After his "fight" with Brett McLean of the Florida Panthers yesterday, Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby claimed that he and McLean had agreed to drop gloves following the faceoff: "We were talking early in the first period ... I asked him to go, he said 'yes'. Usually yes means yes. I wouldn't have wasted 20 minutes in the box for that ... I guess he didn't take me serious."

McLean admitted that Crosby said "something" prior to the draw, but denied there was any mutual approval for a fight. After the Panthers' 6-5 shootout loss to the Montreal Canadiens today, George Richards of the Miami Herald got some specifics out of McLean regarding the Crosby fight:

Did you discuss fighting him? "We had not, at any point. It was as surprising to me as it was to you guys."

Did you ever see it coming? "No I didn't."

Was Sidney jawing at you earlier in the game? "Before the face-off, like I told you yesterday, he was saying something but I didn't really hear it. I didn't know what he was saying, didn't really pay attention to it."

Did you ever say yes to him as he said? "No, I mean, I don't know where that came from."

McLean probably wouldn't be this chatty if No. 87 in your Penguins program hadn't bloodied him in a fight.

On the other hand, Crosby's comments do deserve a rebuttal.

Crosby came off a tad disingenuous, didn't he: The biggest offensive star in hockey, with one previous NHL fight to his credit, arbitrarily decides to drop the gloves with a random foe? When the media's floating the notion that McLean duped the golden boy into a fight, McLean deserves his say.

In this morning's three stars, Ross McKeon's attempt at rationalizing Crosby's decision was a good one: that the Penguins miss the character guys -- like Gary Roberts and Ryan Malone and Adam Hall and the rest of the Lightning -- who would step up with some physical inspiration last season.

But in a stinker at home against the Florida Panthers, and with his team in a tailspin ... well, it's like David Bowie said to Bret from Flight of the Conchords: Sometimes you just have to do something absolutely outrageous when the time is right.

And on Sunday, Jan. 4, we're not talking about the Penguins' 3-7-0 streak or the fact that they're under .500 at home or their 0-for-24 power play rut --we're comparing Crosby's fighting style to Alex Semin's bongo playing.

Sometimes star players have to be a lightning rod. And if a team needs a kick in the ass, we'll take the captain dropping his gloves out of frustration over a players'-only meeting any day. Let's see how the Penguins respond.

this is twice the kid has lied to the media. he thinks he can get away with anything. someone needs to let him in on the fact that we have video and can just go back and watch everything for ourselves. first lie, it is obvious mclean was not ready for the fight and second lie, with his actions on valabik in atlanta he told the pittsburgh media after the game that he only threw 1 punch and he didn't even land it. umm sidney, how dumb do you think nhl fans are? caught on video is you throwing several punches and landing them all (no matter how weak). what a joke!

Like I've said before...Cindy is a dirty player...he'll take cheap-shots if he knows he can get away with it...and I don't mean "get away with it" with the officials.
I'd love to see Cindy drop the gloves with someone who is expecting it...they'd rip him a new ässhole.

With all the whining Cindy does no wonder no one listens to him. As far as Semin goes, at least he tried to fight like a man which is more that I can say for Crosby.

Well...just wait till Cindy gets his clock cleaned. The guy who does it will get suspended faster than Sean Avery. After what Cindy just did, people should be gunning for him. He wants to talk big and "act" big, he should expect people to be after him now. Ass.

Well...hmmmmmm?? I guess SOMEONE has to do it?? No one else on the Penguins is willing to stand up and fight? Might as well be Crosby? He's the captain and the 'captain' is the team leader isn't he? It goes to show you what happens when you lose as many players as the Pens have over the offseason. They started out great! Then the injuries hit the team and now they are reeling. The chemistry is all screwed up. That power play (is that what they call it?) absolutely SUCKS!!!
They lost too many players during the offseason and now it's showing! Took awhile but it's showing now. Have to reload and get back on track I guess? Not out of it yet but they better get their asses moving FAST!! Too much talent on this team to to fail. Right now it's just a slight bump but we'll see?

Brannigan's law is like Sid's wrath - hard and fast. He doesn't pretend to understand it, he merely enforces it. Given the chance, Sid would defeat the pacifists of the Gandhi Nebula, just as hard and fast as he defeated the Retiree People of the Assisted Living Nebula (aka Florida). Sid will have his revenge and one day single-handedly defeat the defeat the weak and woman-like Squiderians of Octolon 8 (aka Detroit).
You cannot blame Sid for attempting to turn things around. If he hits that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate.
