We have our fun with Philadelphia Flyers fans and their rather frightening antics. But we never believe even their most heinous acts come from some sort of intrinsic evil -- they're not Raiders fans. They come from a tremendous passion.
Last night, they and their franchise exhibited both passion and compassion as they paid tribute to police officer Stephen Liczbinski, who was killed in the line of duty back on May 3. The Philadelphia Daily News had coverage of their poignant honor before Game 3 between the Flyers and the Pittsburgh Penguins:
As Liczbinski's picture was flashed on the scoreboard and projected on the ice, the Wachovia Center erupted in an ovation that rang into the heavens. It was the perfect salute for Liczbinski, who was a rabid Flyers fan. The cheering lasted a full 20 seconds, and the Flyers and Penguins players joined in by respectfully tapping their sticks on the ice.[...]
Flyers forward Scott Hartnell lives in Old City and feels the Philadelphia vibe daily. He is very well aware how deeply Liczbinski cared about the Flyers. Hartnell was touched to learn that Liczbinski's son, Matt, led a cheer of "Let's Go Flyers" at the services for his fallen father Friday. "When I heard about the people inside and outside the church chanting . . . it was really touching," Hartnell said. "It really brings a tear to your eye."
The chant at the funeral was one of the most genuine moments of puckhead passion we've ever come across; the hearse that drove to the cemetery even had a Flyers sign in the back window. At last night's game, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter donated the city's box at the arena to the officers of the 24th district.
Forget the political aftermath of the killing and the Flyers' Game 3 loss, even if for just a moment, and remember Stephen Liczbinski and those who proudly serve. Philadelphia fans did last night, and it was a tremendous tribute from a group of fanatics we're all too eager to malign.

Or tremendously passionate about being intrinsically evil??

tremendously passionate about being intrinsically evil.
Seriously, how does one become a Flyers fan and a Raiders fan? I thought everyone in Philly had to support the Eagles or they were forced to move to Pittsburgh.

Stick to your usual crappy blogging, Greg. You don't even deserve to get the mud of these people's boots on your tongue.

I'm usually not one to take the bait, but what are you getting at? That I don't deserve to write about a tribute to a dead cop, or that I don't deserve to write about Flyers fans? Seriously, "crappy blogging" and all that aside, I'm not sure what your gripe is.

Philly fans, *regardless* of the perception and the cheap shots taken at them, are not soulless, obnoxious idiots, not all of the time.
There's a time to be passionate about your team, and a time for a sporting even to bring people together.
Big thumbs up Philly, and a big thumbs up to the Wachovia Center and the Philadelphia Flyers for recognizing what is going on in the city around them.

You've been trashing the Flyers and their fans incessantly for weeks. And you can't even make this blog without that introductory sentence that basically says, "Sure the Flyers and their fans are still total a**holes, but here's at least one decent thing they've done".
Show a little class and at least put the petty sniping aside for THIS ONE more serious subject. Just for a second, you can get right back to it afterwards.

I figured posting this story, in light of what we've written and the general opinion of many sports fans towards Philadelphia, would be showing a little class.

Nicely done once again.
Ok, here's my props to Greg for that article:
We all know that for the last several weeks Greg has been acting more like a whiny homer posting trolls in some hockey forum than the blogger he pretends to be, with his incessant complaining and targeting of Flyers fans, but despite his odd obsession with these folks (which most of us guess is probably the result of some embarrassing personal experience that he'd rather not mention) he still did manage to mention one good thing that happened that is related to the Flyers, even though he couldn't help himself from complaining about the Flyers fans in that very same article.

I knew you had it in you.
And please, I'm an equal opportunity offender. If I could find comedy gold in Detroit fans or Dallas fan videos, they'd be on the site in a milisecond. It's just that no one brings it quite like Flyers fans.
... as you'll see in about an hour. Please don't hold it against me. ;)

(And for the record, I'm a Raiders fan. Grow a sense of humor about yourself, Bril.)
