It was setting up to be a great day for Ottawa Senators defenseman Matt Carkner(notes). His team entered tonight's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on an 11-game winning streak and he was scheduled to be featured on Elliotte Friedman's "Inside Hockey" segment on the Hockey Night in Canada pre-game show.
Besides the game being another edition of the "Battle of Ontario", one small storyline was the recent history between Carkner and Leafs tough guy Colton Orr(notes). The two had squared off twice already this season with the 6'3, 220 lbs. Orr winning by KO in November and then a month later the 6'4, 231 lbs. Carkner returned the favor in their follow up bout.
Fans at Air Canada Centre saw the third installment tonight with Orr landing a heavy a heavy right on Carkner for the victory:
The Ottawa defenseman needed help getting to his feet as he looked a bit woozy and was taken into the Senators locker room to be checked out before returning later to the game.
Toronto blanked the Senators 5-0, ending Ottawa's winning streak and giving newly-acquired Jean-Sebastien Giguere(notes) his second win in as many starts since being dealt to the Leafs last Sunday. The teams meet again on March 6th and March 16th, both in Ottawa.
If Carkner can get revenge on Orr in their next meeting, they might want to settle the series in the final meeting of the season between the Senators and Leafs at center ice at ScotiaBank Place.
