Puck Daddy - NHL

The first beautiful thing about this fight is that it takes place at the Nassau Coliseum during a New York Rangers/New York Islanders game, which means the crowd makes it sound like Round 8 of an Oscar de la Hoya/Manny Pacquiao fight. It's bedlam.

The other beautiful thing is that Aaron Voros and Nate Thompson were tossing bombs; even the ones that missed were rather awesome.

To answer your question, this is who the hell Nate Thompson is: A center claimed on waivers by the Islanders earlier this month from the Boston Bruins. He played for Isles Coach Scott Gordon with the Providence Bruins.

But how about Voros, huh? Those were some quality uppercuts he was attempting. Clearly a Mike Tyson's Punch-Out fan: When the fight's getting away from you, hit the start button and try to land that Little Mac uppercut. Although his hit-to-miss ratio makes him more Don Flamenco than Super Macho Man.

So that was fun. Not so much fun: Mark Herrman's Debbie Downer column for Newsday -- which has made busting the collective testicles of the Islanders some kind of new sport this season -- in which he worries that Rangers/Islanders will go the way of Canadiens/Nordiques:

We'd hate to see this rivalry end. Last night was an occasion, even if it was yet another bad night for the Islanders. It was another chance to think what a shame it would be if New York and hockey ever had to really say "Goodbye." That is not imminent, but it's possible. If the Islanders do not a) get a renovated building and b) make themselves relevant on non-Rangers nights, we face the chance that they just will not be here anymore.

To his credit, Islanders owner Charles Wang - called "a saint" last week by commissioner Gary Bettman - has not threatened to sell to someone who will move the team to Kansas City (as the Penguins did in their successful bid to get a new rink) or Las Vegas or Hamilton, Ontario. But he is losing $20 million a year, and the Coliseum does not rock the way it does when the Rangers come to town.

Way to bring the room down, sir. Well, more than Rick DiPietro's injury problems already have.

Don't forget Newsday is now owned by the Dolan family which also owns the Rangers.

Wang should think about luring the Nets back home to Long Island (now that their Brooklyn arena is dead). It could give his Lighthouse project more legitimacy and momentum.

This is a rough time to be an Islanders fan. But your right Greg, everybody loves to kick the Isles while their down. As far as I'm concerned their is no better rivalry in hockey than Isles Rangers. However as an Islanders fan it was pretty tough to watch last night. The Isles gave their all but were completely over matched by a much more talented Rangers team.

First off, the best part of that fight was that although the refs could have easily stopped it from ever happening, they didn't...they moved away and let them duke it out.
Secondly, what fight were you watching? Voros clearly won the brawl. He landed more shots, and some pretty hefty ones at that.

Give it a few more years and they should work themselves out of the bottom dwellar category.

    @ ClayMeow --
I'm watching the same fight you did, and the kid on the Isles won the fight before Voros even landed a punch.

Always nice to see a Seattle Thunderbird (Thompson) doing well in the NHL.

I'm all for fighting in the NHL. But that circumstance was just lame. Both teams were on the ice battling for the puck in the Isle's offensive zone for easily a hard minute. By the time the scrum broke out both teams were exhausted—if Voros and Thompson really wanted to fight, they would have...but the refs just stood there and were like, "C'mon guys, do something." Lame on the ref's part. See how tired they look?

A draw. A lot thrown, few connecting. I'm a Ranger fan and always looked forward to these games but, the past couple of years, the isles are boring. there use to be excitement- guys like blake, peca, cairns, aucoin, etc made it exciting. last year, vasicek, fedotenko, guerin- boring. this year, a lot of injuries but, weight and a lot of farm hands doesn't make it any better. glad to see it's down to 6 games a season.

Voros is very good at starting fights, but not so good at winning them. Watch some of his fights from last year in MN. he was put into the fighting role because Boogaard got hurt last year. I think he is still learning to fight with the big boys, maybe he will start winning a few later this season, but for now you have to assume he lost.

Totally agree with Saro G. If they can get the Nets to move to the coliseum, it would make it worth-while to get the renovation going. Gotta keep this rivalry going.

I think the Newsday article reflected reality. Wang is losing money, everyone acknowledges that. He needs the new arena (and more importantly the surrounding development) to make things financially viable. Unfortunately it's taken so long for the approvals to come through, now the financial markets are in the toilet - I doubt we'll see anything for another few years.
That said, I like watching a game in the coliseum - I was in the third to last row last night and had a great view (better than MSG). Lines for bathroom, concessions, etc sucked however.

LeeLee, do you really want another team that li won't support? That will never work.

That was the closest thing that the Isles came to winning all night long. And at best it still was a draw.
