Puck Daddy - NHL

Yes, we know: The Conn Smythe goes to the end boards at the Joe. Or various limbs on Marc-Andre Fleury(notes).

But the Detroit Red Wings earned their Game 1 victory, 3-1 over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Brad Stuart's(notes) goal was fluky, but the set up was all pressure from the Wings and containment at the blue line. Same thing with the Johan Franzen(notes) game-winner, as Henrik Zetterberg(notes) beats Sidney Crosby(notes) on the face-off -- Sid the Kid was as putrid 5-16 (31 percent) against Hank -- and the Red Wings contain the puck in the zone before Franzen makes an aggressive play off the friendly bounce. Ville Leino(notes) to Justin Abdelkader(notes) was also the epitome of hustle, and a reminder that two players that good are on Detroit's fourth line. Sheesh.

Not a good night for Fleury, whose backside now has as many goals in the last two Stanley Cup finals as Franzen (2). Not a good night for the Penguins' blue line, as Hal Gill(notes) and Rob Scuderi(notes) both finished at a minus-2. And not a good night for Sidney Crosby.

Zetterberg won the Conn Smythe last season because he starred on offense and defense. Tonight, he dominated Crosby in the faceoff circle, kept him away from dangerous spots in the offensive zone and didn't allow him much room to create. Credit also goes to Nicklas Lidstrom(notes), who went from questionable on Friday to 24:07 on the ice on Saturday, to lead all players.

Crosby will likely get a load of "he needs to be better" critiques, but honestly: This is what the Red Wings do to you.

It was a prototypical Red Wings effort. The flow was choppy. The goals were born of fortitude rather than panache. The biggest goal of the game didn't come from Hossa or Zetterberg or Holmstrom; it came from some kid with 10,000 vowels in his name. And Chris Osgood(notes) was, well, Chris Osgood.

Tonight was a case study in the conundrum that is Osgood: Gives up a weak goal to Ruslan Fedotenko(notes) on a rebound shot, stops Malkin on a breakaway. Looks shaky on puck control all night, and yet he ends up with 31 saves and back-bones the team to victory. It's baffling if you're not a Wings fan; if you're a Wings fan, it's Osgood.

A few thoughts:

• Great job by NBC getting the Sidney Crosby vs. Kirk Maltby(notes) incident after the final buzzer, as Sid slashed Maltby in the line of Wings skating over to Osgood. Crosby said after the game that Maltby was doing a ton of yapping during the night: "He felt it was necessary to keep talking after the game, and I thought I'd whack him." Awesome.

• Look, the Penguins struggle in the faceoff circle. But for Detroit to have a 39-16 advantage without Pavel Datsyuk(notes) and Kris Draper(notes) is astounding.

• One of the reasons this game was closer than it might have been: The Red Wings had 20 giveaways to Pittsburgh's 13.

• While some Pittsburgh defenders struggled, some didn't: Kris Letang(notes) had a game-high five blocked shots. Marian Hossa(notes), for the record, had four.

• The biggest issue after Game 1 is, of course, Game 2. Will Lidstrom's ice time affect him on Sunday night? Will Datsyuk and/or Draper return? Will Bylsma tweak the lineup for better matchups on the road? And, perhaps above all else, can Fleury rebound with a confident effort against a team (and an arena) that seems to haunt him?

Finally, the Associated Press is in love with the DJ at the Joe. They're the only ones. Human League? Seriously?

Hossa needed to have a strong night, and he did. Zetterberg was the shut down forward we needed tonight and he flourished in that position. Malkin was completely invisible the rest of the game after he screwed up on the breakaway.Mickey Redman said it best that when Ozzie made that save on him on the breakaway, it was the game changing moment.
I believe Detroit was being outshot big time at one point in the second period, came back because of their professionalism and experience and made it a close match.
If Osgood can gain composure in the next game and control his rebounds, this series will be over sooner rather then later.

