Down 2-0 to the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Finals, Sergei Gonchar(notes) of the Pittsburgh Penguins still sounded upbeat about his team's chances following their Game 2 loss Sunday night.

The Penguins defenseman, as well as star center Evgeni Malkin(notes) (briefly), spoke with Dmitry Malinovsky of Sovetsky Sport in Detroit about the series. The following is translated from those interviews. First up, Gonchar on trying to beat the Red Wings and Chris Osgood(notes) being "human."

Q. Sergei, can you compare tonight's game with last night's?

GONCHAR: In my opinion we did not play bad. Look at the statistics in the regular season and the playoffs. What other team managed to outshoot the Red Wings in a game? We did it yesterday and today. We constantly created scoring chances. It is a different matter that we did not convert. But this is Detroit. You also need luck in addition to playing well against them.

What in your opinion is the main reason for the loss? Just no luck? Or you couldn't cope with the system Detroit was playing?

Not really, you can play against their system and win. The most important is to finish your chances with goals. It's not enough just to create opportunities. But I will repeat myself, today they had a little bit more luck than us.

Can you comment on Evgeni Malkin's actions at the end of tonight's game?

Zhenya [Malkin] does not like to lose. Probably he was overwhelmed with emotions and let them run free.

You had only 21 hours to recover. Was it enough?

I will tell you honestly, there was no time to think about it. This is the final, emotions are driving you forward. That's why you come out and play like you're on a [cruise control]. And it's not just with us. Our opponent had the same amount of time to recover as well.

Are you surprised that in the last two games there were only five penalties called: Detroit had three and you had two? Officials are just letting you play?

Not really, that's not it. Look at the statistics of this playoff. The Red Wings don't really take penalties. There are in the last place in penalty minutes. I think we're next. When we started this series everyone understood that there wouldn't be a lot of penalties.

Do you think you can win this series?

We have a good chance to do it. If you look at the stats, not a lot of teams managed to outshoot Detroit. We have to keep playing our game and convert on our chances.

Where do you get your optimism? You're down 2-0 in the series against the defending Stanley Cup champion.

You're right, we don't have a 100 percent chance. But still, remember our series against Washington. We came home 2-0 down and still managed to win it.

What is your impression of Osgood?

He is a great goalie. Look at him play! He is a fan favorite. But he is still a human. That's why we have to keep playing our game. He will then start to make mistakes. We have to use them and score.

What about Fleury? Is he upset about the loss?

I wouldn't put the question like this. When called upon he bailed us out when needed, but we didn't do the same for him.

How difficult is it to think beyond the next game?  Detroit has to win two, while you have to win four.

When we started this series no one said it would be easy. Let's live for the next game. We have to win them all. One by one."

How important is it not to give in to emotions?

I don't think it is a threat for us. A lot of us in the team went through the same last year. Of course, we are people and we want everything at once. But at the same time we understand that it doesn't happen this way. We have to work hard and the success will come.

• • •

And now, two quick questions with Malkin.

Q. Before one of the face-offs in the first period we actively exchanged words with Holmstrom. What was that about?  Did you cheer on each other that way?

MALKIN: Not really, it was just a game moment. Everyone does it during the game, and Holmstrom and I are not an exception.

Tell us what happened at the end of the game? Emotions went overboard?

Yes, you're right. I let my emotions run free. We were unable to end our chances with goals while we played a good game. So I just let off some steam like that.

simple fact - in the last two Stanley Cup finals, Sidney Crosby has proved himself to be nothing more than an over-hyped flash in the pan; if he really was an elite player, he'd be playing like it, and not against the Caps, a one man dog and pony show, but against the best of the best, the Wings.

He didn't say it was strictly luck. He said luck was a factor. You seen the two goals in the first game that bounced off of Fleury. Yesterday, Abdelkader's goal had some luck involved too. I'm a Wings fan myself, but Gonchar is right. It does take luck along with hard-work and perserverance.

Gonchar makes a great point reminding us that they were down 2-0 against the Caps going to Pittsburgh and they still found a way to win. Can they take 4 out of 5 from Detroit? I doubt it, but it ain't over til it's over. The first one to four wins gets the Cup.

