Five suggestions to improve NHL Network

A godsend occurred almost two years ago to my DirecTV programming lineup. In October of 2007 the NHL Network was added and thus, my life changed forever.

In my pre-NHL Network days, ESPN was the standard default channel where I would find my television hockey "coverage". Since that wonderful day in 2007, NHL Network has been the first channel I flip to when I'm not watching Gordon Ramsay calling some poor chef a "stupid cow" or a classic "Seinfeld" episode, like Kramer pretending to be the Movie Phone guy. Two years later, with NHL Network broadening its horizons and expanding on to more cable systems and its popularity growing among puckheads, there are some changes that can be made to improve the viewing experience.

After the jump, I offer five suggestions to help improve the quality of NHL Network.

More vintage games.

The NHL's video vault is likely vast with plenty of moving pictures featuring the likes of Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull, Maurice Richard, and Milt Schmidt. Fans constantly see these old-school players in interviews and in classic clips, but why not in action? What about the first televised hockey game between the New York Rangers and Montreal Canadiens? Why not "Hockey Night in Canada's" TV debut featuring the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings? How about the 1972 Summit Series with Canada and Russia? There are so many historic and memorable games that many younger hockey fans have never seen outside of clips or still photographs. Let's school these grasshoppers on the greatness of hockey's past.

Extended international/juniors coverage.

Like in international soccer, gaining access to international and juniors games could be a television rights issue, but while the NHL Network has shown AHL and NCAA games as well as the Memorial Cup and specific world junior championship games, it would be great to see the world championships and expanded juniors coverage added. So many fans in the United States don't have the opportunity to get to know any of the draft prospects until it's closer to the end of June. Having the ability to watch CHL games on a regular basis would help educate fans on whom their favorite team might draft. The world championships would be a welcomed dose of additional hockey while the NHL playoffs are in full swing.

Increased original programming.

Shows like "Top 10," "Classic Series," "Day in the Life" and "Voices" are terrific, but with plenty of hours in the day to fill, why not expand? A few weeks back, Scotty Hockey offered his own suggestions and a couple stood out to me as fantastic show ideas. "Home Ice Advantage" would give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at every NHL arena, ranging from the best food options to seats with the best sightlines. My personal favorite, "Puck Stuff" would focus on the collectibles aspect of the game, with different memorabilia showcased each week. Now that plenty of hockey fans have had NHL Network on their cable systems for some time, "Top 10 Power Forwards of the 1992-93 Season" is getting somewhat stale. I also might be able to recite the entire "Voices: Mike Lange" word for word by now. NHL Network added a few new shows last season and I hope it plans on adding even more this coming year.

Update the "NHL on the Fly" set.

View From My Seats feels the same way I do about this topic. The set looks cheap. Flip over to the MLB Network or, heck, even ESPN's "Baseball Tonight." Both of those shows feature expansive sets with their own little fields for the analysts to do demonstrations. Couldn't we get a small sport-court rink for Gary Green to show viewers why certain offensive and defensive systems work or don't work? What about the coach from those great NHL Network commercials? What could he be up to? Maybe he can the run mock rink when Green is off?

"NHL on the Fly" should also be more than just a highlights show with a little bit of talk. Fans want analysis, to see plays being broken down and hear the hot topics of the day discussed. Maybe that's a different type of show altogether, but for the moment, "NHL on the Fly" is the place to be on NHL Network for that type of coverage. Dan Pollard sleeps under that desk anyway, so you know he's always available for coverage should news break at any point in the day.

Improved fantasy hockey show.

One mistake NHL Network made last season when it premiered its "NHL Fantasy Faceoff" show was having hockey personalities as their fantasy analysts. Talking hockey and talking fantasy hockey are two different things. NHL Network needs to get a definitive fantasy hockey personality (or more) on its show. There are plenty of decent fantasy puckheads who know what they're doing and can provide better analysis than "Yeah, Dany Heatley's(notes) gonna score a lot of goals for you." Fantasy fanatics wants to know how many possible starts Tim Thomas(notes) is going to get in the next week and which young players are valuable keepers.

So these are just a few of my thoughts on making the NHL Network better for hockey fans in the future. I'm sure many of you have your own thoughts on the channel and what you would like to see. Please do share with us in the comments.

    They can also make a non pay channel. Here in Greensboro, NC Time Warner has it in their sports tier. That would add $10 a month to a bill that already reads $177 for service a month. Not worth it for me for the 3 games I would watch a year on NHLN.

    Add a Puck Daddy Q. and A. segment to the NHL program so bloggers can finally get answers.
    For example:
    Q. Is it true that Bettman and Crosby shower together after games?
    Q. Do all refs get "kickbacks" for missing calls?
    Q. Why does beer cost more at a Toronto game then in New Jersey?
    Q. Why does Bettman hate Canada?

    Best Suggestion would be to make it part of the basic cable/satellite package. You could have made this a 1 line article Leahy.

