The beginning of this fight between Garth Murray of the Phoenix Coyotes and Eric Nystrom of the Calgary Flames is one of the most unintentionally hilarious highlights of the season. To those of you who believe staged hockey fights are a joke, here's your punchline:
Daniel Carcillo and Brandon Prust drop their gloves at nearly the same time Murray and Nystrom drop theirs. Carcillo and Prust are slowly skating at each other and the linesman steps in, probably because he thinks there's already a scrum on the other side of the ice. So Murray sees this, actually gives a little shrug and starts dancing with Nystrom -- who gets the proceedings underway with a stiff jab to Murray's mug.
All of this was gloriously awkward, like the hockey fighting equivalent of four girls showing up to a party wearing the same dress.
Luckily, Murray and Nystrom put on a show after that false start; with Murray getting in some solid shots and glancing blows off the helmet, and Nystrom nailing the last punch to send Murray to the ice.
The Calgary Herald reports that Carcillo and Prust talked about having a go on the next shift, but the officials spoiled the party before it happened.
It took an off-night for Miikka Kiprusoff to get it, but a good win for the Coyotes in Calgary last night. Derek Morris and Ed Jovanovski finally hit the score sheet for a team that needs some offense from its blueline. Oh, and for you Calder watchers: Kyle Turris was a healthy scratch last night, but Coach Gretz says not to read anything else into it.
