Forsberg to practice with Avs, test health for possible comeback

Peter Forsberg hasn't played an NHL game since a second-round meeting between the Colorado Avalanche and Detroit Red Wings during the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Foppa played one game in the series and has spent the last two years continuing to battle nagging foot injuries with Modo of the Elitserien in Sweden.

Since then, rumors have continually popped up about Forsberg either attemping to make one last comeback in hockey or downplaying any return and hinting at retirement.

In what appears to be Forsberg trying one final time to make a comeback, the Avalanche announced Friday that the 37-year-old will begin practicing with the team starting Saturday morning. There is no signed contract or deal in place. Forsberg is only practicing with the team, for now. (Deal or no deal, Matt Duchene is excited.)

A statement released by Colorado quoted Forsberg saying that he wants to see where he's at physically in order to make what could very well be a final decision on his career.

According to the Denver Post, Forsberg's agent, Don Baizley, called Avs GM Greg Sherman earlier this week to ask if his client could skate with the team. As Darren Dreger pointed out, if Forsberg eventually signs with the Avs or another NHL team, he won't be subjected to waivers because he has not played in Europe this season.

We'd love to see a healthy Foppa end his legendary career on his own terms, but considering the struggles he's had deal with his foot injuries, it's a longshot to think that he'll find his way back to the NHL for one last shot.
