008 for the Tampa Bay Lightning, the kid battled through absurd expectations placed on him through offseason marketing -- and his own struggles -- in a season that saw him earn just three third-place sympathy votes for the Calder.

But he played better as the year wore on, and played very well for Team Canada in the 2009 world championships. Olympic hockey analyst Pierre McGuire thought his international experience might be enough to earn Stamkos a roster spot for Team Canada in the 2010 Winter Games; but then again:

"The age factor may be as it was for Crosby and Phaneuf when they weren't chosen to go to the 2006 Olympics. Age will be part of the equation but not all of it."

Stamkos is 19. Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty(notes) will be 20 when the Team Canada orientation camp opens in August. Doughty, drafted right behind Stamkos, was invited; Stamkos was not.

Some other interesting omissions at the Team Canada 'who will lose to the gold to the Russians?' orientation camp roster was revealed this morning:

Chris Osgood(notes), Detroit Red Wings: A long-shot to make the cut, considering the caliber of the five goalies invited to the camp. But with Steve Yzerman as the executive director, one figured he might have an 'in.' His Canadian Red Wings teammates rallied behind him as a candidate when asked about it during the Stanley Cup finals.

Marc Savard(notes), Boston Bruins: The competition at center is obviously steep, and neither he nor Brad Richards(notes) of the Dallas Stars received an invite. (Yet Andy McDonald(notes) did.) McGuire had him as a bubble player to make the team, so not getting a call for camp is a little surprising.

Jason Spezza(notes), Ottawa Senators: Good lord, how the mighty have fallen. Three world juniors appearances, two world championship appearances and a reserve on the Canadian team in the 2006 Games in Turin. Now, he doesn't even get a skate in the door.

Coming up, the full camp roster. Any other omissions catch your eyes? Brian Campbell(notes)? Ed Jovanovski(notes)? Marty Turco(notes)? Zack "Huggy Bear" Stortini (jokes)?

The skinny, from CTV:

The list of players includes 40 players with senior international experience, either at the Olympics, IIHF World Championship or World Cup of Hockey/Canada Cup, while 36 of the 46 players played for either the National Junior Team or National Men's Under-18 Team.

Players not invited to the orientation camp can still be considered for both the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and 2010 IIHF World Championship. Although the 2002 and 2006 Olympic teams were comprised entirely of players who had been invited to camp.

The roster, from Team Canada, for its orientation camp:

Goalies: Martin Brodeur(notes); New Jersey Devils; Marc-André Fleury, Pittsburgh Penguins; Roberto Luongo(notes); Vancouver Canucks; Steve Mason(notes); Columbus Blue Jackets; Cam Ward(notes); Carolina Hurricanes.

Defense: François Beauchemin, Anaheim Ducks (for now); Jay Bouwmeester(notes), Calgary Flames; Dan Boyle(notes); San Jose Sharks; Brent Burns(notes), Minnesota Wild; Drew Doughty, Los Angeles Kings; Mike Green(notes), Washington Capitals; Dan Hamhuis(notes), Nashville Predators; Duncan Keith(notes), Chicago Blackhawks; Scott Niedermayer(notes); Anaheim Ducks; Dion Phaneuf(notes); Calgary Flames; Chris Pronger(notes); Philadelphia Flyers; Robyn Regehr(notes); Calgary Flames; Stéphane Robidas, Dallas Stars; Brent Seabrook(notes), Chicago Blackhawks; Marc Staal(notes); New York Rangers; Shea Weber(notes); Nashville Predators.

Forwards: Jeff Carter(notes), Philadelphia Flyers; Dan Cleary, Detroit Red Wings; Sidney Crosby(notes) (who?) Pittsburgh Penguins; Shane Doan(notes), Phoenix Coyotes; Simon Gagné; Philadelphia Flyers; Ryan Getzlaf(notes), Anaheim Ducks; Dany Heatley(notes), Ottawa Senators; Jarome Iginla(notes), Calgary Flames; Vincent Lecavalier(notes); Tampa Bay Lightning; Milan Lucic(notes), Boston Bruins; Patrick Marleau(notes); San Jose Sharks; Andy McDonald, St. Louis Blues; Brenden Morrow(notes); Dallas Stars; Rick Nash(notes), Columbus Blue Jackets; Corey Perry(notes), Anaheim Ducks; Mike Richards(notes); Philadelphia Flyers; Derek Roy(notes), Buffalo Sabres; Joe Sakic(notes), Colorado Avalanche; Patrick Sharp(notes), Chicago Blackhawks; Ryan Smyth(notes), Colorado Avalanche; Martin St. Louis(notes); Tampa Bay Lightning; Eric Staal(notes), Carolina Hurricanes; Jordan Staal(notes), Pittsburgh Penguins; Joe Thornton(notes), San Jose Sharks; Jonathan Toews(notes), Chicago Blackhawks.

