Puck Daddy - NHL

Back in July, Wysh introduced us to the wonder that is "Hockey Scores," Logan Aube's entry into CBC's Anthem Challenge to find a new theme song for "Hockey Night in Canada." It quickly had a cult following with its own Facebook page and Aube's appearance on the CBC News.

The sound of cats screeching, crying babies and, of course, gunshots apparently weren't enough for CBC's panel of judges to put the potential "Hockey Theme" replacement into the contest's top five.

Every night last week, CBC introduced the five finalists and opened voting on Saturday night and closing on Tuesday at 11:59 p.m.  From there, the top two will be announced during CBC's doubleheader of Toronto Maple Leafs/Detroit Red Wings and Calgary Flames/Vancouver Canucks on Thursday night. Voting will last until Friday night and the winner will be revealed during the first game of Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday.

CBC's "Anthem Challenge" page now has all five finalists songs put to the video of "Hockey Night in Canada" to see what the finished product would look like.  Let's take a look at the final five:

1. Ice Warriors

Right away, the song meshes with the video perfectly. This will definitely be the favorite.

2. Sticks to the Ice

This entry was composed by 13-year old Robin Fraser Burke, but doesn't stick to me as a main theme. Maybe Sportsnet needs a new song?

3. Eleventh Hour

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not a fan of all the horns.  If I wanted something horn heavy, I'd go with "Brass Bonanza." Long live the Whale!

4. Let the Game Begin

Solid choice. Definitely has theme material. Jimmy Tanaka, who composed the song, also wrote the Montreal 1976 Olympic theme song.

5. Canadian Gold

As an Irishman, the taste of Celtic flavor with the bagpipes is a nice touch, but I just can't picture "Hockey Night in Canada" with something like the Dropkick Murphy's (as awesome as that might be for many).

So there you have it: One those five finalists will the new "Hockey Night in Canada" theme come Saturday night, and will become the new song synonymous with hockey. (OK, it'll still be quite tough to replace "The Hockey Theme.")

So, for our Canadian readers, which song would you like to hear on a consistent basis every time you turn on CBC for hockey?

ok, so I'm thinking of these with how easily I can see people going "dadadaada" to the theme
number 1: strikes me as too "generic talk show theme" Doesn't really grab me in any way
number 2 :I like it a lot--it has an actual hook unlike the first and third
number 3: still kinda talk show-ish, but I could see it as a theme
    number 4: Solid entry.
number 5:I like it a lot, but I don't think Canadian people will go for it as much. I can hear people now going "why does hockey night in CANADA have stupid bagpipes?"
SO, ranking (best to worst): 4/5 (tie) 2, 3, 1
What drove me nuts was the stupid skipping ad before each one

Since I have no life I watched the one hour special last Saturday on CBC and quite frankly, none were memorabe and all were terribly derivative in tems of the original theme song.
I think CBC should just buy the rights to Tom Connor's The Hockey Song . Oh, and Sudbury Saturday Night.

Canada is a big white snow cover country filled with nice people. I guess thats the 1st 4 sound very safe and vanillia. Now the 5th sounded a BIT better except for bagpipes. Bagpipes really? Was a harp or lute not available. We get it Colin Oberst you're Irish. Why ruin a perfectly mediocore song with the pipes. NESN you should pick this song up.
Maybe the guys from Econoline Crush should have taken a break for being obscure and cranked out a few notes.

take out the bagpipes and five is the best and most contemporary sounding by far. The others are good, but they sound like they'd be more at home in the 80's or 90's than in 2008.

I think #4 is the best out of the five choices. Although the music in the Bell commercial was pretty good too.
I was surprised that the theme music was relatively toned down. I mean, it wasn't very "edgy". Even the classic "Great White North" would have been better. After all, this is a Canadian network. Even with their restrictions on speech, I think they can still say "white" as long as they are talking about snow and not people.
Ok, I vote for "Great White North" as a write-in.

lets see if stompin' tom can help us a little with "the hockey song"
i would like to deliver a roundhouse kick to the dumb*** that made the decision to let our "anthem" go.

@ Hank the Bell bozo is saying Chateauguay. It is a town near Montreal it is on the Chateauguay river. Think Spinal Tap if you watch any of the clips again.

I liked the Celtic one the best, and see absolutely nothing special about either Ice Warriors or Let the Game Begin. Seriously, if they pick Ice Warriors, I'll be very disappointed.

Light a candle, say a prayer or whatever folks, but please get over it. The old anthem is gone (yes, sadly). Try and move on with your lives. The best anthem is clearly #5 and the Pipes add a classy and charming touch. Remember that the Pipes and Drums open ever Leaf game home opener (as well they should), so there is tradition there as well, whether you're a Leaf fan or not.

The CBC should just use the Monday Night Football theme.
