In one second, between 16:12 and 16:13 of the third period, the Philadelphia Flyers and Ottawa Senators amassed a combined 80 penalty minutes. Now that's impressive.
Yes, it was fight night in Philly on Thursday after the Flyers took a 6-2 lead in the third that would eventually be the margin of victory. The second-long penalty fest started with this fight between Nick Foglino and Claude Giroux(notes), the second fight of the Flyers' winger's career:
Clear win for Foglino, but there's no question Giroux wins on hair. From The 700 Level:
Looked kinda like Shaun White swinging there, or Kyle from South Park when he takes off his hat. You never really want to see skill players fighting in games that are out increasingly out of reach, if at all. But with the Senators clawing for the momentum they'd had in the second, every Flyer to a man responded with emotion if not goals or fists.
One second later, it was line brawl time, as Chris Neil(notes) fought Jody Shelley(notes), Jarkko Ruutu(notes) took on Scott Hartnell(notes), and Matt Carkner(notes) battled Sean O'Donnell(notes):
Old Time Hockey indeed. Check out The 700 Level for more on the fights and a bonus scrap between Jeff Carter(notes) (!) and Jesse Winchester(notes).