Please take note everyone in the media..........to be a superstar, with superirior tallent, you must be able to shine and play at a level at or above your peers who are indeed superstars. Malkin and Crosby.....Not able to play with thier peers, so are they really superstars??????
Zetterburg should get the conn smythe just for the fact that he is shutting these clowns down......but Osgood will get it because he alone is the reason they won games 1 and 2, and I am sure he will be the reason we win this cup in 5 games.
    Bye Bye Cindy and Franenstien.

I think the Pens are playing better than last year. So what, it's going to take more than luck for them to turn this around. Maybe if someone takes out Zetterburg (alreay been tried) and Lindstrom they may have better odds of coming back
Me thinks Wings in 5, unless Cindy shows up. Then Wings in 6.
    Good luck.

are there people who just come to this blog to complain about crosby? he is a good player. let it rest.
Luck is a factor in every game in the world. Wings had some bounces go their way but I am sure the Pens will get there lucky bounces too. This is why its the best of 7 to ensure the best team wins.
Even though the ratings suck, these last two games have been great! However, the style of play more mimics pre-lockout days.

if there's one difference in this series its this. the wings are a great team, but they're at their best when playing pre-lockout type hockey. they don't take blatant dirty cheap shots like the flyers, they constantly make subtle hooks and interferences, which the nhl is supposed to have eliminated. the penguins are the opposite, designed from the top down to play post-lockout hockey, where the slight hooks and interferences that teams use to slow them down are actually turned into power plays, and teams like the red wings are forced to simply step up their offense rather than clog and obstruct. this is why fans are so upset with the officiating. the lucky bounces are another thing, undeniably they have gone 100 percent to the wings in the past 2 games. if they get 2 more games of bounces, i guess they lucked their way to a cup, not much anyone can do.

I'm curious why people keep saying Abdelkader's goal was luck? He worked hard for the puck and didn't let up. Gill knocked it off his stick and he went right back for it. He has been taught to put the puck on the net and he did it. Off hand shot or not it had enough juice to go in the goal. That one was NOT luck it was hard work! Everything else we should let go! calls no calls in the playoffs the Red Wings have had some pretty awful calls made against them. Maybe they have had a few get past the ref's this time. So have the penguins. If you listen to NBC it is like the Penguins are the only team out there or it is America's team against some unknown alien team. THEY keep saying it should be this or it should be this or there was a penalty. I watch CBC!! at least they know and are fans of the game of hockey! I love when they say "20.000 fans thought that should have been a penalty-the two who count didn't" Just play freaking hockey already!!! GO RED WINGS!!!

firstmilplease, thats exactly why its so frustrating when they get all the luck. the gameplay is dead even between two ridiculously good hockey teams. the pens have 4 or 5 posts in the series, and the wings have goals off of the boards. thats the difference.

Watching the Red Wings clutch and grab their way to another Stanley Cup is enough to make ME turn off the TV. It's pathetic. It isn't hockey, it isn't exciting. It's like watching someone walk through quicksand. Is that the 95 NJ Devils out there?!

Call it what you want, see any Red Wings shots ringing off posts and dribblers bouncing off Osgood's ass and in? No, and that's called luck. The Wings have shut down the Pens with the same puck control, boring trap, clutching and grabbing, etc. but it's not blatant enough for the refs to call. Is Gonchar wrong about having more shots on Osgood and the Pens play being close to that of Detroit? Maybe if Crosby didn't touch the trophy the luck would be swaying their way with every shot off the post.

"The Champ" wants to talk about luck?? As luck would have it...the pens ONLY goal last night was put in by a Wing!! There is the luck!! They will need a lot more than luck to beat the defending Champion Red Wings from Detroit...they have Talent, Experience, Speed, Desire, and all around hockey knowledge! What has "Sid the Kid" done?....nothing! Detroit doesn't rely on one child to make a team...they have a whole team of men to step in to do the job. One of our guys goes out, or you shut him down and we just go on to the next guy! They just can't stop them all!! Enough said!! RED WINGS RULE!!