The camp is scheduled for August 24-27 at the Pengrowth Saddledome in Calgary.

Yeah, good luck convincing Heatley to play in Alberta ...

Good God, I forgot how stacked they were.
Are you going to be posting the rosters at camp for each of the big clubs (Ruskis, Sweeden, etc)?

Are they inviting Sakic as a player or an assistant coach/consultant? I'm not sure how much he's got left.

Gotta say, even as a Penguins fan I'm a little surprised at Jordan Staal... though this IS just camp and not the final olympic roster... I think he deserves it esp. because of his defensive abilities, but he usually plays under the radar...

Not a single Oiler? I don't need Horcoff or Gagner to get an invite, but Sheldon Souray gets passed over for Hamhuis, Robidas, Marc Staal, and Seabrook? Come on, now.

Canada Russia ---- it'll be a good game and a great rivalry though.
I'm sure we'll see all kinds of Russia bias here because:
    a) Wyshynski will do anything possible to sleep with Ovechkin
    and
    b) this is an American blog and we all know TEAM USA has a chip on its shoulder when it comes to being consistently whopped by Team Canada.

Dreger just tweeted "Lucic can't take the smile off his face for making the list of 46". He's a Bruin and I'm a Habs fan, but I'm happy for him. He's a good kid, and a good player. I may not like how he ducked Laraque every time, but he's deserves to be there, and Team Canada always needs the type of sandpaper a guy like him can provide.

Center is really stacked. Is there really anything that Savard can do better then 2 of Crosby, Lecavalier, Thornton, Richards, Getzlaf or Eric Staal? He a good player for sure, but I don't see him being one of the top 6 forwards on that team, and doesn't really bring alot that you want for your checking/enery lines.(Which while inferior players, Jordan Staal and Andy MacDonald do)

Interesting the amount of size they seem to be bringing to the table - Lucic, Morrow, and Perry up front seem to be NHL players, but maybe not prototypical international players. Burns and Regehr also seem a bit of a stretch here, and Proger's game has never translated well to the bigger ice. Joe Sakic is a luxury (Vancouver boy playing in front of home crowd) that they probably can't afford. Ed Jovanovski is, quite simply, mailing it in at this point (guy WANTS to play in Phoenix and he's a hockey player?). When the picks do come, look for the surprises to be towards young defensive players that Canada expects to see in the future (Staals, Mason, Doughty). Canada has hopefully learned that the best team is not always made up of the best players.

Interesting Fleury made the cut but not Ozzie. Especially considering Ozzie outplayed the flower every single game of the playoffs this year...

Anyone that's watched Sakic in the playoffs knows he will compete if he makes the team. Don't let the snowblower incident rule your judgement-- just a little more than a year ago he was scoring game winners in the playoffs. It's long been Sakic's dream to play for Team Canada in the Olympics in his hometown before retiring.
I hope it works out that way for Joe.

I hate seeing Heater make this tryout team and Spezz gets ignored. Sure hes a defensive liability, but on this team, the D can more than make up for it. His hands are second to none.
heater WAS my all time favourite Senator, now my jersey is garbage

    Fleury's Age-24, Osgood's age-36
Neither one has a chance at beating out Luongo or Brodeur for the top 2 spots. Usually go with a younger guy to sit in the press box as the 3rd.

"Sakic is going for his leadership ... and to teach the new first-time home-owners the hazards of not having an illegal immigrant cut your grass, trim your hedge or blow your snow."
I'm waiting to see how Sakic freakishly injures himself before the Olympics. My money is on something involving a bobsled track.

Lindy Ruff must've put in a good word for Derek Roy. Even if he and Stamkos lit up the Worlds.
