The opening night of the NHL preseason offered some interesting moments. Like Matt Stajan(notes) following his chatter about Toronto with a shoulder injury for the Calgary Flames. Like new St. Louis Blues goalie Jaroslav Halak(notes) getting Shatt on. And like Robin Lehner's shutout of the Toronto Maple Leafs, becoming the next great Ottawa Senators goaltender to squander his promise.
Another first impression in that Leafs game: Former Anaheim Ducks forward Mike Brown(notes), acquired by Brian Burke over the summer for his truculence and putting his pugnacity on display against the much larger Tim Spencer for the Sens.
Wow, is Mike Brown attempting to fill Ian White's(notes) awesome facial hair quota or what? There's already an HF Boards tribute to the 'stache. Nice scrap, making up for the lack of Orr/Carkner action.
Meanwhile, in the Philadelphia Flyers' shootout win over the New Jersey Devils, Jody Shelley(notes) made his Bullies debut in a marathon fight against Pierre-Luc Letourneau Leblond. This was like a sweater-punching exhibition.
Begging off after what amounts to 10 rounds in a hockey fight? Clearly the preseason for enforcers, too. Alas, the fight we really wanted to see doesn't have solid YouTubeage: Paul Bissonnette(notes) of the Phoenix Coyotes taking on Matt Clark of the Anaheim Ducks. (Clark must have insulted the homeless or something.) This first fight might be the scrap in question, and was evidently shot from the surface of Neptune.