Not much complaining about the job done tonight by the ref's is a good thing! There were a couple of calls on both sides that "could" have been called, but no bad calls were made, and neither team seemed to receive any favoritism or benefit of the missed calls over the other. The first period the refs just let the teams play, and it sure did seem to go by quickly too. But for other Wings fans to be saying they kicked the Penguins asses, you might have had a few too many beers. This was a very evenly played game that could have gone either way. Pittsburgh controlled a lot of the second period, but the Wings had thier moments of domination too, especially when they were shorthanded. Overall Osgood had to be the better goalie, and he was. That was the biggest difference in the score of this game. But it was a good game to watch, and I can't wait for tomorrow nights game!
    Go Wings!!!

Well it takes luck, and hard work to win the cup plus having 4 lines that can score help . I hope this turns into a homer series that way we can win the cup at home 5 or 7 games works for me . One thing i hope the Pens don't learn this year is to let things go like the Wings do that way the missed call on Zetterburg will mess with them in game 2 .
Sending out a BIG hug to all of the Pens fans

Nobody rolls four lines like the Wings, and Lidstrom is still the NHls best defenseman -even if they gave his Norris away this year....

Common man, missed call on Zetterburg, missed call on Gill, missed call on Cooke, missed call on Kronwall, it's not worth arguing back and forth over. the game was called pretty evenly, and no "bad" calls were made.

"Osgood was...well Osgood"... uh huh Puck Daddy and that means Good. Very Good. Other than losing that one rebound, he was stellar and is on his way to a Conn Smythe trophy.
Not sure what you meant by that comment Puck Daddy, but maybe youve never played hockey. Its called good goaltending.

Zebras were scaring me at the beginning with a few non-calls, but, the Wings still prevailed. Anti-Wings fans concerned about the "age" of the Detroit team, however, the youth looked strong with Abdelkader and Helm. If the Wings can keep their foot on the gas pedal Sunday night, we'll go to Steeltown up by 2. But for now, one game at a time and it is good to have a 1-0 lead. Also, I am sick and tired of having to hear somebody complain about the empty seats - those are $400-$500 face value and many people can't swing that anymore regardless of what city you live in. If only Crysby could be half the captain that Lidstrom is, maybe they'd have some type of chance - but he's not, so they won't.
    As always - GO WINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but it's a shame that you only back away from a fight when it's NOT an 85 year old woman.
you're a joke, you aren't tough, cool, or funny, and you're a disgrace to wing fans. you give no respect, so you get none in return. go back to banging your frat buddies, they miss your musk.

Glad to see the acknowledgment that even the Wings fourth line rookies are crazy good and can hang with the Pen's second tier players and yes the Joe DJ blows, and blows hard, almost as much as Crosby vs. the Wings.
This whole boards story is lamesauce. Like the boards pin balling the puck around doesn't equally aid/harm both teams.

This is a really solid read"Its what they do to you". Its nice to see the Wings acknowledged for doing what they do best. I love Crosby's Matlby quote too- just makes the buildup to tomorrow even greater. We're fortunate to be seeing some great hockey played by some certain Hall of Famers. I think Ozzie save on Malkin sealed the deal....

"He felt it was necessary to keep talking after the game, and I thought I'd whack him."
Crosby admits in his post-game to two-handing Maltby...maybe he should sit for a while in game 2? Last I knew, "yapping" won't put you in the box, but a two-handed slash certainly will. You're a class act, Cindy.

People write about how the Wings can "roll 4 lines like nobody else." Not entirely true. The shift time for Pittsburgh players in Game 1 was all errily similar. They only had three players over 20 minutes, Gonchar,Crosby and Malkin.
The Wings, on the other hand, have a very skewed shift time distribution. Nick 24 minutes, Abdelkader 6 minutes.
I think Pittsburgh managed their time much better, but they lost the game. :-) We'll see if the Wings big guns can keep their energy up in Game 2.

@ 13 Sure but don't forget the Wings don't fret or let that kind of thing drive them nuts . Kronwall hit did they go nuts and get off their game nope .
When teams try to throw them off their game with hit's and ruff stuff nope . they turn around and skate away then try to make the other team pay with a goal . Crying don't help anybody but a baby wanting more milk so let Sid go crazy i hope he dreams about it allnight long heck for the next 5 games for that matter
