Puck Daddy - NHL

I've spoken to Kimmo Timonen on a few occasions, and he's one of those great postgame ambassadors for a team: Soft-spoken but jovial, filling reporters' notebooks with well-reasoned insight while always keeping the focus on the rest of his teammates. If that's one of the virtues of being a strong leader, then the Philadelphia Flyers have one hell of a strong leader in Timonen.

So while I'm sure Timonen's surprise pregame speech in the Flyers' locker room last night wasn't going to make anyone forget Pacino in "Any Given Sunday" (video), it was likely enough to inspire something Philly hasn't had in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Pittsburgh Penguins: Confidence.

Three goals in the first period, with two on a power play that's sorely missed Timonen. A feisty defensive game that finally managed to yank the welcome mat in front of the Flyers' zone away from the Penguins. Marty Biron suddenly forgetting that as a Flyers goalie deep in the postseason, he's obligated to fall apart at the seams. And perhaps the greatest indication of newfound confidence: It looked like Flyers hockey again last night:

That said, let's all take a deep breath and ask ourselves if the Penguins are allowed a bad game in these playoffs; because they hadn't had one yet before looking as flat as a silver dollar at IHOP last night.

The Pens allowed the Flyers more access to the offensive zone and in front of Marc Andre-Fleury than they had in the previous three games; indeed, as Ed Barkowitz so eloquently put it in the Philadelphia Daily News, the Flyers had previously "seemed to treat the Penguins' crease as if it were being guarded by Martha Stewart watering petunias."

It's impossible, based on one game, to figure out if Coach John Stevens's adventurous new line pairings that placed Mike Richards and Danny Briere on the same shift made such a colossal difference, or if the Penguins just laid an egg. (And if they did, I hope it never hatches, because "Happy Feet" sucked.) Whatever the case, the Flyers have received a stay of execution. "The longer you let them breathe, the worse it gets," Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik said after the game.

Damn right, and watch those orange-and-black lungs fill with air if Timonen and Braydon Coburn make their improbable returns to the lineup for Game 5. For the Flyers, it could turn momentum into a movement; the Lucky 33 campaign is already picking up steam.

But here's the bitter reality for Flyers fans: They're going to have to win at Mellon. And the Penguins haven't lost there in the third round, the second round, the first round, April or March; their last non-overtime loss was on Feb. 13 against Boston, back when Sidney Crosby was in street clothes, ConkBlock was the starting goalie, and Clemens was talking to Congress.

The Flyers have the momentum. Pittsburgh has the 3-1 lead, and a 15-game winning streak at home. Who would you rather be?

No chance? They just won without their best two dmen and now they will get them BOTH back Sunday and that somehow gives them no chance? They have a better chance of winning sunday than they did last night, I think the flyers pull this one out in OT and bring it back to Philly for game 6 where things will get REALLY interesting.

Holy cow, where did those Flyers come from?! I think its all over but the shouting, can the Penguins overcome this? We should have swept, and now we opened the door for them. The Pens were obviously overconfident in the first period and it cost them everything, Its probably going to go 7 games now. I hope we can get our, old Penguins team back before it is too late. There is a reason we threw that game at the end of the regualr season and this is it, oh man we are doomed. Pens in 5

Wait, we can win, I think, well it doesn't matter anyway, whoever wins has to play Detroit, and they are Really Good. It doesn't matter then does it?

Before I get jumped on for saying this - I'm a longtime Pens fan. The Flyers deserved the win last night, almost as much as the Pens deserved the loss. With that said, I'm not seeing a comeback of the year from the black and orange. I fully expect to be watching the Steel City versus the Motor City. Sorry Philly Phans. Maybe next year.

    John M...
I disagree that we deserved the loss. I am not going to take anything away from the Flyers intense play, but I feel it is really difficult mentally, to defeat a team in desparation AND a bias staff of officials. I am not going to whine and blame the poorly called game, like Coach Stevens cries, but come on, that kind of B.S. turns the hockey community sour.

Phillyblows, this is true, but get a grip dude. one game down out of four, I do not think anyone thinks they are going to beat us in 4 straight. And I think its good that they will have all of their players back so when they do lose they have even less to cry about. It will be nice to not talk to these guys, they know they are defeated, they should all vacation here this summer and come out to any one of our fine establishments this summer that will be hosting the cup.

No chance for the Cryers. Plus, Timonen may not be back anyway and he isn't Ray Bourque like the philly fans thing he is. Pens will win on sunday and put this sorry team out of their misery.

#16..."put this sorry team out of their misery."
Your right its pretty miserable going from 30th in the NHL last season to the final 4 and Eastern conference finals this year when nobody thought that they would even make the playoffs. Its so miserable to turn your team around in just 1 year, you Pens fans wouldnt know anything about that would you?

The Cup is the Wings' to lose. That team is scary. Stacked defense, hard working forwards, great passing and puck possession, and a hot goalie. Not to say I don't think the Pens have any chance if they move on, but I think the Cup's staying out west this year.

olivematador, I didn't mean to dis the Pens at all. I just didn't think they played nearly as well as they're capable of. Although you're right in the sense that the Flyers had the edge of a desperation mentality and home ice advantage was used 100% to their advantage. Here's to game 5 and an astounding series against the Redwings.

We'll see. The Flyer's-Pens games have been like this all season. Not only streaky, but momentum seems to snowball very quickly in either direction, depending on who grabs it first.
And props to Greg for getting through an entire blog post without a cheap shot on the Flyers or their fans. If Greg can make that drastic of a change, maybe the Flyers can too! :-D