    Lots of irrelevence on my part as I have Comcast. Would love to see a station set-up a sports format that was totaly all about Hockey on a 24/7 basis. Unfortunitely once you get below the top 3rd of states in the US, the station would have very little drawing power.

    Get Seth McFarland to do a cartoon where Quagmire is main character and they can call him Wayne Gretzky since they look so much alike. Janet Jones could be Lois, giggity giggity. Adam West could be Buttman.

    Couldn't agree more on all your suggestions but upgrading the "On the Fly" set. has to be top priority. Even my neck gets a kink watching Green, Reid, Murphy, et al going through contortions to make eye contact with the camera.
    Kudos to NHL network in showing all of last season's post season games this summer. I would love to see the programming expanded to include some regular season games from last season as well. This way we get to see more than just last year's playoff contenders.

    Just copy everything the MLB Network does and do not copy anything NBA Network does.

    The biggest peeve I have about the NHL network is how often they replay NHL on the Fly overnight and into the morning. I can't be the only person who stays up late at night and wouldn't mind just leaving the NHL network on while I do other work. I do like on the fly as it is now just showing the highlights. A different show that goes more in depth would be just as great.

    maybe they can follow mlb and have live look ins of goals each night.
    If I remember on the fly started at 930 pm ET when most games in the east are ending.
    4-5 hrs of hockey talk a night would be great.
    Cut a deal like other have said to be part of every basis cable and satelite package. This way you carry your own games and dont have to deal with versus or espn. Make your own market. If you do it right and not only market Crosby and the pens then you can be successful. The advertising from this has the potential to make the nhl more money.
    Get Gary Thorne back doing national telecasts. I feel that he is very fair for all team and makes people excited when watching. Eddie O favors Chi and the pens too much.

    Hire Don Cherry too, but make him wear better clothes. Have more round tables like hockey night in canada. Maybe 4-5 color guys from different games in intermission discussing trades and what not.

    I love the NHL Network, but yes there are some changes that can be made to freshen it up a bit. You can't beat the "on the fly" during the regular season, or the trade deadline coverage.

    Unfortunately Universal Sports/NBC owns the rights to broadcast the IIHF World Championship and the Euro Champions League, so NHL network can't get them.
    I think something they might think about doing is getting the broadcast rights to some of the European domestic leagues like the Elitserien or SM-Liiga.

    American hockey fans should lobby to get ESPN Classic Canada on their dishes, as it basically is classic hockey games (feel free to flip away for the odd vintage CFL or Blue Jays game). I agree 100% that NHL Network is a good start but could be a lot better than it is currently. If they can get wide enough distribution, I think thaty should broadcast a game of the week (featuring good match-ups, but also including teams that aren't the Penguins, Rangers, Flyers or Bruins from time to time). It would be at the same time every week, and would be the only NHL game during that time slot. It might just drum up a bit of interest, even amongst fans who don't necessarily follow one of the two teams in action - think a hockey version of Monday Night Football.

    NHL On The Fly needs to be in HD. Every night I wonder why they can't just use the HD highlights -- they're obviously available for most games! It can't possibly be a broadcast rights issue... or can it?

    I also agree with the suggestions above, especially an update of the On the Fly set. It would also be great to see more original programming. I understand the expense of NHL programming,but maybe they can get a little creative and reach out to some independent content producers to add much need variety to the current line-up. Of course the fact that it is a league run operation, any such additional programming may still leave a void for those of us craving a bit more edge in the mix. That being said, it was also a revelation for this fan and has definitely increased my knowledge and love of the sport.

    I don't know who's responsible for this grotesquery, the NHL Network or whoever prepares the listings for the cable company, but on the digital cable listings for classic NHL games STOP SHOWING THE FINAL SCORE!
    It may come as a shock to whoever prepares the listings, but when I settle down to watch a 1980 Flames-Kings game (even if I saw it the first time around), I probably don't remember the score. I understand saying something about noteworthy games (e.g. the 1981 game when Gretzky scored his 50th goal in the 39th game of the season). Otherwise, what kind of person could possibly think this is anything but a horrible idea? It's worse than if the listings gave away a thriller, "The Sixth Sense: a troubled boy is able to see the deceased. Bruce Willis's character is dead."

    * More vintage games.
    Don't care.
    * Extended International/Juniors coverage.
    That would be awesome.
    * Increased original programming.
    I would agree, except I don't like any of the original shows except On the Fly and you're suggestions sound just as boring. How about shows providing more analysis of games (as suggested in a previous comment), peaks into training camps (sort of like the NFL network, but more holistic), shows that periodically spend a full half hour taking a deep dive into the current state of a given team (players, recent performances, etc).
    * Update the NHL on the Fly set.
    Really don't care.
    * Improved fantasy hockey show.
    That would be a nice addition too.
    They also need to hire some qualified producers. The current original shows are boring and poorly made which makes me think that even if they can come up with good ideas for new shows (so far: fail) they'd do a poor job making them anyway.
