After seeing their trade for Dany Heatley(notes) spiral down the toilet on Tuesday night, the Edmonton Oilers played the waiting game throughout Wednesday to see if he would waive his no-trade clause. The clock struck midnight on the East Coast -- no deal for the Ottawa Senators and the Oilers.

As ESPN's Pierre LeBrun writes, the Senators are now forced to pay Heatley the $4 million bonus he's due next season; and that might change the dynamics of Heatley's trade demand:

"No decision tonight," a source in Heatley's camp told ESPN.com at 12:06 a.m. ET.

So what now? Senators GM Bryan Murray had said all along he wasn't interested in moving Heatley after having paid him the $4-million bonus that kicked in at midnight ET Wednesday night. Heatley met with Edmonton Oilers president Kevin Lowe and GM Steve Tambellini in his off-season home of Kelowna, B.C., earlier Wednesday night but the sales pitch didn't produce the immediate result.

TSN's Bob McKenzie has a terrific column on the Heatley situation this morning, including this prognostication:

Sources close to the Senators say the decision on how to proceed now will ultimately fall to team owner Eugene Melnyk, who won't be happy having had to invest $4 million in a player who doesn't want to play on his team. Or that Heatley demanded a trade and then when he was offered one, he turned it down.

There are some practical ways to offset the $4 million. For example, if the Oilers were inclined to do it, the Senators could send additional players to Edmonton whose salaries come close to equaling $4 million. Jason Smith and Christoph Schubert(notes), for example, are scheduled to make almost $3.5 million between them this season. If the Senators were inclined to include them and the Oilers were amenable to taking them, there are ways around the thorny financial issue.

If the Oilers are amenable, of course. The question's been asked all night, so might as well ask it again: Why would Edmonton care to force the issue for a player kicking and screaming about wanting to play somewhere else? Yet clearly they're still interested.

Darren Dreger of TSN reported that Heatley thought the New York Rangers and San Jose Sharks were vying for him before the Senators selected the Oilers. Was Heatley delusional, or was there actual interest from the Sharks? We think Heatley, the Senators and the Sharks are a rather perfect fit. Can it happen? Or is it between Edmonton or a very awkward future in Ottawa?

With Nabby in net? HAHAAHAHA! Right. And while Jumbo might be there - I doubt we'd see Danny on a line with him AND Patty. Patty would be skating back east, is my guess.

im hoping the sharks make a move, maybe not this one but a move to change what hasnt been working for a few years now. Heatley for marleau and a prospect and/or a pick or heatley for michalek, ehrhoff and a pick or prospect are the packages i think would be most likely. as a sharks fan i would want to keep marleau if possible but if marleau is wrongly blamed and sent packing then so be it the sharks have to do something

Heatley is a left wing...you know, the position that Marleau plays on the top line. If they did acquire Heatley, and I'm not sure I want them to after seeing this display of immaturity, then they should rotate Marleau down to the second lineand he can play left wing for Paveski with Cheechoo at right wing. The top line could be Heatley, Thornton, Setoguchi. To be honest, Cheechoo is the one to go, he's been near worthless since the season after he won the Richard.

I think the picture of what Ottawa is not getting (above) is the problem (though as a Sharks fan, I don't see that as a problem at all).

    This is to Adrian P:
If the Sharks are able to pull the trigger on a trade for Heatly then Marleau would probably pass him on a plane in route to Ottawa(But a line like that would be sick).

Please Murray send him to the Sharks . They were too good lastyear and need a troubled player to distract them midseason thur the playoffs . Not that they are that good in the playoffs but lastyear they took the #1 seed in the west and let's not let that happen again .

How is it that he asks to be traded, then turns down the deal. These guys are spoiled babies!!! I get it that they negotiate a no trade clause, for security. However if they are demanding to be traded, that portion of the contract should be voided!! You can't have it both ways. I hope he never wins the Cup...his name would dishonour it.

Greedy and arogant Heatly...lets book him around the world trip on Air France...have him insured to the max....so p_ssed at babies paid millions to play game and he wants to take the puck and go home....sounds like another Yashin...well Danny deadbeat,,,you have a contract....play in Ottawa or become a practice roster player that they can take runs at in practice....make him stay in Ottawa...period....anyone else in the real world would be sued for breach of contract....

Pretty sure after all the dust has settled from yesterday either San Jose or LA are the only two that could still be in the running for Heatley. Just imagine all of the hoopla next season when Chicago has to give up Kane or Toews because of Hossa's new salary.

I like the idea floated by the talking heads on Sportsnet this morning. The Senators and Oilers had a deal done, the players on the Oilers were told they were going East.Heatley then says no? Refuse to pay ouy the bonus. The Senators have a legit case for a grievance. If they are still forced to pay the 4 million, and Heatley refuses to report,as has been suggested....suspend him, without pay.I can just imagine the recetion this baby will get, everywhere, not just Ottawa.

Then trade him back to Atlanta ... or play him in the minors for full salary until he becomes amenable to a deal. [One wonders how the "no-trade" affects his eligibility to be claimed off the waiver wire???] Riding a bus might make him think. And since Ottawa isn't making the playoffs anyway ...
[Another noggin-scratcher amongst us Canuckleheads: Why anyone who plays in the backwater that Ottawa is ("The Town That Never Wakes") with it's arena out in a farmer's field (it is true one has to drive past grazing cattle to get to the arena) would turn down a trip to the relatively cosmopolitan and hip city of Edmonton is beyond me. It is true many of the distaff denizens of Edmonton are farm-raised and grain-fed, but man can they kick up the dust with their dung-buster boots at the Ukrainian Heritage Festival.]

Ottawa effed up, plain and simple. If they truly wanted to move him before that deadline, they could have made a deal with the Rangers (before they got Gaborik). As a Ranger fan, however, I'm glad...because there's no way we should give up Dubie.
