No. 1 star: Jamie Langenbrunner, New Jersey Devils
Backhand, one-timer, good night, thanks for coming. New Jersey's seven-game win streak was on life support late Friday night. Pittsburgh led 3-2 with less than a minute remaining in regulation and for a while it appeared the Devils might not even get goalie Scott Clemmensen off the ice for the extra attacker. They did get that 6-on-5 advantage and after retaining possession despite an offensive-zone faceoff loss, Langenbrunner emerged with the puck from behind the net and beat Marc-Andre Fleury with a backhander (assist, Ryan Whitney's skate) to tie the game with 31 seconds remaining. Four minutes into overtime Langenbrunner zipped a one-timer past Fleury for the game-winner and the winger's third straight two-goal game. Easily the game of the night.
No. 2 star: Evgeni Malkin, Pittsburgh Penguins
Malkin darn near turned Langenbrunner's tying goal into a footnote when he led a late rush and fed the puck to Pascal Dupuis for a slapper that forced Clemmensen to make a game-saving stop. Had Dupuis found the back of the net, Malkin could have celebrated career goal No. 100 after a heart-stopping win. As it turned out,the milestone goal landed in the loss column. Malkin set up Pittsburgh's second goal with a nice feed to Sidney Crosby, then took the puck off Crosby's stick to hit the century mark on the tally that put the Pens up 3-1.
No. 3 star: Mike Richards, Philadelphia Flyers
This one eventually got out of hand, but Richards scored two when it still mattered, putting Philadelphia on the board seven minutes in and providing a cushion late in the second period of what turned into a 6-1 Flyers win over Tampa Bay. Sandwiched between the goals was the primary assist on the Randy Jones goal that stood as the winner. Philadelphia's captain had just one goal in 12 games before Friday's outburst.
Honorable mention: Travis Zajac assisted on both the tying and winning goals for New Jersey. … Steve Mason had his league-leading seventh shutout in the Jackets' 1-0 win over Ottawa. The rookie made 18 saves. … Jeff Carter scored his 31st and 32nd goals in Philly's 6-1 rout of the Lightning. … Antero Niittymaki was outstanding for the Flyers (41 saves, including a penalty shot and several breakaways). A highlight-reel paddle save was Miikka Kiprusoff's best in a 28-save effort. He earned his league-leading 30th win in a 3-1 victory over the Preds. … Dwayne Roloson helped Edmonton put that 10-2 loss in the rear-view mirror with 29 saves in a 3-1 victory over Minnesota.
Dishonorable mention: The Sens fired blanks all night and managed only two shots in the second period (18 total). … Pittsburgh's Petr Sykora picked up two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct for protesting a third-period hooking call. The Devils only converted one of the power plays, but the Pens didn't need that extra two minutes of penalty kill time. … Vincent Lecavalier, Martin St. Louis and Vaclav Prospal were a combined minus-10 for Tampa Bay.

Seriously though. I didn't expect Shanahan to have this much of an impact already. He really does take a lot of bad penalties, but the guy's shot and stick handling are still top notch. I can't beleive that the rangers couldn't find room for an 800,000 dollar contract. That is chump change by today's standards.

Go Bruins!

Under your dishonarable mention you state the senators managed only 18 shots, well, I would like to think that the reason they managed so few shots was the excellant defense the Jackets played. Even more so the stud goaltending from Mason. He made some sweet saves in the third period at point blank range. I hope everyone keeps thinking so little of the Jackets as they inch their way into a 4 or 5 seed.
Go Jackets!!!

You may be right about the Jackets' defence being responsable for the quantity and quality of shots that the Sens took or you may be wrong. Who knows? The point is, I find your analysis to be unreliable when you credit the low number of shots to "even more so the stud goaltending from Mason."
Perhaps it is due to the fact that in a 16-team playoff format and your BJs having never once qualified, that your inexperienced analysis lacks credibilty. Certainly that would have a lot to with knowledgeable people who keep "thinking so little of the Jackets." More likely, however, is that these same knowledgeable people recognize that before last night's game, Columbus was 10th in the West, behind such powerhouses as the Oilers.
Your claim that they are inching "their way into a 4 or 5 seed" is almost as ludicrous and pointless as your attribution for the low shot output to Mason. Columbus is still behind the Oilers. THE FRIGGIN' OILERS. With a whopping 33 games remaining, you'd be wise to temper your expectations. A loss to Dallas tonight could drop the BJs back into 10th place, then a win next week could propel them back into 6th place. It may as well still be October, as far as making a prediction for the West, based upon where the BJs sit today.
That said, there is simply no way any reasonable person could envision Chicago losing the 4th seed to Columbus, so any scrap of credibilty you thought you had went out the window with that statement. I would wager that I was a huge Steve Mason fan years before you had ever heard his name and I am ecstatic to see him succeed so quickly, but keep three things in mind. First, that Leclaire led the league in shutouts last year, yet Columbus failed to make the playoffs. Second, that Rick Nash continues his years-long streak of being streaky and could currently be on the cusp of yet another long scoreless drought. Third, that Columbus has even less of a secondary scoring threat than they had last year with Zherdev - Huselius might just be the WORST number two scoring threat on any team in the league.
It's great that you support your team and all, but before you start planning your playoff party, remember that no team in the West can lay claim to being the 5th best. And before you go implying that Romig or others have an agenda or bias against your team, remember that, with 41% of the season still to play, they are only four games ahead of 14th place Nashville, who have a game in hand. You may as well be pointing to the fact that the Reds are curently tied for lead in the NL Central.
Take away Nash and Mason and I defy anyone to point to a team with less depth. Count on finishing behind Anaheim and Dallas, if not also Edmonton, Phoenix, Minnesota, Vancouver. Hell, St. Louis' chances of making the playoffs are only slightly worse than the BJs.
As for the "everyone keeps thinking so little of the Jackets" angle, one would assume that Ohio was located somewhere near Detroit, given that level of self-pitying paranoia. We are all aware of your recent success, so please don't adopt your neighbors' lame defence of "you're just jealous 'cause you wish your team was as good as ours". It's unseemly enough on those whiners; it just looks way lame on you people.

lol red wings - There's something in the air in Camden that's getting the girls pregnant. Their legs!
Huetn't taking it easy this weekend! However, in your evaluation of the BJs, you forgot to mention the legendary Mike Commodore! So they have three decent players, non? ou Huet?

I realize that Columbus hasn't been around that long, and I am probably not as knowledgeable about the intracacies of Hockey like someone as smart as you but I have been a fan of hockey for over 40 years. So I am not a total ingrate. I'm sorry if you take offense to someone being a fan and rooting for their team. As for the coments about me believing there is some type of conspiracy like the Detroit lunatics, you are mistaken. Also, when I wrote of the limited shots and Mason's defense, I was just praising their play. When I wrote of the people taking the Jackets lightly, again I was allowing myself to hope for easier games against tougher opponents. As for the Cincinnati Reds comment, I wouldn't be caught dead rooting for them or any other baseball team for that matter. I am a loyal fan that roots for the Jackets and the Browns. Now for the fact that you had heard of Steve Mason before I did, ok, what do you want a HOBBY BADGE ? Get real, do you think I care if you knew about him before I did? You are probably right about the Blackhawks, but don't count the Jackets out of the rest. Especially if you utilize your games in hand theories, as the Jackets have games in hand on both Anaheim and Phoenix.
As for you Luke, I doubt you would have written more, because I doubt you could count that many words.
