Puck Daddy - NHL

Steve Ludzik of The Score in Canada is putting it on the line this afternoon by reporting that "the Anaheim Ducks have traded defenseman Chris Pronger(notes) to the Los Angeles Kings for D Jack Johnson(notes) and the 5th overall pick in the upcoming draft."

Chasing the story, Rich Hammond of Inside The Kings has received a text message from Kings GM Dean Lombardi that simply said, "Rumors not true." Eric Duhatschek of the Globe & Mail also received a hearty "NO" (yes, all caps) from Ducks GM Bob Murray. As Duhatschek explains:

Certainly, there can be no official deal anyway between teams until the Stanley Cup is won tonight. The roster freeze that goes into effect at the NHL trade deadline remains in place until the season is over - for purposes of fairness, more than anything else.

So that's where this stands for now. As Ludzik and Duhatschek both explain, this deal would make perfect sense for both teams; and for Pronger, from the obvious geographically obsessed spouse perspective. Johnson's an RFA due for a raise; Pronger will be a UFA after next season and is due $6.25 million in 2009-10. The Ducks get younger and cheaper; the Kings get an anchor for an already talented blue line and juice a middle-of-the-pack power play.

If the report by The Score is accurate, then Lombardi is aggressively shifting his philosophy from the steady, fiscally conservative build to the acquisition of high-price talent for a playoff push. That could be a harbinger for other moves, with Dany Heatley(notes) and Vincent Lecavalier(notes) in play.

I'm on the road to Jersey right now, so check out the Y! Sports Ducks newsfeed and Hammond's blog for updates on the Pronger front.

If something should break on the Phoenix Coyotes front, check out the Y! Sports Coyotes news feed, the SB Nation blog Five for Howling and Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star's Twitter feed. See you at the live blog this evening.

Seems awfully steep for one year of Pronger; that pick is about 20 spots too high even assuming Johnson will be overpaid for the next few years.

Why would Jack Johnson want out of LA? That's where all the record producers are right? I love that song "Flake". Who knew he could play some hockey too?

It doesn't matter where Pronger goes, as long as he continues to be a thorn in the Sharks side I'll be happy.

It makes perfect sense for both parties..Anaheim, this past year, picked up Whitney from The Pens..so adding a young Johnson makes it easier for the cap, and this will allow them to sign Scott Niedermayer for the remainder of his career. For Pronger, it gives him an opportunity to showcase his all-star skills once again for a new team, and with the likes of Brown, Kopitar, and Frolov to seek with break out passes. he'll have significant fantasy value. I would still love to see Pronger end up in a Red Wings sweater in 2010-11.

Question is...can kings resign pronger after the season's over? He's butt-buddies with sean o' donnell too. If Kane comes in the Ducks' direction I'd be extremely happy.

So...if this is true, does that mean Lauren Pronger wanted to be closer to all of her favorite places? Was Orange County just not doing it for her? After all, doesn't she make the decisions on where Chris plays?

Correct me if I'm wrong but..1-Since the Kings have the Fifth overall pick, that means they were the Fifth worse team in hockey..Correct..2-Chris Pronger is old, and would be best on a Contending team, correct...3-Why give up a chance at Evander Kane, who is either a first or second line center and Jack Johnson, who, if healthy is a top three defenseman..LA needs to finally stop making bone headed moves, and look at how the patience of a team like the Black Hawks paid off..The only team benefitting with that trade is Anaheim!!

pronger should end his career by tagging along with the Blues and finishing what he came close to 8 years ago and get his name on the Blues' first Stanley Cup; PENGUINS ARE GONNA DESTROY THE SUCK WINGS IN ONLY A FEW HOURS

    @habs1rule
I totally agree. This trade makes no sense for the Kings. Best case scenario they resign him after next season, worse case they trade Johnson and that pick for a single season. Even if the Johnson contract were an overpayment you'd still have him and the pick in your lineup in a few years.

I read, I think it was the Daily News, that is it Jack's DAD who wants him out of LA. Not sure how accurate that is, but that is what I read.
I REALLY hope this is BS, I would never be a fan of that dirty @#$#@ player that Pronger is!

How about the Kings finding that puck stopper in the nets they havent had since Rogatiiieeen Vachon..It always begins in the nets, two top centers and a stingy mobile defense..Kings have been doing it wrong like forever, its time to learn by building, add a piece here and there once you are a playoff team. Whats Pronger gonna do for you, Miss the playoffs by just '10" points now..Please!!

This really doesn't make sense. Johnson only had a bad year because he missed half the season, so I would imagine he never quite got "into it" like the rest of the players. And no, KINGS FANS WOULD NOT EMBRACE HIM! He's a friggin d-bag! It would totally go against what Lombardi has been preaching for the past 3 seasons of building from the bottom-up. Trading Johnson for THIS GUY would make LA give him the boot. GO KINGS!!

Duchatsek's wrong. Trades happen during the playoffs, they just require NHL approval, and the league doesn't approve trades that might steal their playoff coverage.

Jack Johnson was highly, highly touted in his draft year (initially the projected 1st overall).
His career is being navigated by his arrogant father.
Johnson has made demands regarding where he goes to play (rejected Carolina, now wants out of LA).

Johnson has been linked to possible jump to KHL and has been mentioned in other instances when it comes to deals out of LA.
This isn't a surprise and may be worth a look. I too believe the deal is heavily benefiting Anaheim.
But we won't know until closer to July 1.
