Puck Daddy - NHL

Last week, we reported on a curious rumor making the rounds: That Wayne Gretzky was going to become team president of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and his former agent/general manager in Phoenix, Mike Barnett, would be the next Leafs GM. The whispers grew so intense that Gretz addressed them today with TSN's Darren "Panger" Pang: "I have always been a big fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and wish them luck in the future. Right now my focus is on the Phoenix Coyotes and developing our young talent." Wow, quite the emphatic "not right now, but please keep my résumé on file," huh? Gretzky does have a few good reasons to reject the Leafs right now, and their names are Peter Mueller, Martin Hanzal, Kyle Turris, maybe Blake Wheeler and definitely Janet Gretzky. Plus, the other ProStars really prefer Phoenix as the site of their Justice League; great golf for MJ, lots of minor league baseball for Bo.

Gretzky would be smart to avoid the Leafs. It used to be one of the best teams, but it is sad to see what it has become. They have a few good players, but the management is horrible and they can't seem to get any good free agents too come to Toronto to play. It is going to take too long to rebuild due to the run down condition of the team.

Gretzky should go to the kings and coach, nothing like trying to win them a cup as a coach, he got so close as a player, kings have got the young talent.

Susheel! Quebec Nordeques have more prolific hockey highlites than the leafs. hehah not really but you have to remember this, People remember winners, people talk about championships. The leafs don't have that. They have had some of the best players in history, BUT (a big BUT) Edmonton has had big names( gretzky, messier for starters) Calgary has had some (fleury) etc. Montreal has more championships than any sport in north america next to New York Yankees. And the best teams in any sport throughout history, when discussed the Leafs generally come up down the list rarely if ever brought up. Montreal has how many players in the hall of fame. How many annual awards/trophies go out to players/coaches/teams that are named for players from the "CanadiEns" ....Vizena trophy the Maurice Richard award the Frank Selke etc etc. do you want me to go on. cause I will. No to mention all the times they have won those trophies and awards. Montreal is the face of hockey Sushee blah blah. I heard the Marleys are pretty good. (The AHL affiliate) tell me what their record is against the Hamilton Bulldogs (Mon. AHL team)? hmm hmm since The bulldogs won the cup last year I bet the Marleys didn't get that far.
I am done becuase I will just keep going on and on and on.

On the same day April 9th 2001that Saku Koivu made his return from battling Cancer with a 7-minute standing Ovation at the Molson Center the Canadiens beat the Ottawa Senators in overtime to clinch a playoff berth. 7 minutes to welcome back their captain. 7 MINUTES. If that isn't classy i don't know what is guys.

You know ladies, the best feeling at the moment (since yes-the leafs are hindered by crap management) is knowing that non Toronto fans are so envious because even as bad as Toronto is.......we are still most popular and loved - check merchandising sales.
Oh and post 19 (indian 1) enjoy your brief time as a 'have' province you've been so low for so long we'll let you gloat for a while. Soon the heart of Canada will cause your jealousy to resurface lol . What would hurt Canada more, no Alberta or no Ontario DUH!!!
Toronto fans have cheered for the leafs through the worst of times---I still remember recently enough boo's coming from Hab fans when they didn't make playoffs lol --nice support!!!!!!!!!
Great when times are good but that's it.

Hezron (post 7) are you 10 years old or is an old acrostic poem the best you got ???
At least do yourself some justice here!!!
Also I love Gretz but he's not seasoned enough yet to face the scrutiny of Toronto as a coach. And who the heck would want to coach the kings??? Man clear your head. They were horrible!! They get a great player in this draft year for sure. After another nice draft pick or 2 they will start to get better - 5 years time.
    Bring Quinn back to Toronto

Gretzky was a GREAT player...I tell my 4 y.o. son that he's "The Great One" (and I love sharing current and historical aspects of the game with him...and he REALLY wants to learn it). The Great One, however, isn't so great as a coach, not yet anyway. He's done a modest job with the talent he has, but being in the playoffs and making a run at the Cup is still the litmus for success in the League. I agree that Toronto and Montreal have great history, but the reality is: what have you done for me lately. You guys keep holding on to the past and preaching about the "glory days" (and making excuses), while consistently successful teams (Red Wings) or up-and-coming teams (Penguins) end up hoisting the Cup in a couple weeks.

Toronto has great hockey history, but you have to admit, in the last decade, the Maple Leaf organization has been such the anal sphincter event horizon of the NHL that you can hear the sucking sound from Hamilton...

First off, why on Earth would 99 want to leave the Coyotes, where he is part OWNER, has a lot of good young talent AND expectations are pretty much rock bottom! He'd do this to go head the Leafs organization that has been mismanaged for a long time and has a fan base who expects a lengthy playoff run every season? Not only was Gretz a great HOF player he's also got some common sense! I'd say the better chance to see Gretz return to Canada is if the Coyotes pack their bags and move North. That could happen...

BTW sorry LAFFS but it is pretty bad that your organization hasn't won the Cup since '67 in otherwords since there has been more than SIX TEAMS! Yes the NHL over-expanded but winning a title in a league of six is pretty much like winning a division championship these days, let's not get carried away with our history lessons. That goes for you too Habs! (Let's be honest the "expansion teams" didn't come out right away as any sort of serious competition for a while)
