Puck Daddy - NHL

Frustration, thy name is the Pittsburgh Penguins. Unless you consider a Sidney Crosby fight off the faceoff and his 21 minutes in penalties to be harbingers of sunshine for the Pens in their 6-1 humiliation to the visiting Florida Panthers today:

From the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

The Penguins' frustrations began to mount and culminated with center Max Talbot fighting the Panthers' Gregory Campbell off a faceoff at 16:59 of the second period, followed two seconds later by center and captain Sidney Crosby going after Florida's Brett McLean. It was the second career fight for Crosby, who pinned McLean and got extra penalties for instigating and unsportsmanlike conduct, as well as a 10-minute misconduct penalty.

As you can see, Crosby's fighting style resembles that of a Jerry Springer guest who bum-rushes someone while they're coming on stage.

Although "fighting" is giving this a little too much credit; the last time we saw someone get jumped like this by a Kid, Ralphie's mother dragged him off of the school bully while he was crying. And just like Scut Farkus, all Brett McLean gets are a bloody nose and a very public embarrassment.

Was this leadership from Crosby? Adam Gretz of FanHouse thinks not:

If Crosby wants to be a leader and stick up for his team -- and himself -- there are better ways to do it. Basically mugging the guy across from you and then wildly throwing punches with your visor on is not the way.

Terribly weak on Crosby's part. Is it weaker than the Penguins collective team effort the past month? That's a toss up, my friends.

We at Puck Daddy applaud Crosby's efforts. Finally, he's embracing his natural role as the underhanded, divisive anti-hero of the NHL, rather than its golden boy.

And hey, at least now he seems to know which end is up when taking a cheap shot at an opponent ...

UPDATE 6:40 p.m. EST: Two interesting reactions from after the game. First, Crosby told the media scrum in Pittsburgh that McLean indicated he wanted to fight. Said Crosby (video): "We were talking early in the first period ... I asked him to go, he said 'yes'. Usually yes means yes. I wouldn't have wasted 20 minutes in the box for that ... I guess he didn't take me serious."

Guess Nick Boynton of the Panthers didn't get the memo, as he accused Crosby of jumping McLean and called Crosby's actions "immature and childish" in chatting with George Richards of the Miami Herald after the game.

I was watching that game with disgust as a Pens fan and Sid did what he felt was best though it was really cheap seeing as how he gave no warning what so ever.

that was possibly one of the worse fights i've seen of the 08-09 season. in fact it's not even a legit fight. Crosby is obviously irritated with his team, and today's game did not help that. the Pittsburgh front office really needs to do something to give that team some depth before they spiral out of control and be another stanley cup final loser slump team.

Hear that noise? It's the sound of millions of hockey fans who don't live in Pittsburgh or Halifax ripping the page that contains the word "turtle" out of their dictionaries.

Man o man...................the Pens sure have sunk in to the crap-o-lator. I picked them to just miss the playoffs this year but the might get Therrian fired and a few eye raising trades soon. Shame............I like Therrian the guy seems like a good coach.
I think first thing I would do is yank that A off of Cindy. He aint no leader lookin at this sad troop. Oooooooooof.

Well if you really want to know the truth, It is McClean that is the puss as he asked Sid to go and then he wussed out so that he could draw more penalties! At least the Pens have a Captain that will stand up for his team when the going gets tough. Sid is no pretty boy as that would be someone that plays like Gretzky and dosen't stand up for the team!

If that is an anti-hero audition, he's got a ways to go: you'd never catch Pronger jumping someone that close to his own size.
I think it is a step towards another 100/100 season. With 100 PIMs, it takes a lot of research before a bunch of guys from Philly can say that the guy is a wimp AND gets all the calls, and the vast majority of his detractors are incapable of such complex feats of reading, 'riting & 'rithmatic.

Bettman looked the other way at Sidney's low blow, but seriously needs to take a look at the course of events that has been happening as Crosby's frustrations explode more frequently. Classic example of suspend him for 1 game to get him to cool off before he goes out there and really hurts someone.
I'm glad I didn't cast an AS vote for him.

No blindside by Sid - he asked him if he wanted to go......Then the guy just hung around like a dishrag - He knew what would happen....McLean = great actor I'm a total pens fan, but our team needs to get it together. A couple guys are not going to be able to carry the team, it's going to take all of them to be on the same board

It's total nonsense to say that McLean wanted to go. I've seen McLean go and he's done it the right way, standing up for himself. Sid totally jumped him. Making it even more embarrassing is that he had the visor on against a guy with no visor and he went right away to pull McLean's jersey over his head. Watch the fight and that is the first thing Sid does. Grabs the jersey, pulls it over and then swings away at a guy who can't see a thing, all the while wearing his visor. Can't wait to watch Don Cherry tonight on HNIC and see him rip Sid for being a gutless crybaby.

According to the AP recap, Crosby asked and McLean accepted. McLean, of course, said he didn't hear Crosby ask. He said, he said buncha crap (and no, I'm not gonna refer to Crosby as a girl. For God's sake, think of a better joke, people). Crosby got the instigator and an extra two for unsportsmanlike conduct. You know what? That's fine. That was 17:10 of the second period, making Crosby eligible to return to the ice at 16:10 of the third. MAYBE fine him, but that's enough. And no, I'm not a Penguins fan.
